A strike at ports along the US East and Gulf Coasts presents huge challenges for the economy. The strike could lead to billions in daily economic losses and stall imports ranging from mangoes to auto parts. The dockworkers are pushing for higher wages and a ban on automation at the ports. AdvertisementA major strike at US ports started on Tuesday and could snarl everything from holiday shopping to auto production lines. But the strike could halt shipments of those foods, including mangoes, bananas, and other fresh fruit from Central and South America.

Global Entry and NEXUS application prices are going up

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has raised the cost of applying for or renewing its Trusted Traveler Programs – a catchall term that covers Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI – from $100 to $120, as of October 1. The only exception is for minors: those under the age of 18 whose parents are enrolled in Global Entry and other Trusted Traveler Programs will not have to pay a fee. Global Entry launched in 2008. Signing up for Global Entry requires an application process and in-person interview in addition to the nonrefundable application fee. Travelers with Global Entry can use dedicated fast lanes at US airports.

More than 13,000 immigrants convicted of homicide — either in the United States or abroad — are living freely in the U.S., outside of Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention, according to data ICE provided to Congress earlier this week. The 13,099 immigrants convicted of homicide living in the U.S. may have never had contact with ICE, the two law enforcement officials said. The two law enforcement officials said ICE prioritizes migrants who have been convicted of serious crimes, like homicide, for arrest. There are currently more than 7.5 million immigrants on ICE’s “non-detained” docket, meaning they have pending immigration cases but are not currently in detention. Agents explained that locating convicted criminals living at large takes an enormous amount of manpower, from locating them to the arrest.

While states are allowed to clean up their voter registrations ahead of an election, federal law says that must happen more than 90 days before an election. The Justice Department said Friday that the voter roll purge announcement in Alabama took place 84 days before the Nov. 5 election and therefore violated the National Voter Registration Act. Noncitizen identification numbers are assigned to immigrants by U.S. Customs and Immigration Services to track their immigration files, employment eligibility and visa applications, among other things. Permanent residents who then become naturalized citizens will have had a noncitizen identification number at some point. The DOJ lawsuit comes as Alabama kicked off its general election this month, becoming the first state to start sending out mail ballots on Sept. 11.

Membership prices for the expedited security program Global Entry are increasing for the first time ever, from $100 to $120 for both new members and renewals, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. However, the price hike takes effect Oct. 1, so you can still lock in the current price by applying or renewing before then. Keep in mind that you can only renew a year in advance, so if your current membership is valid beyond October 2025, the higher fee will apply. While adults can save by renewing before Oct. 1, it's better to wait if you have kids. From Oct. 1, children under 18 will no longer have to pay the $100 membership fee.

SHENZHEN, China — Chinese vendor Yin Xinwei sometimes makes close to $1,400 a day selling low-priced pill boxes, barbecue spits and other items to U.S. online consumers. Each year hundreds of millions of packages, mostly from Chinese platforms, are sent directly to American consumers eager to take advantage of rock-bottom prices on clothing, electronics and other products. That could mean painful times ahead for the Chinese sellers that supply the platforms — and higher prices for American consumers. Chinese state media has criticized the proposal as protectionist and say it will hurt American consumers. Yin used to sell to Chinese consumers but has given up his domestic business to focus entirely on the overseas market.

The White House wants to close a trade loophole exploited by Chinese discount e-retailers — a move that would have a ripple effect on at least two of our portfolio stocks: Amazon and Meta Platforms. The de minimis exemption has allowed Chinese e-commerce giants, particularly low-cost Temu and Shein, to flourish. Temu has risen in popularity in the U.S. for selling items directly from Chinese merchants at massive discounts. Temu is generally seen as a growing competitor to Amazon since its prices are often lower. Researchers at Aston University in England estimated that between 2021 and 2023, annual UK exports of goods to the EU were 17% lower than they would have been had Brexit never happened. Exports in most sectors have decreased since 2021, according to the report. “The UK-EU trade relationship remains crucial for both parties,” Tuesday’s report said, adding that the relationship “underpins” economic stability and growth. According to the study’s lead author, Professor Jun Du, the post-Brexit trade deal has “introduced substantial barriers” to UK-EU trade. The report is the latest piece of research to highlight the negative effects Brexit has had on the UK economy.
