“Joe Biden should be ashamed of himself, if he knows what he’s even doing,” Trump said from the garbage truck. Former President Donald Trump held a press conference from inside a garbage truck at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport on Wednesday. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, attended the Harris rally after stumping on the trail with Baldwin. He sidestepped a question about Biden’s remarks on Tuesday and Trump’s garbage truck gag response, saying he wasn’t focused on the matter. But to Harris supporters, Trump’s outrage over Biden’s comments rang hollow.

WASHINGTON — Speaking to a federal judge in July 2019, a flummoxed career Justice Department lawyer made a statement that summed up former President Donald Trump’s shoot-from-the-hip and often chaotic form of governance. The move put Justice Department lawyers in a quandary, led to the entire legal team’s being replaced and still ended in defeat when, just days later, the administration backed down. And there is little to suggest a second term would be any different. “I tend to think the past is prologue,” said a lawyer who served in a senior position in the Trump administration. “What we are preparing for in the chance of a second Trump administration is that, frankly, the legal maneuvers they would try to do would be better organized,” he said.

But when it comes to technology, one of the most powerful people shaping regulation isn't a candidate at all. Altman, the OpenAI co-founder and CEO, meanwhile, has put on a masterclass in wooing Washington, learning from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and social media's missteps in front of Congress. Lawmakers have now begun embracing AI in a way they never did social media. That new messaging on AI regulation is largely thanks to Altman turning OpenAI into a lobbying powerhouse. Now, he's bringing his playbook to OpenAI, where his message to Washington is that if the U.S. doesn't lead the way in AI, an autocratic nation like China will.

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are shown on screen during a debate watch party at the Cameo Art House Theatre in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Sept. 10, 2024. European politicians and policymakers are busy preparing for more American protectionism regardless of who emerges as the next leader of the White House after elections next week. The presidential race has remained a dead heat going into its final few days, with polling consistently rating the candidates, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, as being tied within key battleground states and across the country. "Whoever wins will be 'America first'," a senior European diplomat, who did not want to be named due to the sensitive nature of the transatlantic relationship, told CNBC last week. The comments come after a warning from German Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who on Friday told CNBC there could be retaliation if the U.S. kicked off a trade war with the European Union.

WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, plans to spend election night at her alma mater, Howard University in Washington, D.C., according to three people familiar with the planning. One source said the campaign is likely to hold its election night event in the Quad, though the exact location on campus could change. NBC News previously reported that Harris’ campaign was eyeing the university, where Harris obtained her bachelor’s degree, as a potential venue for the vice president's election night headquarters. New research published Tuesday in the journal Antiquity reveals sites that in total cover area about one-and-a-half times the size of Washington, D.C. The data, gathered by a research group studying land-use patterns, came to light using modern drone mapping technology known as LiDAR — light detection and ranging equipment. LiDAR maps are used by a wide range of researchers to collect data for archeological and nonarchaeological purposes, but Auld-Thomas took the data and analyzed the maps with methods used by archaeologists.

Much of Trump's closing message is focused on illegal immigration, one of the centerpieces of his campaign. The interview, which was widely hyped by Trump and his supporters, was a snapshot of his, at best, untraditional attempt at a campaign closing message and, at worst, his tendency to step on his own policy pushes. The discipline of the Harris campaign contrasts with that of Trump, whose late-cycle rallies have maintained the sort of rambling, unfocused structure he has long been known for. That dynamic can be seen even in his final speeches as Trump tries to close out his third presidential campaign. “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” Danielle Alvarez, a senior adviser, said in a statement shortly after the joke was made.

Legal experts say an attempt to overturn the 2024 election results would be more difficult than in 2020. And a lost Chopin waltz is discovered after 200 years. Legal experts say those changes would make another attempt to overturn the result of the election much more difficult and unlikely. If Trump attempted to overturn the election result in Congress, he’d be up against the bipartisan Electoral Count Reform Act. This election season, voters said they are disillusioned by both major parties, especially over the handling of the war in Gaza.

But state officials resisted his pressure, judges tossed out his team’s lawsuits, and Pence defied Trump and carried out his constitutional duty to affirm the result of the vote. If Trump sought to challenge the election results, he would have two potential paths to try to overturn the results, and both routes are “long shots,” said Hasen, director of the Safeguarding Democracy Project at UCLA Law School. Given the heightened security risk, some state officials have made plans to scrap public, high-profile ceremonies to certify election results in state capitols. Election officials across the country also have bolstered security at polling places, including expanding police presence and issuing bulletproof vests to election workers. State officials resisted.

(AP) — The federal government is handing out $2.4 billion in railroad grants to help pay for 122 projects nationwide with more than half of the money going to smaller railroads. The grants announced Tuesday by the Federal Railroad Administration will go to projects across 41 states and Washington, D.C. Last year, the administration handed out $1.4 billion in these rail grants. But the majority of the money — nearly $1.3 billion — will go to 81 projects at smaller short line railroads across the country. Chuck Baker, president of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association trade group, said the grants will help those smaller railroads significantly.

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner on Friday warned that if the U.S. kicked off a trade war with the European Union, there could be retaliation. Trade is one of the main pillars of the German economy, suggesting heightened tensions, uncertainty and tariffs would hit the country harder than others. Trade tensions between the U.S. and China, and the EU and China, have been rising throughout the year. Both the U.S. and EU have implemented higher tariffs and on some goods imported from China, citing unfair trade practices. China in turn has also announced higher temporary tariffs on some imports from the EU.
