A powerful eruption from the sun is expected to supercharge the northern lights on Thursday evening, making colorful sky shows visible potentially as far south as Alabama and Northern California. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center said Thursday that plasma and other materials from the sun reached Earth at 11:17 a.m. If conditions are clear, skywatchers in Canada and many northern U.S. states — including Alaska, Washington state, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin — will likely have the best views of the northern lights. Highly active auroras could also be visible in parts of Northern California, Nevada, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. This week’s solar storm is the most severe since May 10, when the Space Weather Prediction Center observed an even stronger and much rarer solar storm.

One measure on the ballot in New York state this November means two very different things to its supporters and its opponents. Advocates of the measure argue that it is simply a way to codify New Yorkers’ right to reproductive care. CNN —Things got unexpectedly racy onboard a recent Qantas flight when an R-rated film was played on all the aircraft’s screens. In its statement, Qantas said crew initially attempted to fix the screens for customers who did not want to watch the movie. The airline said cabin crew apologized to passengers, “particularly those who had complained about the content” and will follow up with them. “The movie was clearly not suitable to play for the whole flight and we sincerely apologize to customers for this experience,” said a Qantas spokesperson. President Joe Biden's student loan forgiveness program can proceed after a judge Wednesday let a temporary restraining order on the plan expire. He wrote that he would transfer the case to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
