The charges made public Tuesday against the official, Ruhollah Bazghandi, are the first to accuse an Iranian government official by name in the alleged plot to kill journalist Masih Alinejad. Prosecutors allege they were enlisted to carry out the assassination of Alinejad in the United States. Bazghandi allegedly discussed the plot to murder Alinejad with a second defendant, Haj Taher. Taher, in turn, communicated about the plot defendants Hossein Sedighi and Mohammad Forouzan, prosecutors say, including about payment for the murder. Taher, Sedighi and Forouzan also have connections to the Iranian government, prosecutors allege.

Large-cap and small-cap "core" stocks also "benefit considerably," with about 85% to 90% of their returns coming from capital gains, Armour said. However, there are instances in which passively managed funds can trade often, too, such as with so-called strategic beta funds, Armour said.

Several companies due to report next week could get a boost after their earnings results. To separate the wheat from the chaff, CNBC Pro screened FactSet for companies reporting in the coming days that are liked by analysts and also have strong earnings momentum. One bullish analyst is Morgan Stanley's Erik Woodring, who reiterated an overweight rating and $133 price target on Seagate in an Oct. 15 note to clients. Health care stocks Universal Health Services and HCA Healthcare have also seen improved sentiment, as measured by earnings estimates since the Spring. The investment bank maintained its buy rating while increasing its price target on HCA by $75 to $450, implying 8% potential upside from Friday's close.

Several University of Alabama students were charged in alleged fraternity hazing incidents after a pledge said he was shoved, stepped on, and had things thrown at him. Court documents filed Wednesday state that videos from the TV room and band room captured the alleged hazing. Molineaux and another fraternity member are alleged to have "shoved and struck one of the pledges," the filing says. The University of Alabama said hazing is strictly prohibited and an investigation led to the campus police department serving warrants against several members. "Hazing violates University policy, the Code of Student Conduct, and the law, and it is a matter that the University takes seriously," the school said in a statement.

The Justice Department, in an 18-page indictment Thursday, charged Vikash Yadav, 39, with three counts of murder-for-hire and money laundering. Federal prosecutors said Yadav was a “senior field officer” for New Delhi. Their New York target was an attorney and political activist who is a U.S. citizen of Indian origin, prosecutors said. Nijjar was also mentioned as a target by Yadav and was an associate of the activist he plotted to assassinate in New York, the Justice Department release said. Yadav was employed by India’s Cabinet secretariat, which also houses the country’s foreign intelligence wing, the Research and Analysis Wing, the Justice Department indictment said.

In 1924, historians and museum curators banded together to bury a time capsule inside the Liberty Memorial, to be opened in 100 years. In the 1920s, a group of prominent Kansas City residents formed the Liberty Memorial Association to construct a memorial dedicated to honor those who served in World War I. With the help of the Kansas City Police Department bomb and arson unit, the capsule was successfully opened with no explosions. The first of these artifacts was a tube of seeds representing the Kansas City agricultural community. The final object is a printing plate from the Kansas City Star dated to November 1, 1921.
