‘Twisters’ Takes Off at the Box Office
  + stars: | 2024-07-21 | by ( Brooks Barnes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
“Twisters” was on pace to collect roughly $80 million in the United States and Canada over the weekend. Box office analysts had predicted “Twisters” would take in about $50 million, citing prerelease surveys that track audience interest. “Twisters” cost an estimated $155 million to make, not including tens of millions in marketing costs. It was released in North America by Universal Pictures, which booked it into 4,151 theaters. You should perhaps brace for “Twisters: Even More Twisters.” Based on strong turnout in North America over the weekend, it is almost guaranteed that Universal will explore another sequel.

On Sunday, the American clinched the Open Championship to claim the second major of his career. South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence finished one shot behind Rose and Horschel in tied-fourth, with American Russell Henley a further stroke back. Yet the attacks were coming from all angles now, the most ferocious of all from playing partner Lawrence and Schauffele, two holes ahead. The steely-eyed barrage continued with two more birdies across the next three holes to open up a three shot lead. Rose and Lawrence had barely erred, each bogeying just once, but such was the relentless pace set by Schauffele.

Here are the top numbers and notes to know from the final round of the 152nd Open Championship. For the second time this season, Schauffele shot a final round 65 to win a major. Schauffele is the first player to win the PGA and Open in the same season since Rory McIlroy did it 10 years ago. With the 2024 major schedule completed, this is the first time American players have swept a major season (in a year when all four were contested) since 1982. Of the last six players to win multiple majors in the same season, four won another major within the next two years.

Warner Bros./Everett CollectionSafety and science matterFor starters, experts hope safety will be emphasized amid all the gasp-inducing (and very windy) set-pieces. “This could potentially create more dangerous conditions in the climate of storm chasing,” she said of the new movie. Smith also hopes the movie gets people excited not only about the storms themselves, but the research and science behind them. Vance was swift to name China the “biggest threat to our country,” in an interview with Fox News Monday as the RNC got underway. He’s made countering what Washington says is a security threat from China a cornerstone of his foreign policy, even as he’s worked to stabilize communications with Beijing. And Beijing – which is grappling with its own economic woes – may be preparing for more friction if Trump takes office. The substance of Biden’s China policy – in terms of sanctions, tariffs and competition – has not been that different from Trump’s, she noted, and Biden has been keener on strengthening alliances and coalitions to counter China together. “But the style of Biden’s China policy is more predictable and stabilizing.

Why MAGA Nation Embraces Donald Trump - The New York Times
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “The Deep Source of Trump’s Appeal,” by David Brooks (column, July 12):I’ve always believed that the mass of Donald Trump supporters were fundamentally just working-class Americans who, as the country’s wealth increasingly skewed to the 1 percent ever since President Ronald Reagan, found themselves running faster and faster to stay in the same place, and finally (and justifiably) started to fume about it. While Mr. Brooks doesn’t flat out say it, I take away from his article that, rather than viewing their plight as old-fashioned liberals used to — as plain and simple economic class exploitation — the white working class has been conned by demagogues like Mr. Trump into seeing it as existential, zero-sum identity politics. If Mr. Brooks’s suggestion is that religious leaders guide Americans back to some form of enlightened democratic civility, they’re going to have to drop a bit more wealth redistribution into their message to the congregation. Steven DoloffNew YorkTo the Editor:It was only a matter of time before the voters who have become MAGA nation — having been dismissed as “deplorables,” sniffed at as people who “cling to guns or religion,” and generally considered less worthy — would decide to stand up for themselves and say, “We matter, too, and as much as you do.”

The Buccaneers-owning Glazer family said Monte was a “beloved and iconic member” of the organization. “As a coach, Monte was a true innovator who got the best out of his players and helped create one of the signature defenses of the early 2000s,” the Glazer family said in a statement. Lane has been the head coach of Ole Miss since 2020 where Monte has been an analyst on the staff.

A group of Democratic officials and union leaders told journalists that Donald Trump was competitive in New York State. In 2020, Joe Biden won New York by 23 points. But that doesn’t explain why Trump was ahead even before the debate. It doesn’t explain why Trump’s candidacy is still standing after Jan. 6. It doesn’t explain why America is on the verge of turning in an authoritarian direction.

