Even small changes to a platform’s algorithm can derail a creator’s visibility, and income, overnight.
When TikTok first gained popularity, it was known for lip syncing, dancing, and viral challenges. We used data from Famous Birthdays to see the breakout TikTokers each year since 2019. TikTok's first homegrown influencers, like Charli D'Amelio and Addison Rae Easterling, grew in popularity with dancing and lip syncing videos filmed from their childhood bedrooms. It identified Addison Rae Easterling, who now has 88 million TikTok followers, as a breakout creator when she first gained momentum on TikTok, contacting her when she had just 300,000 followers, she told the LA Times. Pepsi launched a campaign Thursday encouraging customers to try the combination and use the hashtag #PilkandCookies (as in Pepsi plus milk) to showcase their Santa-friendly concoctions. “Combining Pepsi and milk has long been a secret hack among Pepsi fans,” said Todd Kaplan, Pepsi’s chief marketing officer, in a statement about the campaign. Pepsi is now publicizing the mix as its spin on “dirty soda,” a popular TikTok trend that combines soda with syrup and cream. Pepsi is recommending a number of recipes to those who want to go beyond just Pepsi and milk, perhaps hoping to launch its own viral combination. CNN —“Dancing With the Stars” has crowned a new winner and she’s a TikTok-teen queen. Shangela and Gleb Savchenko danced to to “Queen Bee” by Rochelle Diamante and also scored a 36 out of 40. Host Tyra Banks announced that fourth place went to Shangela and Savchenko. Third place went to Brady and Carson. Second place went to Windey and Chmerkovskiy.
