CNN —Biden administration officials, watching the remarkable speed of the Syrian rebel advance, increasingly see the possibility of the regime of Bashar al-Assad falling within days, five US officials told CNN. “Probably by next weekend the Assad regime will have lost any semblance of power,” one said. The Biden administration appeared caught off guard by the speed of the rebel advance launched last week. Regime troops have collapsed and melted away, leaving a fragile shell of an army to defend the president and Damascus. Leading the rebel advance in Syria is a group designated by the US as terrorist organization: Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, which was previously linked to al Qaeda.

I don't have a dryer or a microwave, and I've adapted to a new way of living. AdvertisementFive years ago, I booked a one-way ticket from the US to Morocco with no idea of what to expect. I was surprised at how much I learned about living in my time in Meknes, where I now live. AdvertisementWhen I began asking friends questions when I needed to fix or buy something in Morocco, I learned that repair and secondhand shops are everywhere. Although I still sometimes feel the shift in cultural values between what I grew up with in the US and what I've experienced during my time in Morocco, I've learned what it truly means to live in a community here.

After I moved out, my mom kept trying to get me to take boxes of my old childhood toys. When I finally had to deal with it, I learned a new appreciation for my mom and her sentimentality. I was helping my mom move from her 3-story forever home into a 55+ condo community, and everything she'd saved from my childhood had to go. As I came across the old assignments and publications, amidst my childhood toys, my feelings of stress and aggravation transformed into a flood of love and gratitude. CNN —The ancient Lycians knew a thing or two about democracy. Drive around the coast of this beautiful region and you’ll never be too far from a spectacular city of the dead – elaborate tombs carved by Lycians into the sides of cliffs overlooking towns, valleys and shorelines. This cliff tomb above the city of Fethiye is a great place to watch the sun go down. It’s a mystery, says Catherine Draycott, an associate professor of archaeology at the UK’s Durham University, who has studied Lycian cliff tombs, as well as sarcophagi and another rarer variation — sarcophagi placed atop pillars. Nearly 100 former national security officials signed a letter criticizing President-elect Donald Trump's decision to nominate former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence and called for closed-door Senate hearings to review any government information about her. In the letter obtained by NBC News, the officials urged the Senate to "carefully evaluate" whether Gabbard is "equipped" for the position, which requires Senate confirmation. "Following her trip to Syria, for example, Ms. Gabbard aligned herself with Russian and Syrian officials." The former officials also proposed closed-door hearings that would allow lawmakers to fully review any government files on Gabbard, a former Democratic House member from Hawaii.
