Brian Kemp has emerged as Herschel Walker's most powerful surrogate in the Georgia Senate runoff. Kemp, who won reelection as governor, didn't campaign with Walker during the general election race. This normally wouldn't be a notable act in GOP politics, but the Georgia Senate runoff election is not a normal contest. For that reason, Walker has found himself openly embracing Kemp, who came out of the general election as the biggest winner in Georgia politics. On November 7, Kemp flew around Georgia with most of the statewide GOP candidates — including Raffensperger — but Walker wasn't part of the mix.
A former GOP congressman said the American people have "moved on from Trump." Former Rep. Francis Rooney said there are a "number of very conservative Republicans" who remain focused on Trumpism. The comments from former Rep. Francis Rooney of Florida come days after former President Donald Trump launched his 2024 bid for the presidency and received a muted response from the GOP. "The world has moved beyond Trump, but there are a certain number of very conservative Republicans who don't seem to have that figured out yet," Rooney said on "Meet the Press Now" on NBC News on Friday. Rooney, one of the first Republicans to suggest Trump may have committed impeachable offenses in his dealings with Ukraine, announced his retirement in 2019, according to Politico.

Despite Republican hopes for a "red wave" of support in the Nov. 8 elections, they failed to reverse Democrats' razor-thin Senate majority. They appear to be on course to win a narrow House majority, having won 217 of the 218 seats they would need, with 10 still uncalled. U.S. debt limit increase not needed this year -Sen. McConnell

WASHINGTON, Nov 15 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday downplayed the likelihood the chamber will vote by year's end to raise the federal government's statutory limit on borrowing, noting that such legislation is not needed until next year. "I don't think the debt limit issue is until sometime next year," McConnell told reporters when asked whether the Senate could vote on an increase during the chamber's post-election work session that began on Monday and could extend until late December. Treasury Department officials have voiced a desire for Congress to raise the debt limit during this Congress, fearing that it could become more difficult next year if Republicans, as expected, take majority control of the House of Representatives from Democrats. Many conservative Republicans have advocated holding back on a debt limit increase next year until significant domestic spending cuts are enacted by Congress, raising fears of a possible historic default on debt payments by the federal government. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene expressed support for Rep. Kevin McCarthy's bid for House speaker. Greene criticized the possibility of fellow conservative Republicans challenging McCarthy. Cheney, a staunch critic of former President Donald Trump, lost her reelection, but could technically become House speaker if she receives enough votes, though such a move is uncommon. The current opposition to McCarthy could be a sign of more internal division to come under a House Republican majority. Greene, also a member of the House Freedom Caucus, had previously voiced concerns about McCarthy's leadership after House Democrats removed her from her committee assignments last year in light of her past inflammatory statements.
In August, voters in conservative Kansas defeated a ballot measure aimed at eliminating abortion rights from the state's constitution. MICHIGANVoters in the battleground state of Michigan backed a ballot initiative declaring abortion as a right protected by the state's constitution. VERMONTVoters decided to include abortion rights in Vermont's state constitution. As required by state law, the ballot measure had already been approved twice by the Democratic-controlled legislature. Other conservative states have enacted similar legislation in recent years.
As a result, political observers say, public school funding is effectively on the ballot Tuesday. “These groups have been demonizing what is being taught in public schools, and that’s the fastest way to erode faith that public schools work,” Rottinghaus said. (Abbott publicly came out in support of private school vouchers two months after winning the primary with 66.5% of the vote.) Greg Abbott in the GOP primary, campaigned in support of private school vouchers. “I will never support vouchers.”Rep. John Bucy III said he will continue to oppose private school vouchers.
Hawley says GOP leaders should make banning congressional stock trading their top priority. Congressional Democrats have floated various trading bans but haven't found a unifying fix. How about Congress pass an actual stock trading ban?" Fellow stock trading ban advocate Sen. Jeff Merkley announced a few weeks earlier that Senate Democrats were punting their own compromise bundle into the lame-duck session. Hawley's stock trading proposal, which only applies to congressional members and their spouses, currently has no cosponsors and is less comprehensive than many of the languishing Democratic proposals.
Abortion rights protesters demonstrate after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Dobbs v Women's Health Organization abortion case, overturning the landmark Roe v Wade abortion decision in Los Angeles, California, U.S., June 29, 2022. In August, voters in conservative Kansas defeated a ballot measure aimed at eliminating abortion rights from the state's constitution. VERMONTVermont residents also will vote on a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights. Conservative Republicans in the state had sought to allow a 1931 abortion ban to be enforced once Roe v. Wade was overturned. Other conservative states have enacted similar legislation in recent years.
A core part of federal emissions regulations since the early 1970s has been the so-called California Waiver. Nik Wheeler/Corbis/Getty ImagesBut, in 1967, it was Reagan, then the governor of California, who signed off on the creation of the California Air Resources Board. By this time, the groundwork had already been laid for California to set its own rules and that continued with the “California waiver,” a part of federal regulations that made this special exception for California. During his tenure, President Donald Trump asked the courts to do away with the California waiver. President Joseph Biden’s administration dropped that effort and, in March 2022, the California waiver was renewed once more.
