☆ Spirit Airlines shares plunge on bankruptcy speculation

A Wall Street Journal report Tuesday evening said a bankruptcy filing is expected to happen within weeks, as talks with Frontier Airlines to possibly buy Spirit (SAVE) broke down recently. Because of those discussions, the company said, Spirit is unable able to complete its third-quarter financial report by the prescribed time. While Spirit management tried to move ahead with the Frontier deal, its shareholders rejected the offer and Spirit ultimately agreed to the JetBlue deal instead. It argued such a combination would hurt airline passengers because it would reduce the number of inexpensive airline tickets — putting upward pressure on airfares overall. In January 2024 a federal judge agreed with DOJ’s argument and blocked the JetBlue deal.

Liberty Media announced Wednesday that it's spinning off most assets besides Formula One auto racing into a separate publicly traded company, called Liberty Live, and that CEO Greg Maffei is stepping down at year-end. After the split, Liberty Media will hold Formula One, which Liberty acquired in 2016 and later spun out as a tracking stock, and MotoGP, upon the closing of that transaction. The Liberty Media and Liberty Live split is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025, and the sale of Liberty Broadband to Charter is projected to be completed in mid-2027. "Following today's announcements at Liberty Media and Liberty Broadband, all the Liberty acquisitions completed during my tenure are now in structures where shareholders can have more direct ownership in their upside," Maffei said in a separate release. But a look deeper into the report spells trouble for a stock market — and president-elect — that are going to want the Federal Reserve to keep cutting rates throughout next year to keep fueling the bull market. However, in recent months, policymakers have focused more on the headline number, saying shelter costs, which have an outsized influence on core CPI, will come down. But core inflation has remained unusually stubborn, suggesting the Fed may have to hold rates higher than investors were previously anticipating. Core CPI showed a third straight monthly increase of 0.3%, bringing the annual rate to 3.3%.

Pitchfork announced that its annual Chicago music festival would not return in 2025. In an announcement on social media and on its website, the music publication said it made the decision after assessing the rapidly evolving "music festival landscape." “For 19 years, Pitchfork Music Festival has been a celebration of music, art, and community—a space where memories were made, voices were amplified, and the shared love of music brought us all together." Pitchfork Music Festival was founded in 2006 by the publication's founder Ryan Schreiber, ex-Pitchfork staffer Chris Kaskie and festival producer Mike Reed. It is unclear if the music festival will move forward in the other cities, but Pitchfork said in its statement that it "will continue to produce events in 2025 and beyond."

New York CNN —Chris Wallace, the veteran journalist who has anchored weekly programs on CNN and the Max streaming service, is leaving the network, he announced Monday. “Chris Wallace is one of the most respected political journalists in the news business with a unique track record across radio, print, broadcast television, cable television and streaming,” Thompson said. In this case, Wallace told The Daily Beast that he decided to leave CNN to explore new platforms like streaming or podcasting. At the time, Wallace accepted a new role as the anchor of “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” on CNN+, a streaming video product that launched in early 2022, but was shuttered weeks later when CNN’s parent company changed hands. Wallace’s talk show continued on the Max streaming service, and last year he added an eponymous Saturday morning panel discussion show.
