Chart a 10-mile path down the Miami coast, and the options for luxury shopping are endless. But from Fendi to Missoni to Porsche to Bentley, the branded products many shoppers are buying aren’t items you can take home. Branded real estate is surging: The market for name-brand luxury condominium units is projected to grow 12 percent each year between now and 2026, according to a report from the global real estate consultants, Knight Frank. Like blue jean makers and handbag designers, developers have long understood the power of a label, and today in nearly every major city, homeowners can shop residences from well-known hospitality brands like Four Seasons, Aman and Ritz-Carlton. Now more surprising brands are getting in on the trend, with purveyors of both luxury cars and couture looking to condos for their next frontier.

Missoula had 60 homeless encampments in parks as of late August, according to a city report. To address the problem without running afoul of the Ninth Circuit, the City Council passed an emergency ordinance in June making it easier to remove encampments from parks used by youth camps and other groups.

Reception room at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York City, ca. Photo: Museum of the City of New York/Bridgeman ImagesIn one of his epigraphs to this compact book on F. Scott Fitzgerald, Arthur Krystal invokes Lytton Strachey’s advice to the successful biographer: Instead of the “direct method of a scrupulous narration,” the biographer must “attack his subject in unexpected places; he will fall upon the flank or the rear; he will shoot a sudden, revealing searchlight into obscure recesses, hitherto undivined.” The evocation of Strachey in connection with Fitzgerald is surprising since they seem an unlikely pair, but Mr. Krystal quotes him in order to distinguish “Some Unfinished Chaos: The Lives of F. Scott Fitzgerald” from the always-growing list of Fitzgerald biographies that began in 1951, with Arthur Mizener’s “The Far Side of Paradise.” In choosing the plural “Lives,” Mr. Krystal wants to open up his subject to multiple interpretations rather than opting for the “direct method” of settling on the singular explanatory one. His other epigraph is from Fitzgerald himself: “There never was a good biography of a good novelist. There couldn’t be. He’s too many people if he’s any good.”

Historically, regulation often happens gradually as a technology improves or an industry grows, as with cars and television. In 1937, an untested and poisonous liquid version of sulfanilamide, meant to treat bacterial infections, killed more than 100 people across 15 states. “Before we seek to regulate, we have to understand why we are regulating,” said Representative Jay Obernolte, a California Republican who has a master’s degree in A.I. “Only when you understand that purpose can you craft a regulatory framework that achieves that purpose.”Brain drainEven so, lawmakers say they’re making strides. “Congress is taking the issue really seriously,” said Camille Carlton of the Center for Humane Technology, a nonprofit that regularly meets with lawmakers.

Brooke Walker spent that first night watching as much Australian rules football as she could. She did the same the next night, and the night after that. Walker had not grown up playing what is, depending on whom you ask, Australia’s most popular sport. As a child, she had played touch, the minimal-contact version, and rugby league. “Even when I was 14 or 15, I wouldn’t ever have seen it,” she said.

"We're all one big family in Maui, we call it 'ohana'," said Romero, a 55-year-old retired battalion chief for the island's fire department. While the fires were still burning, residents of nearby Moloka'i skimmed over the narrow strait on jet skis to unload donations on Maui beaches. Firefighters have flown in from Oahu on their own dime to help with relief efforts, Romero said. A nearby veterinary clinic had set up a stand where victims of the fires can bring ailing pets. "If we keep it bottled up inside we're not going to be able to move forward."

Inside the vast sweep of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, almost nobody was paying attention to what was happening on the field. Those fans who remained in their seats were staring up at the big screens, absorbed by a game a thousand miles away. The live sporting event playing out in front of them could not compete with the appeal of the Matildas. Over the course of the last three weeks, Australia has fallen — and fallen hard — for its women’s soccer team. Images of Matildas players beam out from billboards and television screens and the front pages of every newspaper.

New York CNN —“Swifties” heading to Los Angeles to see Taylor Swift concerts this week may find a large number of staff at their hotels on strike when they get there. Some California politicians wrote to Swift this week urging her to cancel her shows in LA, which run from Thursday through August 9. The politicians said Swift’s shows would be money makers for the hotels they are battling. Irfan Khan/Los Angeles Times/Getty ImagesThe open letter addressed to Swift said, “We are writing in support of the hotel housekeepers across Los Angeles. “In Los Angeles, hotels are doubling and tripling what they charge because you are coming… but many workers cannot afford to live close to where they work.
