SEATTLE (AP) — Alaska Airlines said Sunday it agreed to buy Hawaiian Airlines in a $1.9 billion deal, including debt, putting it on track for a potential clash with a Biden administration that has shown wariness about higher fares in the industry. The deal also includes $900 million in Hawaiian debt, which the airlines said brings the acquisition's total value to $1.9 billion. The combined airline would be based in Seattle, with Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci at its head. Both Hawaiian and Alaska are leading airlines flying between Hawaii and the U.S. mainland, which could raise concerns about lessened competition. The Alaska and Hawaii companies expect the deal to close in 12 to 18 months.

Ferrovial ends bumpy Heathrow ride on a high
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, Nov 29 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Ferrovial (FERF.AS) may be relieved to be exiting one of the world’s busiest airports. The Spanish infrastructure giant has sold its final stake in Heathrow, left over after its 2006 acquisition of BAA, which owned the hub along with Stansted and Gatwick. Regulators forced BAA to sell airports like Gatwick on competition concerns, and Ferrovial later trimmed its stake to just 25%. In 2020 Covid-19 struck, and Heathrow has since been locked in disputes with airlines like British Airways, who accuse it of overcharging. The price paid by Ardian and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund values Heathrow including debt, at 25 billion pounds, a 27% premium to its regulated asset base.

It follows the successful transatlantic crossing by a Gulfstream G600 business jet using the same fuel last week. SAF is key toward reducing those emissions, but it is costly and accounts for less than 0.1% of total global jet fuel in use today. The fuel used to power Tuesday's flight is mostly made from used cooking oil and waste animal fat mixed with a small amount of synthetic aromatic kerosene made from waste corn, Virgin Atlantic said. Yet the 2030 target looks challenging given SAF's small volumes and its high cost, right now about three to five times as much as regular jet fuel. Virgin said the engines on the flight would be drained of SAF and tested before it returns to service using regular fuel.

How European airlines have hedged against fuel price increases

Spot Northwest European jet fuel prices were at $950 per metric ton on Monday, up 4% from before the assault. They also try to hedge against value changes in the U.S. dollar, in which jet fuel is priced. JET2 (JET2.L):The British leisure travel company said in July it had 81.8% of fuel hedged over the next 12 months. Lufthansa has hedged 74% of the fuel it expects to need for 2024 at an average price of $951 per ton. WIZZ AIR (WIZZ.L):The Hungarian carrier said in June it had hedged 62% of its 2024 fuel needs and 53% of the dollars it needs for that fuel.

Analysts said, however, that Asiana's greenlighting of the cargo unit sale did not necessarily ensure smooth sailing ahead for the deal. They noted the desired valuation for the air cargo unit of some 700 billion won ($520 million) including debt, as reported by local media, was probably too high. Approving the sale was a contentious issue at Asiana amid concerns that a takeover by Korean Air would lead to the loss of many Asiana jobs. Korean Air also said it will buy 300 billion won of convertible bonds issued by Asiana, part of fresh financial support to the smaller airline. The company accounts for about a fifth of South Korea's market for overseas air cargo.

Passengers who were on British Airways’ Flight 112, from Kennedy International Airport in New York to Heathrow Airport outside London, received some good news early Thursday morning. The flight, which normally would have taken about six hours, was going to arrive 50 minutes early. Other flights traveling east over the Atlantic Ocean this week have been arriving ahead of schedule, up to an hour early in some cases, thanks to a jet stream that has been blowing in their favor. An Emirates flight on Tuesday from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates was supposed to take 13 hours 44 minutes. It landed 57 minutes early, according to FlightAware.

There’s a difference between ground speed and speed in the air (indicated air speed, essentially the speed of the plane in relation to the air around it). The jet stream explainedThe jet stream is a “core of strong winds around five to seven miles above the Earth’s surface, blowing from west to east,” as the UK’s Met Office describes it. Seven miles above the planet’s surface is equivalent to around 37,000 feet – which means that aircraft at cruising altitude slip easily into the jet stream. “This increase in the temperature gradient is amplifying the speed of the jet stream, which is driven by temperature differences. Either way, these planes are saving time and money.”The jet stream is making planes go around 200mph faster than average.

Most foreign airlines have suspended or curtailed services, leaving passengers uncertain how to leave or reach the country and consular services struggling to keep up with demand for assistance, with priority given to those with missing relatives. Israel's parliamentary finance committee said late on Tuesday it would debate authorising state guarantees for providing war risk insurance for Israeli airlines. British Airways said it would suspend flights to Tel Aviv after diverting a flight from London back to Britain shortly before it was due to reach Tel Aviv, citing security concerns. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Washington remains in talks with U.S. airlines about flights to Israel. Passengers have complained of mounting costs especially for leaving Israel, but airlines deny driving up prices.
