It happened 19 and a half hours later than planned, in front of a smaller-than-expected Caesars Superdome crowd and in an environment that felt neither normal nor abnormal. AdvertisementNotre Dame used a swarming defense and a 54-second scoring burst to top second-seeded Georgia 23-10 in Thursday’s Sugar Bowl, the last quarterfinal of the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. Two men sold white Sugar Bowl shirts on opposite corners of Canal Street, a heavily trafficked thoroughfare teeming with tourists. Late Thursday morning, a pair of Sugar Bowl tickets ($27 apiece) was cheaper than an admission for two at the Audubon Aquarium a mile away. It was the first kickoff return for a touchdown Georgia had allowed since 2018, and it helped turn a 3-3 tie into a 20-3 Irish lead.

Once the device has been sent overseas, the US National Transportation Safety Board will lead the analysis and be joined by South Korean investigators. CNN —The Palestinian Authority has suspended Al Jazeera from broadcasting and operating in the occupied West Bank. This marks the first time the network has faced such restrictions from Palestinian officials, including the Palestinian Authority which governs parts of the occupied West Bank. The fighting between the Palestinian Authority’s security forces and Palestinian militant groups aligned with Hamas – who accuse the authority of selling out to Israel - has been highly controversial. Al Jazeera was also criticized by the Palestinian Authority following the network’s coverage of the killing of Palestinian journalist Shatha Sabbagh, whose family accused Palestinian security forces of shooting her in the head on Saturday during their Jenin operation. Following a further heated exchange with the anchor, Rajab accused Al Jazeera of “inciting and leading sedition” before leaving the interview.

CNN —The offensive juggernaut that is the Detroit Lions kept rolling along with a 40-34 win against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday in a rematch of the 2023 NFC Championship game. The win moves the Lions back to the top of the NFC heap heading into the final week of the regular season, but Monday night’s contest was anything but a walk in the park for Detroit. The Lions may have scored an NFL-best 533 points on the season, but the team’s injury-plagued defense has been exploited in recent weeks. Despite having already won more games in a season than any other Lions team, Detroit still hasn’t clinched their division. Whichever team loses Sunday’s showdown drops to the NFC’s fifth seed and will have to start the playoffs on the road.

Carter and Trump could hardly have been more different and, despite the president-elect’s gracious tribute on Sunday, swapped fierce public criticism. Trump, meanwhile, often mocked Carter on the campaign trail this year – lampooning him as the worst president in history bar one, President Joe Biden. While Carter tried to reintroduce humility to the presidency, Trump sees the office as furnishing almost unchecked power. Carter pledged to never tell a lie, while Trump made a political career by shredding truth. A cargo ship and tugboat sail through the Cocoli Locks at the Panama Canal, in Panama, on August 12, 2024.

CNN —A federal appeals court upheld the jury’s verdict finding Donald Trump sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll and denied his request for a new trial. Trump challenged the $5 million civil verdict alleging the trial judge made numerous errors, including allowing testimony of two other women who claimed Trump sexually assaulted them. The appeals court concluded the trial judge didn’t abuse his discretion in ruling on evidence. A separate jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million after finding Trump defamed her by denying the sexual abuse. Trump denied all wrongdoing.
