More importantly Tuesday’s political regicide showed that the majority in the House is inoperable and that the Republican Party is unmanageable. But far from ejecting Biden from office, McCarthy himself was gone in less than a month of launching that inquiry. But a Republican speaker who needs Democratic votes is on borrowed time, although no one could have know that the end would come so soon. For the transgression of trying to fashion some, albeit erratic, governance, McCarthy joined predecessors such as GOP Speaker John Boehner and Paul Ryan in being driven out of office. McCarthy bitterly criticized Democrats for allowing eight GOP rebels to drive him out of office by not providing sufficient votes to save him.

Washington CNN —Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota is leaving his position in House Democratic leadership over his party’s support of President Joe Biden’s 2024 reelection bid. “My convictions relative to the 2024 presidential race are incongruent with the majority of my caucus, and I felt it appropriate to step aside from elected leadership,” Phillips said in a statement Sunday. Onward!”A moderate Democrat, Phillips has said for months he does not think Biden should run for reelection, and CNN previously reported he’s eyed his own White House bid. “I do intend to file a motion to vacate against Speaker McCarthy this week. But now, knowing full well he’s likely to soon face a so-called motion to vacate vote, McCarthy is taking his detractors head-on – and in increasingly combative terms. If the Senate bill advanced, McCarthy would have a harder time arguing his bill was the solution. 3 Senate Republican, opposed the Senate bill, breaking with McConnell, according to a source familiar with the matter. But that wasn’t enough to convince House Democrats to oppose the funding bill with a shutdown looming.

CNN —Rep. Matt Gaetz is planning to attempt to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy from the role this week after the House leader worked with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown on Saturday. “Speaker McCarthy made an agreement with House conservatives in January and since then he’s been in brazen, repeated material breach of that agreement,” Gaetz said Sunday. “Look, the one thing everybody has in common is that nobody trusts Kevin McCarthy. “I think Kevin McCarthy is a very weak speaker. “The only way Kevin McCarthy is speaker of the House at the end of this coming week is if Democrats bail him out.

CNN —Republicans are about to deliver on the driving purpose of their House majority – enacting Donald Trump’s retribution. Rather than try to solve the crisis, hardline House Republicans are driving the country toward a shutdown that Trump ordered up on social media, insisting it will will damage Biden, his potential general election rival. The two showdowns – and the return to power of Trump’s movement in the House – could shape the fate of the Republican House majority, which was narrowly won in last year’s midterm elections. But paradoxically, the tiny House majority – McCarthy can only lose four votes and still pass legislation on a party line – has given the most extreme GOP members more leverage. Some House Republicans are now refusing to vote for any temporary spending extension expected to come over from the Senate.

CNN —North Korea has decided “to expel” US Army Private Travis King, who crossed into the North from South Korea during a tour of the joint security area in July, state media KCNA reported on Wednesday. “The relevant organ of the DPRK decided to expel Travis King, a soldier of the U.S. Army who illegally intruded into the territory of the DPRK, under the law of the Republic,” KCNA said. King crossed the military demarcation line from South Korea into North Korea in July during a tour of the Joint Security Area inside the demilitarized zone (DMZ). King, a junior enlisted soldier assigned to US Forces Korea, had faced assault charges in South Korea and was due to return to Fort Bliss, Texas, and be removed from the military just one day before he crossed into North Korea, CNN previously reported. CNN —Donald Trump will skip another Republican presidential debate on Wednesday night because no one will punish him for not being there. Instead, gasoline prices are getting more expensive and are just pennies away from their highest level so far this year. Are rising oil prices another item to add to the list? How high do you think oil prices will go? When you adjust for inflation, oil isn’t that high right now. I think that we are going to see continued high prices for a lot of stuff, including gasoline, but I don’t think we’re gonna see an acceleration in prices.

