Costco on Wednesday announced the 1-ounce platinum bars, on sale for $1,089.99 on its website alongside its now-famed gold bars and silver coins. New York CNN —Toilet paper shortages in stores across America are giving folks nightmarish reminders of the pandemic era. But the lack of toilet paper isn’t a direct result of a major port strike Tuesday. Reports of shortages filled social media Tuesday, showing empty shelves where toilet paper and, to a lesser extent, paper towels were supposed to be. The overwhelming majority — more than 90% by some estimates — of US toilet paper consumption comes from domestic factories. Any toilet paper hoarded today will last until the next round of panic buying, even it happens years from now.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday opined on pervasive inflation, saying companies must bring down prices if they want to attract consumers in the current economic landscape. "Companies are so reluctant to take prices down because they don't want to hurt their treasured gross margins," he said. He also attributed some of the issues at Nike to inflation, saying they're "emblematic of how higher prices are changing the face of business." While consumers protest higher prices, Cramer said they — and Wall Street — are responding well to companies that offer bargains or have reduced prices. He added that companies that roll back prices can offset the costs with volume.

London CNN —CVS Health is planning to cut about 2,900 jobs in an effort to slash costs, the US health care company said Tuesday. The layoffs represent less than 1% of CVS Health’s (CVS) workforce. In 2021, CVS Health announced that it would close around 900 stores between 2022 and 2024. US drug store chains are struggling because of falling reimbursement rates for prescription drugs, according to analysts who cover the industry. Dollar General’s growth has also hurt drug store chains in rural areas.

Club holdings Amazon , Costco , Home Depot , and Best Buy have been preparing for the port strike for months — attempting to blunt any fallout it might have on their abilities to get goods from overseas. They added that 60% to 70% of those imports arrive at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports. To put things in perspective, for retail goods, the East Coast ports are less utilized than the West Coast ports, Basham said. Due to its size, however, Best Buy often gets priority from its shippers, which could help secure goods faster than smaller competitors. Port workers are demanding a 61.5% raise and oppose the adoption of automation in new contract negotiations. According to Stifel analyst Bruce Chan, the ramifications of the port strike won't be sizable unless the strike is drawn out for more than two weeks. Robinson Worldwide and Expeditors International of Washington have seen gains of 4% and 5% in the past week, respectively, as investors anticipate increased business due to the port strike. Biggest losersThe biggest losers, so far, appear to be shipping container companies that are directly exposed to the port strike. That means railroads and trucking companies with significant exposure to the east coast could take a hit.
