After we published our research, the story of driving rats went viral in the media. The tale of rat tailsIt wasn’t just the effects of anticipation on rat behavior that caught our attention. While it’s vital to study negative emotions such as fear and stress, positive experiences also shape the brain in significant ways. As animals – human or otherwise – navigate the unpredictability of life, anticipating positive experiences helps drive a persistence to keep searching for life’s rewards. That’s a lesson my lab rats have taught me well.

The rule, proposed nearly a year ago, was mandated by the Inflation Reduction Act, which could make it more difficult for the second Trump administration to dismantle. The methane fee will be charged by the federal government until the companies fix the leaks. This fee was paired with financial incentives for oil and gas companies to fix leaky pipelines or infrastructure. The rule could prove tricky for the incoming Trump administration to overturn because the program was included in Biden’s climate law, which passed Congress in 2022. Undoing it would take another act of Congress; while not impossible if Republicans take the House of Representatives, it could be an uphill climb and take longer than if the Trump administration were acting on its own.

Analysts said tariffs on cars imported from Mexico would have dire consequences for US automakers. Tesla announced in March 2023 that it was planning to build its seventh gigafactory near the industrial hub of Monterrey, Mexico. Trump vowed to clamp down on automakers building cars in Mexico on the campaign trail, and the prospect of new tariffs could force US automakers such as Tesla to make some hard choices about operational or planned factories in Mexico. Analysts told BI that the tariffs floated by Trump would deter automakers such as Tesla from investing in Mexico. Other automakers have expanded their presence in Mexico, despite the uncertainty of the election and the prospect of tariffs under a second Trump term.

A U-turn on US climate policy could be disastrous for the planet, as it raises the risk of emulation. When America does something on the world stage, at least some countries tend to follow. Ahead of Trump’s inauguration, negotiators will ramp down their expectations in terms of what’s possible at the talks, he said. AdvertisementA key sticking point for the 73,479,065 Americans (and counting) who voted for President-elect Donald Trump was inflation. Inflationary promisesThe main Trump proposals viewed as inflationary are: sweeping tariffs on imports, mass deportation of immigrants, and lower taxes. Related storiesTypically, US companies simply pass the tariff costs to consumers via higher prices, and company executives are already signaling this to investors. Possible inflation falloutIf Trump delivers on all of these proposals, then a rebound in inflation is all but guaranteed, economists have said. AdvertisementIt's worth noting that the tariffs Trump enacted in his first term did not result in a significant inflation increase.

A Spanish research vessel that investigates marine ecosystems has been abruptly diverted from its usual task to take on a new job: Helping in the increasingly desperate search for the missing from Spain’s floods. Carrera, 60, is head of the fleet of the research vessels run by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, a government-funded science center under the umbrella of the Spanish National Research Council. The boat also helped research the impact from the lava flow that reached the sea from the 2021 La Palma volcano eruption in Spain’s Canary Islands. To be clear: Trump does not inherit a world at peace, where America’s unquestioning role as a beacon of freedom and moral superiority has brought enduring calm. Yet Tehran now has experience of Trump as someone willing to be wildly incautious and unafraid of international norms. As President Joe Biden - who did all he could to avoid war with Iran - leaves power, Iran looks incredibly weak. But in the current moment we are at in the war, Ukraine is equally in need of time to regroup and rearm. Does Putin risk Trump taking greater personal offense if that same deal is later betrayed, and their entente exposed as a sham?
