Federer vows not to be a stranger to tour in retirement
  + stars: | 2023-09-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Sept 23 (Reuters) - Swiss maestro Roger Federer said he had missed everything about tennis following his retirement last year and vowed to not be a stranger to the tour despite his off-court commitments and the challenge of parenting two sets of twins. "In a way, I miss everything about the game, the exciting moments spent on court, break points saved, winning match points, holding up trophies, walking past the fans, taking selfies," Federer said. I don't have the weight of another match, of another practice where the body is maybe not right. Can't have it all, I've had it for 25 years and it was incredible and I'd do it all over again." "I've made myself a promise that I'll be no stranger to the tour, I'll try to come back from time to time, not all the time, but from time to time," Federer said.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A federal judge has halted implementation of a California law intended to restrict companies’ use of information gathered from young internet users in order to protect the privacy of minors. U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman on Monday granted a preliminary injunction, saying the legislation interferes with firms' use of the internet in ways the state has failed to justify. It would also prohibit businesses from collecting most types of personal information about young internet users, including their physical locations. “The State has no right to enforce obligations that would essentially press private companies into service as government censors,” Freeman wrote. It was challenged by NetChoice, a commercial association whose members include Google, Amazon, Meta and TikTok.

The Federal Aviation Administration indicated Friday that it is moving toward requiring that planes be equipped with technology designed to prevent close calls around airports. The FAA asked an internal advisory panel to make recommendations on how to require systems that would alert pilots if they are lined up to land on the wrong runway or a taxiway, or when the runway they have chosen is too short. The FAA said the move is part of its effort to eliminate “serious close calls.” The National Transportation Safety Board has started investigations into seven such incidents since January. Planes typically have GPS-based systems that warn pilots if they are in danger of hitting the ground or an obstacle. He said the FAA move “sounds like a very good idea.”Preliminary reports about close calls this year point to pilot error in some cases and air controller mistakes in others.

‘The First Year’ Review: Allende’s Rule in Chile
  + stars: | 2023-09-07 | by ( Devika Girish | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
A few years before Patricio Guzmán directed his tripartite masterpiece, “The Battle of Chile,” about the events leading to the C.I.A.-backed military coup that toppled the socialist government of President Salvador Allende in 1973, the Chilean filmmaker made “The First Year”: an account of the inaugural 12 months of Allende’s rule. Guzmán traveled through Chile, interviewing the working class about Allende’s socialist policies and accumulating a crackling portrait of hope and incipient change. The French filmmaker Chris Marker saw the documentary in 1971 and decided to help show it in France, enlisting numerous actors, including Delphine Seyrig, to dub the Spanish dialogue in French. That version, arriving this week in a sparkling restoration at Anthology Film Archives, is a remarkable document not only of a fleeting moment of historical promise, but also of an earnest gesture of international solidarity.

CNN —A US District Judge has blocked an Arkansas social media age verification law that was set to go in effect Friday, according to a Thursday court filing. The act was aimed at requiring “age verification for use of social media; and to clarify liability for failure to perform age verification for use of social media and illegal retention of data,” according to Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ office. It’s believed this would have been the first law in the US requiring age verification from new social media users, and to require parental consent, to go into effect. “We’re pleased the court sided with the First Amendment and stopped Arkansas’ unconstitutional law from censoring free speech online and undermining the privacy of Arkansans, their families and their businesses as our case proceeds,” Marchese said in the statement. Brooks said the act is blocked “pending final disposition of the issues on the merits.”CNN reached out to Huckabee Sanders’ office for comment.

U.S. One dollar banknotes are seen in front of displayed stock graph in this illustration taken, February 8, 2021. Managing the ballooning debt is more challenging now than when S&P stripped the United States of its AAA rating in 2011. The deficit before interest payments was lower then, economic growth was weak but still higher than prevailing interest rates, and the Fed was buying boatloads of bonds. Interest payments as a share of federal revenue, spending, and the economy are set to reach historically high levels early in the next decade. It's not just the supply of debt that matters - demand to hold that debt is critical.

It was the compromise debt limit deal — not the employment number — that caused the market to rally. The shorts were correct to press their bets if there was no debt deal and we got an employment number that was a steamer. A short squeeze happens when short sellers having to buy stocks to cover their short positions, pushing prices higher.
