The surgeon general’s 837-page report on tobacco use found that 37.8% of gay, lesbian and bisexual U.S. adults have tried electronic cigarettes, compared with just 16.5% of their straight counterparts. He said that LGBTQ people use tobacco products at higher rates largely because of “long-standing stigma” within health care settings. Still, 36 million U.S. adults and 760,000 middle and high school students smoke tobacco products, according to the report. The long-standing promise of a ban on menthol cigarettes, which has been years in the making, is unlikely to move forward before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. The FDA announced it would begin the process of banning menthol tobacco cigarettes in 2021. Since then, it has done all it is legally authorized to do to put the finalized rule to ban menthol in motion. But it’s politics, not public health, that is likely to keep menthol cigarettes on the market as Biden’s term ends. California represents the largest share of human bird flu cases in the U.S. so far, with 27 confirmed, not counting the child in Alameda County. Instagram users will soon be able to manually reset the recommendation algorithm that determines what they see in their feeds. “We want to make sure everyone on Instagram — especially teens — has safe, positive, age-appropriate experiences and feels the time they’re spending on Instagram is valuable,” the company said. Bose Corp. will purchase the McIntosh Group, a deal that will give the Massachusetts-based company control of one of the most storied names in high-end audio. McIntosh will continue to manufacture the high-end audio equipment it is known for out of its longtime headquarters in New York, Bose CEO Lila Snyder said. The deal also includes Sonus Faber, a company that makes high-end speakers by hand in Italy. The purchase of the two audio workshops provides Bose access into the high-end luxury audio market, Snyder told CNBC in an interview. McIntosh has been making high-end amplifiers and other audio equipment since 1949, and one of its devices can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

CNN —Brazilian police have arrested five people, including a former adviser to ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, over an alleged plot to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022, authorities said. The coup plot was conceived in late 2022, before Lula took office, according to Federal Police. The alleged plot also involved other military personnel with training in special forces, the Federal Police said. In February of this year, Bolsonaro was placed under investigation over the alleged plot. In October 2022, Lula narrowly beat Bolsonaro in the presidential election.