Streaming has decimated the audience for entertainment-focused cable networks, with one major exception: the Hallmark Channel. On Thursday, Hallmark said it would introduce a stand-alone streaming service. It will be called Hallmark+ and arrive in September for $8 a month. As part of the push, Hallmark is expanding into holiday-themed mini-series and reality competition shows, including one called “Finding Mr. Christmas.” (In a racy episode, at least by Hallmark standards, the “Hallmark Hunks” strip off their Christmas sweaters, albeit briefly.) Hallmark + subscribers will have on-demand access to old content; almost 300 Hallmark Christmas films have aired since 2002.

“Fly Me to the Moon” is the kind of movie that isn’t supposed to succeed in theaters anymore, at least if you listen to franchise-obsessed studio executives. And “Fly Me to the Moon” is part drama, part comedic caper, part romance, part fiction and part true story. Particularly in the summer, studios prefer to serve up mindless popcorn movies aimed at teenagers. “Fly Me to the Moon” is entertainment for thinking adults, the kind that Mike Nichols (“Working Girl”) and James L. Brooks (“Broadcast News”) made in the 1980s. So the question must be asked: How on earth did “Fly Me to the Moon” manage to score a wide release in theaters at the height of blockbuster season?

In 1994, when Sumner M. Redstone bought Paramount Pictures for about $10 billion, the equivalent of about $22 billion today, he did more than just take over a company. Perhaps more important, however, they gave their owners a precious identity as certified members of the cultural elite. Top ticket sellers in 1994 included touchstones like “The Lion King,” “Schindler’s List,” “Interview With the Vampire,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Philadelphia,” “Speed” and “Pulp Fiction.” In 1995, when “Forrest Gump” — a Paramount release — won the Oscar for best picture, more than 48 million Americans tuned in to watch. On Sunday, the Redstone family reluctantly relinquished Paramount, passing the studio to David Ellison, the tech scion behind a 14-year-old entertainment company called Skydance.

Two Democrats with a powerful network of friends are circulating a proposal for President Joe Biden to bow out of the 2024 race and launch an expedited Democratic primary to choose a new nominee before the August convention. The proposal comes as pressure builds on Biden to exit the race following his stumbling debate on June 27 against former President Donald Trump. "Overnight, Biden is hailed as a modern-day George Washington, not an octogenarian clinging to power with a 37% approval rating," the proposal reads. The next phase of the plan is a "blitz primary," where prospective Democratic candidates submit their bids and delegates of the Democratic National Convention ultimately narrow down the list to six contenders. The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the proposal.

How Steve Bannon Sees the Future - The New York Times

I was sitting in Steve Bannon’s Washington living room in 2019. By then populists had already racked up some big wins — Brexit in Britain, Trump’s victory in 2016. Bannon knew I opposed him in every particular and abhorred much of what he said, but he laid out his grand vision cheerfully, confidently. I found Bannon, currently the host of the podcast “War Room,” to be embroiled and embattled as usual. I should emphasize that I wasn’t trying to debate Bannon or rebut his beliefs; I wanted to understand how he sees the current moment.

“Inside Out 2,” starring a personified Anxiety, continued to resonate with moviegoers as the No. The dread-infused prequel “A Quiet Place: Day One” also struck a cultural nerve, arriving to stronger-than-expected ticket sales. “Inside Out 2” from Pixar was on pace to collect $55 million, for a three-week total of roughly $470 million in the United States and Canada, according to estimates by box office analysts on Saturday. The well-reviewed sequel is nearing $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales. No movie has reached that sales threshold since “Barbie,” which was released in July 2023.

CNN —India produced a brilliant performance to defeat South Africa by just seven runs in a dramatic men’s T20 World Cup final, ending a long 13-year wait for the cricket-obsessed nation since its last World Cup win. Victory sparked jubilant and emotional celebrations for India after a year of heartbreak for many of its players who lost to Australia in the finals of both the ODI Cricket World Cup and World Test Championship. India was under pressure early in its innings as some sharp South African bowling reduced it to 39-3 after five overs. South Africa continued to build steadily and almost found itself in a match-winning position when Heinrich Klaasen produced an astonishing performance in the 15th over, hitting Axar for 24 runs and racing towards a half century in just 23 balls, the fastest ever in a men’s T20 World Cup final, according to Opta. That gave India the platform it needed and it held on to take the victory by the narrowest of margins.
