SHANGHAI, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Third party retailers in China are offering discounts of as much as 10% on Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iPhone 14 Pro amid sluggish demand for smartphones. Electronics vendors JD.Com Inc (9618.HK) and Suning (002024.SZ) are currently selling the iPhone 14 Pro basic model for 7,199 yuan ($1,062), checks of JD.com's app and Suning's website showed. That is 800 yuan cheaper than the standard price on Apple's official China website. A number of other authorised Apple third party sellers are offering similar discounts on the iPhone 14 pro and Pro Max, Reuters checks of promotions on social media showed. Apple will occasionally allow partner vendors in China to offer discounts on its phones to spur demand.
CNN —In less than three months, four of the big five US tech companies have cut tens of thousands of employees combined, shattering myths about the industry’s seemingly unstoppable growth in the process. Tom Forte, a senior research analyst at DA Davison, agreed there will be staff reductions, but likely not as drastic as those at other large tech companies. How Apple avoided layoffs, so farFueled by a surge in demand for digital products earlier in the pandemic, Big Tech went on a massive hiring spree. Inflation pinched consumer and business spending, and rising interest rates evaporated the easy money tech companies had tapped into. Like other Big Tech companies, it has faced threats of antitrust action in the United States and EU.
The new lineup, which includes the 6.8-inch Galaxy S23 Ultra, 6.6-inch Galaxy S23+, and 6.1-inch Galaxy S23, look similar to last year’s models, but with new photo features, a longer lasting battery life (with faster charging speeds) and an exclusive chip. The cameras on the Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 even have a subtle new look: the contour housing has been removed, which Samsung said marks a new era of design. The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s display comes with a reduced curvature to create a larger and flatter surface intended to improve the visual experience. Galaxy S23 Ultra, which comes with Samsung’s signature S pen, will start at $1,199.99, while the Galaxy S23+ starts at $999.99 and Galaxy S23 starts at $799.99. “The Galaxy S23 family demonstrates just how hard it is to tell a new story in today’s smartphone market,” said Leo Gebbie, principal analyst at CCS Insight.

Jan 17 (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) on Tuesday unveiled MacBooks powered by its new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, in a surprise announcement weeks ahead of its traditional launch event. The Mac mini starts at $599, cheaper than the latest iPhone 14 series, and is available from Jan. 24. MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch with the latest chips start at $1,999, compared with the $1,299 price tag of a 13-inch model fitted with the M2 chip. Wall Street sees little respite to Qualcomm's smartphone gloom

Nov 3 (Reuters) - Sales at Qualcomm Inc are slowing as the smartphone market heads for its worst contraction in years, and Wall Street analysts don't expect that to turn around anytime soon. The company's dour holiday-quarter outlook underscores the rapid decline in the smartphone market, as strict COVID-19 restrictions sap demand in top market China and a global surge in inflation weighs on consumer spending elsewhere. The chipmaker now expects a low-double-digit percentage decline in handset sales volumes this year, compared with its prior forecast for a mid-single-digit percentage drop. "Qualcomm's smartphone business is more positioned in the mid-range ... and the mid-range is currently the most impacted segment in the smartphone market," said Canalys research analyst Runar Bjørhovd. Apple's earnings received a drastically different reaction from investors than its Big Tech peers Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Facebook. Shares of Apple were up about 7% Friday morning, the day after Apple reported earnings that showed 8% annual sales growth and despite misses on estimates for iPhone and services revenue. Apple looks like a "relatively safe port in the storm," as a note Friday from Credit Suisse analyst Shannon Cross says. Sacconaghi said some of Apple's Big Tech peers also seemed to have issues controlling costs, whereas Apple remains fairly lean and profitable. "Overall, our viewpoint remains consistent that Apple remains recession resilient given its products, services and wearables businesses," wrote Piper Sandler's Harsh Kumar.

SHANGHAI, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Smartphone shipments in China fell 11% year-on-year in the third quarter as the country's slowing economy took a toll on consumer demand, research firm Canalys reported on Thursday. Brands shipped a total of 70 million smartphones to sellers in the period, down from 78.9 million in same period last year. Apple currently ranks as the fourth top-selling brand in China, with a market share of 13%. The company "is not currently isolated from weak mainland China consumer demand," wrote Canalys analyst Amber Liu, adding that the company has been launching aggressive promotions on previous-generation devices in order to fend off competition from rivals. Xiaomi Corp (1810.HK), which ranked as the fifth top-selling brand, saw shipments fall 17%.
Although iPhone sales were not as strong as some analysts had targeted, they were still a record for the September quarter. Minutes before Apple reported, Amazon.com AMZN.O added to tech sector misery, predicting a holiday profit slump that sent its shares down 20%. Investors looked beyond the bleak outlook to welcome the aggressive investment cut, sending SK Hynix shares 1.7% higher in a bet the scale of the action would help control chip oversupply and prop up chip prices. SK Hynix said its operating profit fell to 1.66 trillion won ($1.16 billion) in the July-September quarter, from 4.2 trillion won a year earlier. The result was below analysts' expectations of a 1.87 trillion won profit, according to Refinitiv SmartEstimate. SK Hynix said its 2022 investment is expected to be at the "upper range of 10-20 trillion won ($7-14 billion)", meaning 2023 investments could fall below 10 trillion won. SK Hynix also warned of uncertainties involving its chip plants in China due to U.S. export restrictions on advanced chip equipment to China aimed at slowing Beijing's technological advances.

  + stars: | 2022-09-26 | by ( Associated Press | ) www.nbcnews.com   time to read: +3 min
NEW DELHI — Apple will make its iPhone 14 in India, the company said on Monday, as manufacturers shift production from China amid geopolitical tensions and pandemic restrictions that have disrupted supply chains for many industries. “The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” Apple said in a statement. India is the world’s second-largest smartphone market after China but Apple iPhone sales have struggled to capture a large share of the market against cheaper smartphones from competitors. Apple is likely to shift about 5% of its iPhone 14 production to India from later this year, raising it to 25% by 2025, according to a JP Morgan report quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency.
The other night I was showing my new Google Pixel 6a smartphone to my friend Pavlo. He had placed his finger on the part of the display where the phone scans for fingerprints, and the phone unlocked. Some people were able to unlock the Pixel 6a using fingers they hadn't registered in the device's settings. And two YouTube channels have demonstrated that people could unlock a Pixel 6a even when their fingerprints hadn't been saved in the phone. People can set up the Pixel 6a without enabling the fingerprint unlock feature, but it's still a popular alternative to a passcode.
