New Hampshire voters will head to the polls Tuesday for a primary that will set up the matchup for one of just two governor’s races in presidential battleground states this year. In addition to North Carolina, New Hampshire is the only other swing state to hold a race for governor this election cycle. “I think that helps people in New Hampshire realize that Kelly Ayotte is a New Hampshire Republican, not a straight party loyalist,” Williams said. In New Hampshire, abortion is banned after fetal viability, or around the 24th week of pregnancy. “We’ve seen in the last few years that governors and state leadership sort of make or break it when it comes to protecting abortion rights,” Levy said.

Concerns about the use of cryptocurrencies for illegal activity resulted in an effective ban on crypto mining and transactions. After a massive public outcry at the end of 2021, mining companies in Kazakhstan were effectively cut off from the grid. Today, the US makes up about 40% of the global hashrate — up from 17% during China's 2021 peak — making America the biggest hub for bitcoin mining. However, in recent years, bitcoin mining has become increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small number of private companies. Given how much energy bitcoin mining consumes, it's worth questioning whether its presence in the US is really worth the trade-off.

CNN —Hawaii’s most controversial nature spot has once again become a center of concern, with 14 people recently arrested for accessing the Haiku Stairs on the island of Oahu according to officials. Eight of the 14 were arrested on September 3, although it’s not clear if they were hiking together. The Haiku Stairs, sometimes called the “stairway to heaven,” were closed to the public in 1987. In 2021, the Honolulu City Council voted to remove the Haiku Stairs. A local group called Friends of the Haiku Stairs is pushing back against the stairs’ removal, arguing that the $2.5 million process is too expensive.

When researching the properties, he confirmed their tax status as short-term rentals on the county site. Jason Gobey, another short-term rental owner, told BI he researched and spoke to real-estate agents as well as others before buying his one-bedroom condo in Kihei in 2019. He also said he confirmed the property's tax status as a short-term rental and had no idea there could be an issue with it. Though some of the Minatoya List properties will likely be converted to long-term rentals, Church said it is not financially feasible for him. But the benefit of adding the Minatoya List properties to the housing stock is that they are already built.

Businessman Eric Hovde won the Wisconsin Republican primary for Senate, NBC News projects, setting up a critical battleground state race against Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin. Baldwin’s seat is a top priority for both parties in the battle for control of the closely divided Senate. Baldwin has also fared better than the top of the Democratic ticket in some recent Wisconsin polling. An independently wealthy businessman, Hovde, who ran unsuccessfully for Senate in 2012, has already loaned his campaign $13 million. With Hovde long viewed as the favorite to win the GOP nomination, the two candidates have already been trading barbs.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., fended off several primary challengers Tuesday, NBC News projects, a victory for progressives after two of her fellow members of the “squad” suffered defeats this summer. Omar defeated former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels, who lost to her by just 2 percentage points in the 2022 primary, and two other challengers in Minnesota’s 5th District. Unlike other progressives who have sharply criticized Israel, Omar did not face an onslaught of attack ads from outside groups. At the same point in the 2022 primary, her campaign had spent just $71,000. Samuels’ campaign, meanwhile, spent $1.2 million on this year’s race.

A former Kansas police chief linked to the Aug. 11, 2023, raid of a local newspaper was formally charged with one count of interference with the judicial process. She collapsed and died the day after the raid, and Meyer blamed her death on the stress of the raid. Joan Meyer, co-owner of the Marion County Record, swears at police officers in her home on Aug. 11, 2023. Marion County Attorney Joel Ensey, however, withdrew the search warrants after determining that "insufficient evidence exists to establish a legally sufficient nexus between this alleged crime and the places searched and the items seized." Tuesday’s primaries will also determine the matchups for some notable House seats, with Republicans looking to defend their slim majority. While Steil is expected to face Democratic former Rep. Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, the progressive lightning rod whose unabated criticism of Israel has deepened the fissures in the Democratic Party over the war in Gaza, won her primary on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press. While she prevailed, it has been a rocky summer for the “squad,” the ultraliberal faction of lawmakers in the House. Two other members of the group, Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York and Representative Cori Bush of Missouri, suffered primary defeats in June and August after pro-Israel groups spent millions trying to influence those contests. Ms. Omar, 41, who is seeking a fourth term in Congress, heavily outspent her three opponents, including Don Samuels, a former Minneapolis City Council member, who came within 2,500 votes of ousting her in the 2022 primary. Unlike several other primary contests, Ms. Omar’s race did not see a large amount of campaign spending originating outside the district.

Holden recalled meeting with Trump at Trump Tower before departing for Atlantic City, New Jersey, where they were planning to tour Trump’s since-closed Taj Mahal casino. Also aboard was Barbara Res, Trump’s former executive vice president of construction, who told Politico that the man on the helicopter was definitely Holden. Oklahoma City AP —A third set of remains with a gunshot wound has been found at a Tulsa cemetery in the search for graves of victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, according to a state official. “We have exhumed him, he is in the forensic lab and undergoing analysis,” on-site at Tulsa’s Oaklawn Cemetery, Stackelbeck said. The discovery comes nearly a month after the first identification of remains previously exhumed during the search for massacre victims were identified as World War I veteran C.L. Forensic anthropologist Phoebe Stubblefield said no gunshot wound was found in Daniel’s remains, but said the remains were fragmented and a cause of death could not be determined. The remains exhumed during the current search are among 40 graves found, Stackelbeck said, and meet the criteria for how massacre victims were buried, based on newspaper articles at the time, death certificates and funeral home records.

According to an NBC News review of police hiring laws in Illinois, Grayson’s hiring did not appear to have violated state or local police hiring policies. And an NBC News review of hiring practices around the country shows that there is a patchwork of hiring standards that vary from state to state and from community to community. Experts say the hiring standards in many small law enforcement agencies are often lower than those of large city agencies. In Illinois, in addition to its state law, city councils and county commissions can also set their own stricter hiring rules. They first arrived at the beginning of July: dozens of masked white supremacists, shuffling out of U-Hauls, to march through Nashville carrying upside-down American flags. The neo-Nazis poured into the historic Metro courthouse to disrupt a City Council meeting, harassed descendants of Holocaust survivors and yelled racist slurs at young Black children performing on a downtown street. The appearance of white nationalists on the streets of a major American city laid bare the growing brazenness of the two groups, the Patriot Front and the Goyim Defense League. Their provocations enraged and alarmed civic leaders and residents in Nashville, causing the city to grapple with how to confront the groups without violating free speech protections. “Nashville is a microcosm of the greater country, and we are at a moment where we have to decide who we are.”

Exceptions to the changes, which came into force Thursday, include children under 2 years of age, and visiting students and educational trips. Tourists and guides who break the 25-person limit or use loudspeakers will face fines of approximately $50-$100.
