This week, Michigan will award delegates in both a Republican primary, on Tuesday, and a statewide convention, on Saturday. He did not mention Ms. Haley. As considerable as Ms. Haley’s loss was, polls suggest she faces even larger defeats in contests on March 5, Super Tuesday.

Influential Republicans vying to be Donald J. Trump’s vice-presidential running mate appeared at a conservative conference near Washington, auditioning for the spot at Mr. Trump’s side on the campaign trail with fire and flattery. Four people seen as contenders in the “Apprentice”-like spectacle made appearances on Friday at the Conservative Political Action Conference, known as CPAC. Kristi Noem of South Dakota and Kari Lake, a Senate candidate in Arizona who rose to conservative prominence with a full-throated embrace of Mr. Trump’s stolen election lies. The conservative and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy was scheduled to speak later in the evening. At one point, Mr. DeSantis lacerated Mr. Trump’s record as president, saying he had failed to deliver on many campaign promises. “I was in Congress the first two years when Trump was president,” Mr. DeSantis said. One supporter asked Mr. DeSantis if he was afraid of being marginalized by Mr. Trump. Mr. DeSantis urged caution on such news reports but appeared to address years-old bad blood between him and one of Mr. Trump’s top aides, Susie Wiles, who had once worked for Mr. DeSantis. Mr. DeSantis sounded very much like a politician still eyeing his political future, including as he talked about pressing for term limits and other national concerns.

Former President Donald J. Trump, the front-runner for the Republican nomination, has repeatedly attacked central elements of the Inflation Reduction Act, including tax credits for purchasing electric vehicles. “Otherwise it’s all going to be on the chopping block.”The Inflation Reduction Act contains various tax credits and other subsidies to incentivize companies to deploy more clean energy projects. It also includes tax breaks for consumers to offset the cost of electric vehicles, heat pumps and other energy-efficient appliances. That could cut the number of eligible vehicles, potentially hindering progress toward the Biden administration’s goal of having electric vehicles make up half of new car sales by 2030. The estimated cost of the Inflation Reduction Act’s energy incentives has effectively doubled since it passed, largely because forecasters believe the legislation will be more popular than they originally expected.

Even in a campaign in which Mr. Trump’s dominance has sapped the race of much of its drama, his win in Nevada felt particularly preordained. Embarrassingly for Ms. Haley, she was heavily outvoted in that election by a “None of These Candidates” option on the ballot. She was essentially unopposed, but even without Mr. Trump on the ballot, Republican voters rejected her. Ms. Haley still won the contest, but its results were effectively immaterial. Mr. McDonald also repeatedly pushed false claims of voter fraud that remain at the heart of Mr. Trump’s lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

Mr. Trump needled Ms. Haley for her performance on social media, calling the result a “bad night” for her. In a Trump campaign email, Steven Cheung, a spokesman, called it “brutal” and contended that the Haley campaign acknowledged it had “intentionally disrespected the people of Nevada” by refusing to campaign there. Ms. Haley cast her party as mired in the same disorder that surrounds the man who has remade it in his image. It does not help that Mr. Trump’s allies have worked behind the scenes to skew primary and delegate rules to his advantage. Nevertheless, onstage in Los Angeles, Ms. Haley told the audience she wasn’t going anywhere.

She thanked her supporters in the address, urging them to carry on her campaign’s message and run for office themselves. “If you feel that you have a deeper appreciation of the promise of America and of your responsibility to do something about it,” Ms. Williamson said, then, she added, “this campaign will have succeeded.”Ms. Williamson on Tuesday placed a very distant third place in Nevada’s primary election, behind President Biden — who won nearly 90 percent of the vote — and behind “none of these candidates,” a ballot option that earned less than 6 percent of the vote. She had put significant effort into campaigning in the state before the primary, but ultimately drew under 3 percent of the vote.

The Federal Election Commission deadline is here for end-of-year finance reports that will reveal how much money the presidential candidates had raised recently, and how much cash their campaigns had on hand. The end-of-year fund-raising and spending reports can reveal a lot about the trajectory of a presidential campaign, and the health of its money operation. Spending by presidential campaigns alone — not counting super PACs — topped $4 billion for the 2020 election. Just this week alone, a Democratic super PAC supporting Mr. Biden began reserving $250 million in advertising in battleground states, scheduled to begin after the Democratic National Convention in August. For example, the main super PAC supporting Senate Democrats has about $61.5 million on hand, compared with $29.1 million for the top PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates.

Elite Republican donors flocked to Ms. Haley last month in the hopes that she could be the candidate who could beat Mr. Trump. Representatives of Mr. Trump and Ms. Haley are also scheduled to meet soon with a group of Republican megadonors, seeking to win their favor. Mr. Biden has made clear that he also sees the contest as an opportunity to demonstrate party unity. Democrats have raised concerns about Mr. Biden underperforming in polls among Black voters in key states, particularly with men. Off the trail on Friday, Ms. Haley assailed Mr. Trump as “unhinged” on Fox News as she continued to try and bait him into a one-on-one debate. The presidential primary features Ms. Haley on the ballot, but won’t count toward the G.O.P. The caucuses feature Mr. Trump without a single major competitor — and that’s the contest that will determine who gets the state’s delegate prize. Critics have argued that the state party set up the caucuses to benefit Mr. Trump — which the party denies. The former president and his team were hoping his showing there would persuade Ms. Haley to end her campaign.

But Republicans — who have joined Mr. Trump in spending the past four years baselessly attacking mail-in voting as unsecure — objected to the change. So the Nevada Republican Party decided to organize caucuses instead. Mr. Trump and the rest of the candidates who have since dropped out chose the party-run caucuses. Mr. Trump will collect the state’s delegates, but that won’t say anything about the competition between them, because no voter will have the option to choose between them. Still, Mr. Gellman said the split system could allow both candidates to declare victory in Nevada — as Mr. Trump already did on Tuesday night.

Representative Lauren Boebert, the far-right firebrand, faced off against eight Republican opponents on Thursday night in a debate in the new Colorado district she is seeking to represent in Congress. After barely managing to win re-election in Colorado’s Third Congressional District against a Democrat in 2022, she is running this year in a much more conservative district, the Fourth. On Thursday evening, Ms. Boebert appeared at ease delivering fiery rhetoric and espousing her pro-Trump, hard-right stances among similarly conservative peers at the debate in Fort Lupton. “Everyone will talk like a Freedom Caucus member, but there is only one who governs as a Freedom Caucus member,” Ms. Boebert said in her opening statement, adding that she did not expect a “coronation” in her new district and that she looked forward to “earning your vote.”But Ms. Boebert also faced steady criticism from her rivals about switching districts — having relocated to the other side of the state to improve her chances after a strong primary challenger emerged in the Third District.

Painting herself as an outsider, despite her insider résumé, she pledged to take on Mr. Trump and the political class behind him. Mr. DeSantis, who endorsed Mr. Trump on his way out of the race, earned some praise and a reprieve from the former president’s persistent name-calling. In fact, most have now thrown their support behind Mr. Trump, underscoring the steep challenges she faces in securing allies to challenge the famously spiteful Mr. Trump.
