Dave Pearson survived a shark attack, but faced vitriol online for it afterwards. His isolation led him to found a support group for shark attack survivors, called Bite Club. I was attacked by a bull shark and she was attacked by a white shark, but they were both similar sizes. In the separation , we decided to keep the 173 shares of Veralto we received due to our ownership of 520 shares of Danaher. When we do that, we see a very favorable picture heading into next year and three reasons to be bullish. Veralto management is targeting long-term core growth in the mid-single-digit range on a percentage basis, whereas Danaher management sees ex-Veralto growth at a high-single-digit rate over the long term. So, as it stands we're already looking at a business that stands to see overall growth accelerate. It's also worth noting that our portfolio stands to benefit from any growth in the stand-alone shares of Veralto.

Total revenue for the reported quarter increased 9% year over year to $78.94 billion, beating analysts' expectations of $77.9 billion, according to estimates compiled by LSEG, formerly known as Refinitiv. COST YTD mountain Costco YTD Bottom line It was another good quarter down from Costco, as its leadership on price continues to drive people to its stores. Meanwhile, Costco has virtually been unaffected by the inventory and theft troubles facing the industry, a sign of operational excellence. Costco's reported gross margins, excluding membership fees (which flow directly into profits), expanded 42 basis points from last year to 10.6%. Core merchandise was a 51-basis-point improvement on a reported basis and 28-basis-point improvement excluding the decline in the price of gasoline from the year-ago period.

After the September meeting pause last week, the target range for the fed funds rate remained at 5.25% to 5.50%. First, I don't know a soul besides me who agrees with that 20-year versus fed funds rate yield prognosis. They think the fed funds rate will come down or the 20-year yield is already extended. Second, I don't know anyone else who believes the economy is so strong that the Fed is correct to keep on an anti-inflation course. I don't think so.

We started buying semiconductor giant Broadcom (AVGO) last month and added to our position a few times since it reported fiscal third-quarter results Aug. 31. Indeed, the Thursday morning sell-off in Broadcom, which was down 4.3% at its intraday lows, is an overreaction. While Broadcom's AI revenue is growth is growing incredibly fast, the rest of its semiconductor business is stabilizing after working through its post-Covid inventory gluts. In fact, with the additional of VMware, Broadcom's companywide revenues will be about half semiconductor and half software. Our September meeting comes at a difficult time for the stock market. As I said in a recent Sunday column , money can and will be made in this tightening cycle. With the exception of September and the months of February and August, the stock market has been fairly robust in 2023. This kind of bullish move during a tightening cycle is not exceptional. The market has gained 13% on average when a tightening cycle is completed.

Nike, under CEO John Donahoe, continued its total dominance that it had under previous leaders Mark Parker and Phil Knight. Shares of BJ's Wholesale Club are ready to make a comeback against rival Costco, according to TD Cowen. "We like BJ's wholistic approach to club membership engagement which incorporates digital analytics & a complete basket value proposition with strong appeal to a younger demographic," analyst Oliver Chen wrote in a note Thursday. But Chen sees BJ's catching up as it leverages its customer base, grows stores and takes some market share. The average BJ's customer is 43 years old with a $104,000 income, compared to an average age of 45 years old and income of $103,000 for the typical Costco customer, according to TD Cowen. To be sure, TD Cowen is bullish on Costco as well, rating the warehouse competitor outperform and seeing it as a top pick in the sector.

For nearly two decades, the Carbrook Golf Club near Brisbane, Australia, had the ultimate water hazard: a lake teeming with bull sharks. It all started in 1996 when raging floods swept six young bull sharks from a nearby river into a 51-acre lake near the golf course’s 14th hole. When the floodwaters receded, the sharks found themselves stuck, surrounded by grassy hills and curious golfers. The sharks, according to a new study, are more than just a fluke along the fairway. In research published last month in the journal Marine and Fisheries Science, Peter Gausmann, a shark scientist and lecturer at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany, said that the cartilaginous club members of Carbrook bull sharks demonstrate that bull sharks can live indefinitely in low-salinity aquatic environments.
