The central clash in the pivotal Senate race in Montana — and the fight for control of the Senate itself — was on full display Monday night as Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican Tim Sheehy faced off in a heated debate. Like other vulnerable Senate Democrats, Tester tried to make it personal — touting his bipartisan bona fides, highlighting his own connections to his red-leaning state and suggesting his opponent cannot be trusted. Montana is the party’s next top target, with Tester running for re-election in a state Trump won by 16 points in 2020. James Richmond, 50, an IT consultant and voter in Helena, pointed to those comments in explaining why he plans to support Sheehy, despite supporting Tester’s work for veterans. An AARP poll conducted in late August found Sheehy leading Tester by 6 points, 55% to 49%.

Pete Rose, Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader who was banned from the sport after gambling on his own team as a player and manager, died Monday. Rose played 24 seasons in the major leagues, the last three of which were as a player-manager. Former Major League Baseball player and manager Pete Rose in Las Vegas on Dec. 15, 2015. In the years following his ban from baseball, Rose applied several times for reinstatement but was never admitted. Rose admitted to having sex with her — but said it was in 1975, when he thought she was 16, Ohio’s age of consent, according to the filing.

Rose was one of baseball’s greats – a winning-obsessed sparkplug who topped MLB’s all-time hit list with 4,256 over a 24-season career. It wasn’t until 2004 that Rose publicly admitted betting on baseball and the Reds, though he denied ever betting against his own team. Sometimes, on the weekend of baseball Hall of Fame inductions in Cooperstown, New York, he also would hold autograph sessions at a nearby bookstore. While Cooperstown didn’t admit him into its Hall of Fame, the Reds got him into theirs with the commissioner’s permission. That was the perfect way to capture Rose, said Johnny Bench, the Hall of Fame catcher.

New York CNN —DirecTV announced Monday it’s buying rival Dish Network, ending multiple decades of on-and-off talks about the satellite services merging. The agreement provides DirecTV and Dish with greater scale, a DirecTV spokesperson told CNN. The newly merged DirecTV-Dish entity will continue to support the Dish brand for the foreseeable future, the DirecTV spokesperson said. DirecTV does not currently have plans to make changes to the existing Dish or Sling TV brands, meaning that current Dish customers should not be concerned about being forced over to DirecTV. The deal also strengthens the duo’s foothold in the industry, allowing them to more easily compete with pay TV rivals and streaming services.

Dish's "Seinfeld" strategy appears to have ended quite like the actual show — with its finale a generally-accepted disappointment. In 2011, Dish cofounder Charlie Ergen first mentioned "Seinfeld" on an earnings call, responding to an analyst's question about his company's mixed bag of assets. When Dish and DirecTV discussed merging in 2014, DirecTV's market capitalization was about $40 billion, and Dish's market valuation was more than $28 billion. DirecTV sold a year later to AT&T for $49 billion in equity value. EchoStar was motivated to move Dish and its debt off its balance as a $2 billion debt payment matures in November, CNBC reported last week.

Pete Rose, who holds the Major League Baseball record for hits and games played, has died at the age of 83, according to a spokesperson for the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner in Nevada. The hard-charging Rose, nicknamed “Charlie Hustle,” broke Ty Cobb’s 57-year-old hits record in 1985. After his playing career, Rose continued as manager of the Reds. In 1989, Rose was banned from baseball for life after an investigation concluded that he had bet on games while he was both a Reds player and manager. Over the years, Rose applied for reinstatement as well as possible inclusion into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Sales are expected to fall roughly 2% during the third quarter compared with the same time in 2023, to about 3.9 million vehicles sold, according to Cox Automotive and Edmunds.com. That would be a roughly 5% decrease compared with the second quarter of this year. "2024 has been a volatile year for the new vehicle market, and more of the same is expected in Q4," said Charlie Chesbrough, Cox Automotive senior economist. Both Cox and Edmunds expect light-duty U.S. vehicle sales to total about 15.7 million vehicles in 2024.
