Oatly and Carvel said on Monday that they will partner to add oat milk-based items at the chain's ice cream stores nationwide. Carvel, a chain known for its soft serve, will add five new plant-based desserts to its menu as part of the partnership. The Oatly products will include strawberry soft serve and scooped cookies and cream and chocolate peanut butter flavors, along with cakes. As a professional baker, I don't often use boxed mixes, but I appreciate how easily they bring a cake together. I tried Duncan Hines, Pillsbury, and Betty Crocker cake mixes. The hotel — located in Hvidovre Hospital's maternity ward — allows mothers and their new baby to stay overnight for up to 48 hours after giving birth at no cost, a hospital spokesperson told Business Insider. New mothers in the UK are usually sent home between six and 24 hours after giving birth if they don't require additional care, according to NHS Inform. "Obviously, I was a bit nervous about giving birth in a different country, and I'm not fully fluent yet," she added. After giving birth, Christensen said she and her husband spent two nights and three days in a private room, which had two beds, a crib, and an en-suite shower and bathroom.

Under an elevated subway track in Queens, Victor José Hernández was whipping up the pepitos that he had perfected at a street cart in Caracas, Venezuela. Just steps away, an Ecuadorean restaurant now displays a big Venezuelan flag and offers karaoke with Venezuelan love songs. And the line for arepas and cachapas (sweet corn cakes) spills out the door of a Venezuelan cafe. Though New York City was built on immigrant neighborhoods — Chinatown, Curry Hill, Little Italy and Little Haiti, among many others — it has never had a Venezuelan neighborhood. Historically, the city’s Venezuelan population was tiny and overshadowed by much larger Hispanic groups, including Puerto Ricans and Dominicans, immigration experts said.

Many of Japan’s present-day favorite wagashi – sweets – have their origins on Kyushu. Castella (kasutera in Japanese) also makes an appearance in another popular Japanese sweet, dorayaki. Here, the castella cake is thinner and made into a pancake with a layer of sweet red bean paste inside. Europe meets Japan, Japan meets EuropeAnother European sweet that got the Japanese treatment is macarons. For him, it’s a way of honoring Japan’s small producers, in addition to introducing these flavors to the hotel’s guests.

If you make it a little bit too loose, you can always add a little bit more confectioner sugar in. It’ll fully dry after like six hours, but it’ll start to get a little bit crusty and a little bit thick. The most important thing to do and I know it feels like you don’t have to, I thought I didn’t have to when I first started working with royal icing, but it’s resting the royal icing. You’re going to decorate your cookies, and they’re going to look amazing. And then 30 minutes later, they’re going to bubble up on top of the cookies, and you don’t want that.

Sometimes those neighbors find an unexpected connection, like a love of condensed milk: milk boiled down until it’s thick enough to cling to the spoon, with sugar added to make it last longer. Yoo first tasted the cake in elementary school in Queens, on a day students were asked to bring in a dish from their heritage. He tried different brands of Thai tea and decided that a minimalist version, with just tea, vanilla and food coloring, would be best. Yoo goes so far as to leave the cake in the refrigerator for two nights, flipping it in between. The cake is finished with whipped cream, coconut flakes toasted near gold and lime zest with its bright sting.

The traditional gingerbread White House recreates the classic story by featuring a sugar cookie replica of the book along with Santa's sleigh flying above the grounds. The White House released a fact sheet and was allowing the news media to see all the trees, lights and ornaments before the first lady’s event. National Guard families, who were joining Biden as part of Joining Forces, her White House initiative to show appreciation for military families, will be among the first members of the public to see the decorations. The official White House Menorah is on display in the Cross Hall, which runs between the State Dining Room and the East Room. Seventy-two wreaths sporting red ribbons adorn the north and south exteriors of the White House.

Alternatively called rum cake, fruit cake or great cake, this dessert most likely came to the Caribbean in the 18th century with English and Irish colonizers, who substituted local rum for whiskey in their traditional Christmas fruitcake. At some point, burnt sugar syrup was added, turning the cake almost black. It has been a West Indian holiday staple, as well as the go-to wedding cake, for centuries. The recipe for black cake is so storied it has even inspired a best-selling novel that has been adapted into a series on Hulu. Black cake baking is a cottage industry in the West Indies that continues among Caribbean immigrants worldwide.

Grieving parents like me are told to gird themselves for anniversaries and holidays, for birthdays and religious events. Each holiday centered on family is now barbed. I love a holiday focused on gratitude and gathering, of food and camaraderie. I tend to cook when I’m sad or worried, and I’ve been both, a lot, of late. Living in loss is heavy; it is made all the more so by a world overflowing with grief, and parental pain.

The Los Angeles-based baker Michelle Boulos can still picture the sheet cakes she ate as a child: slathered with bright white frosting, decorated with tiny plastic balloons. But the confections she makes and sells via her Instagram account No Good Cakes are something else entirely. On one recent creation, frills of buttercream surrounded an acid green ombré surface inspired by a chemical spill. Boulos, 34, started baking the fantastical cakes out of her home in 2022 after making one for a wedding. “I got bitten by the sheet cake bug,” she says.

I was a baking-and-pastry devotee and did not yet have the experience of working among ornery savory chefs with their own idols and heroes. Ms. Lewis was as savory a chef as I had studied at that point, but I mostly focused on her pies, cakes and breads. Back then, I regretted when savory chefs commandeered the dessert menu. This is the trademark of pastry chefs of my generation. We have been brought up in both worlds, learning the rules and then adjusting to our moment and materials, as savory chefs do.
