A 32-year-old man who shot a second man in the head during an altercation on a moving A train Thursday evening appears to have acted in self-defense and will not be criminally charged for now, the Brooklyn district attorney said on Friday. The shooting, which followed a frightening, chaotic confrontation on a crowded subway car during the evening rush, left the second man, 36, in critical but stable condition. The gun he was shot with was one he brought onto the train and brandished during the altercation, the police said. Oren Yaniv, a spokesman for the district attorney, Eric Gonzalez, described the shooting as “shocking and deeply upsetting.”“The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing,” Mr. Yaniv said in a statement, “but, at this stage, evidence of self-defense precludes us from filing any criminal charges against the shooter.”

CNN —Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis can stay on and prosecute the Georgia 2020 election interference racketeering case against former President Donald Trump and 14 of his co-defendants, Judge Scott McAfee ruled Friday, but only if she removes the special prosecutor with whom she engaged in a romantic relationship. CNN has reached out to the district attorney’s office regarding the next steps in the case. Wilis chose to dedicate much of her energy on what she believed was the most important case: prosecuting Trump for his attempts to steal the Georgia election in 2020. But the next 40 non-racketeering charges stemmed from roughly a dozen key incidents after the 2020 election. One of the few treatments the Food and Drug Administration has approved for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis has failed a large clinical trial, and its manufacturer said Friday that it was considering whether to withdraw it from the market. The medication, called Relyvrio, was approved less than two years ago, despite questions about its effectiveness in treating the severe neurological disorder. At the time, the F.D.A.’s reviewers had concluded there was not yet sufficient evidence that the medication could help patients live longer or slow the rate at which they lose functions like muscle control, speaking or breathing without assistance. But the agency decided to greenlight the medication instead of waiting two years for results of a large clinical trial, citing data showing the treatment to be safe and the desperation of patients with a disease that often causes death within two to five years. Now, results of the 48-week trial of 664 patients are in, and they showed that the treatment did not work better than a placebo.

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office on Monday asked a judge to impose a gag order on former President Donald Trump ahead of his upcoming trial on charges of falsifying business records related to a 2016 hush money payment to a porn star. Prosecutors want Trump barred from making public comments about witnesses jurors, trial prosecutors, members of the court staff, and any relatives of lawyers and court staff involved in the case. They also want him barred from directing others to make public statements any prospective juror or jurors in the trial. "And the need for such protection is compelling," Bragg's office said in its request, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court. Trump would be allowed to make public statements about Bragg under the proosed gag order.
