Not content with Dubai having the tallest building, the deepest pool or the highest hotel, urban design firm URB hopes to add one more superlative feather to the city’s cap: the world’s “greenest” highway. More than a few still carry the scars, including one 80-year-old woman I recently spoke to about her middle school experience. Instead of facing a mean girl or boy of his own, he wound up with a social media influencer in his class who held sway over the entire grade. “All of these issues with social media are coming to a head right now and there’s wildly insufficient research,” Marc Berkman, CEO of the non-profit Organization for Social Media Safety, told me recently. Middle school is complicated enough without all the extra pressures generated by having a social media influencer sitting next to you. Many hotels provide complimentary pajamas, slippers, and toiletriesAt some hotels in Japan I had access to as many toiletries as I needed. Anna HainesIn Japan, I'd usually also find a set of pajamas and slippers in the closet for guests to use. Even in big cities like Tokyo, garbage bins are almost completely absent from public spaces. Public spaces are incredibly quiet, creating a calm atmosphereEven shopping malls in Japan felt pretty quiet. Cars that run on hydrogen emit zero carbon at the tailpipe, but 96% of the world’s hydrogen is still derived from fossil fuels like methane gas. That makes most hydrogen-powered cars much more polluting than battery electric vehicles, or EVs, and only marginally cleaner than traditional combustion engine cars. Toyota is supplying the Game’s official fleet, which includes 500 Mirai cars and 10 coaches that run on hydrogen, as well as 1,150 EVs, to ferry athletes around. It is also one a few major automakers betting on hydrogen-powered vehicles, as well. Hydrogen vehicles have so far failed to take off as a popular choice for consumers, and very little infrastructure to refuel with hydrogen exists.

There may be no better place to see evidence of Britain’s shift to cleaner energy than a sleek industrial complex on the Humber estuary outside Hull, a faded port city. On a July morning, workers in a brightly lit building were preparing molds for fiberglass wind turbine blades longer than football fields. Outside on the docks, squat six-wheeled vehicles gingerly maneuvered a blade weighing 50 metric tons for loading onto a ship that would take it to Scotland for installation. The factory, which is operated by Siemens Gamesa, a unit of the German company Siemens Energy, began producing the massive blades in 2016. The factory is a case study for how the new British government under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose Labour Party delivered a decisive election victory last week, hopes to use investment in clean energy to bolster stagnant economic growth.

The brine contains lithium, a silvery white metal essential for making electric vehicle batteries and in high demand as the world shifts to green energy. Eramet is being closely watched by competitors from the U.S. to Chile that are also working to commercialize DLE. It aims to pump out its first ton of lithium carbonate in November and scale up to 24,000 metric tons a year by mid-2025. The technique allows Eramet to produce a ton of lithium carbonate in one week, versus a year with traditional methods. "You go step by step, making sure you can get to the next phase," said engineer Soledad Gamarra.

We think so," Melius analyst Ben Reitzes said in a research report on Monday. We think infrastructure software may be harder to disrupt," the Melius analyst said. Apple, AMD and Intel should benefit from looming product cycles and an eventual easing of cloud capital expenditures spending, according to Reitzes. For Apple, the analyst believes consumers will favor its iPhone 16 out in September given its "Apple Intelligence" AI capabilities. His price targets on Intel and AMD suggest the stocks can advance some 16% and 22%, respectively, over the next year.

Scientists have uncovered a new source of hazardous "forever chemical" pollution: the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries found in most electric vehicles. Some lithium-ion battery technologies use a class of PFAS chemicals, or per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, that helps make batteries less flammable and conduct electricity. Scientists tested more than a dozen lithium-ion batteries used in EVs and consumer electronics like laptops, and found bis-FASIs at various concentrations. They can also leach into the environment from landfills, where the majority of lithium-ion batteries end up. AdvertisementThe study said only about 5% of lithium-ion batteries are recycled, and by 2040, there could be some 8 million tons of lithium-ion battery waste.

Natural gas has historically been a regional commodity, with supply limited by pipeline networks. "Natural gas is starting to resemble oil in that there's a more global market emerging for it," Antia told CNBC in an interview. The global capacity to liquefy natural gas has grown 60% since 2014, reaching 483 million metric tons annually as of February 2024, according to the IGU. Cheniere: LNG powerhouse The U.S. dominates the global LNG market, accounting for 21% of global exports last year and shipping 84 million metric tons, according to the IGU. Cheniere Energy , a global LNG leader based in Houston, is an opportunity for investors who want exposure to the growing global gas market, Antia said.

Investors who want to support the energy transition should consider backing natural gas as a fuel that can "make a really huge impact" by replacing coal, according to a top analyst at asset manager PGIM. "Natural gas is very complementary to them, it is highly dispatchable and it is very low cost." The U.S. is the largest natural gas exporter in the world, according to the Energy Information Administration. "Pipelines offer a very different kind of risk/reward proposition for an investor than, say, a natural gas producer who is very exposed to the volatility of the natural gas price," Antia said. "When it comes to LNG infrastructure, Cheniere is a company that provides the infrastructure necessary to liquefy as well as re-gasifying natural gas," Antia said.

With Monday’s Supreme Court presidential immunity ruling likely preventing a trial in the federal election subversion case before the election, Trump is poised to avoid pre-election trials in the three most significant criminal prosecutions he faces. It will determine Trump’s legal fate. A Supreme Court ruling that hamstrings the DC federal subversion caseThe charges by special counsel Jack Smith alleging Trump subverted the 2020 election was the second to last of the four cases brought. “You can’t charge a former president for a crime for the first time in history without going to Supreme Court,” Cobb said. The on-cycle recruiting process is not easy on these young bankers, who are often already working 80+ hour weeks in their new investment-banking jobs. The conventional wisdom on Wall Street has always been that the most hawkish PE firms walk away with the most impressive candidates. Odyssey doesn't participate in on-cycle recruiting because it prefers to fill positions in what is known as "off-cycle," or the months that follow the initial recruiting process. It all leaves me thinking about the PE recruiting cycles of the future. To be overly cautious, I've already penciled in a calendar reminder for 2025: "Monitor for PE recruiting cycle kickoff."

By the time I turned 30, I’d been telling people I was older for years, because I’m not the type to bemoan the loss of my youth.