Exorbitant CEO pay is a frustration shared by Hollywood creatives and Detroit autoworkers alike. Since 1978, the CEO compensation among America’s 300 biggest companies has gone up 1,460%, while the typical worker’s pay grew by just 18% (both adjusted for inflation), according to the Economic Policy Institute, a progressive think tank. Over the same period, CEO pay at the Big Three Detroit automakers — GM, Ford and Chrysler parent Stellantis — has jumped an average of 40%, or roughly how much of a raise striking workers are now demanding. But a company’s profit depends not only on bringing in hearty revenue, but also on keeping costs — including workers’ pay — low. CEO pay went up 40%… No one had any complaints about that, but God forbid the workers ask for their fair share,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper last week.

“China is the greatest strategic and economic threat facing the United States in the 21st century,” Pence said in his speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC. For months, China as a foreign policy adversary has been the favored topic of Republican primary candidates. Nikki Haley, who served as ambassador to the United Nations, made a point of spelling out how adversarial the relationship between the United States and China has become. “Yes, I view China as an enemy.”Haley has also used China as a way to frame Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as weak and incompetent. During the worst days of the Covid-19 pandemic, Trump dug in against criticism directed at him for calling the coronavirus the “China virus.”Trump has used China to argue he has done more than other administrations.

In addition to calling for a 36% pay raise and increased job security, union members want a 32-hour, four-day workweek with no pay cuts. Proposals to shorten the workweek have gained traction in recent years, with the flexibility of pandemic-era remote work fueling many of these calls. The accelerating use of artificial intelligence in the workplace has also pushed some workers to question the necessity of a 40-hour week. Sen. Bernie Sanders has long been a vocal proponent of a shortened workweek. “The question as a nation that we have to ask ourselves is: Who is going to benefit from this productivity?

CNN —The initiation of an impeachment investigation against a president ought to be an earthshaking moment in the nation’s history. Republicans could use an impeachment investigation of the president to fuel public suspicion over Hunter Biden’s cascading controversies. But the coming impeachment investigation represents a gamble for Republicans since it could cause a backlash in moderate districts that their majority depends on. Ian Sams, a White House spokesman for oversight and investigations, blasted the impeachment investigation as “extreme politics at its worst.”But the strain of an impeachment inquiry is hardly the way the White House would have preferred to prepare for election year. If the impeachment investigation does uncover more direct involvement of Joe Biden, condemnations of McCarthy’s action may have been premature.

Washington CNN —The three US military service secretaries went on the offensive against Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville over his ongoing hold on senior military nominations in an interview with CNN on Tuesday, saying he is aiding communist and autocratic regimes, and being used by adversaries like China against the US. “That is what the American people truly need to understand.”“It is just unprecedented to be attacking apolitical general officers and flag officers in this way. But placing a blanket hold on all general and flag officer nominees, who as apolitical officials have traditionally been exempt from the hold process, is unfair to these military leaders and their families. CNN —It turns out that there is a heavy price for trying to steal votes, defaming defenseless election workers and invading the US Capitol to try to thwart a democratic transfer of presidential power. A lawyer for the two election workers vowed on CNN to pursue accountability “to the end of the Earth” in a damages trial. While Trump claims such cases are an example of a “witch hunt,” the judicial process is grinding slowly on. Yet no democracy would last long if it failed to respond to the alleged crimes committed by Trump and his acolytes after the 2020 election. Michael Gottlieb, an attorney for the election workers, said he expected that his clients would see restitution after a trial date for damages between November and February.

Also in the Senate, California’s Dianne Feinstein, 90, has been ill and displayed apparent cognitive decline in public in recent months. But given that Biden, McConnell and Feinstein are public officials, voters are entitled to a high level of transparency. Biden, for instance, would be 86 by the time his second term ends, which represents his biggest vulnerability in the 2024 election. Remarkably, in an age where major questions divide on party lines, 69% of Democrats shared that view. Should Biden, if he wins a second term, experience a similar moment to McConnell, questions about the continuity of US leadership would reverberate around the world and offer openings for US adversaries.

The plan is to make sure Ukraine has the fighter jet it has long sought the moment its pilots complete training on the F-16. A one-page training concept from the Danish Ministry of Defense laid out a six-month plan to prepare pilots and ground crews to operate the fighter jet.
