DETROIT – General Motors is changing its product lineup strategy to include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, CEO Mary Barra told investors Tuesday. More companies are reconsidering the viability of hybrid vehicles to appease consumer demand and avoid costly penalties related to those federal fuel economy and emissions standards. Most of GM's main competitors offer traditional hybrids as well as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The only hybrid GM currently offers in the U.S. is a traditional hybrid version of the Chevrolet Corvette. GM led the way for plug-in electric vehicles with the Chevrolet Volt during the 2010s.

And the company predicts a small improvement this year even as it plans for lower vehicle selling prices due to increased discounts. Cost cutting by simplifying engineering and manufacturing saved GM about $1 billion last year, Jacobson said, with another $1 billion expected this year. The company expects EV losses to ease this year and hit low-to-mid single digit profit margins in 2025 as it adds more EVs to its lineup. It also took a $1.7 billion accounting charge on the valuation of its electric vehicle inventory that is going to bring losses, Jacobson said. This year, the company expects $1.3 billion in higher labor costs and is prepared for about a $3 billion hit due to lower prices, Jacobson said.

Manuals for other Tesla models also advise immediate removal of corrosive substances — but "to prevent damage to the paint," rather than the exterior metal itself. Road salt is one of the biggest culprits of corrosion in cars, but typically, the undercarriage is most at risk since paint can protect the body panels. Chevrolet warns salt may damage the paint of its Silverado if it remains on the exterior for extended periods of time. Of course, depending on who you ask, the Cybertruck's lack of a finish on the steel may be a feature instead of a bug.

CNN —Ford will shut down one of two production shifts in April at the Dearborn, Michigan, factory that builds the F-150 Lightning electric pickup. The move is part of “matching F-150 Lightning production to customer demand,” the company said Friday. While sales of electric vehicles increased in 2023, the growth was slower than many industry experts had expected. Ford still projects an increase in Lightning sales this year after a 55% jump to 24,000 trucks last year. The 24,000 in Lightning sales is still a small fraction of overall Ford F-series pickup sales.

On a trip from the mountains back to his home in Burbank, Calif., he and his wife heard weird clicking noises coming from the dashboard. A short time later, the cruise control went out. A few days after that, in his driveway, the car’s screens went blank and the car wouldn’t start.

Vernon, New Jersey CNN —General Motors is very clear that its engineers didn’t create the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, the first hybrid Corvette, to save gas. Instead they wanted to make an all-wheel-drive Corvette, and the best way to do that was simply to attach a powerful electric motor to the front wheels. Unlike in a Toyota Prius, or almost any other hybrid, the E-Ray’s electric motor almost never drives the car on its own. For that, GM offers the lighter and more powerful Corvette Z06, with its high-revving 670-horsepower V8 and no electric motor. Instead, GM has focused on fully electric technology and, before too long, there will be a fully electric Corvette.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was opening the preliminary evaluation into the 2016 through 2019 model year Chevrolet Volt after 61 complaints tied to the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM). Some complaints reported there was little to no warning before the loss of operating power or reduced power mode occurred. Another owner reported the Volt would not drive more than over 35 miles per hour on the highway "and it stops driving on electricity randomly."

CNN —General Motors announced Wednesday that it’s cutting spending at its self-driving car unit, Cruise. GM had previously announced it intends to cut back Cruise’s operations once the company restarts testing and ride hailing services. The Cruise vehicle then pulled forward, dragging the person along pavement for 20 feet. Following the suspension, Cruise announced it was pausing its public operations throughout the US and, last week, Cruise chief executive Kyle Vogt resigned. The reduction in spending relates to the broad reigning in of production and operations for Cruise.
