Fenway Park at sunrise Photo: Boston Red SoxDavid Rubenstein —business leader, Washington insider, mover, shaker and a philanthropist of considerable renown—is too smart to imagine himself an electrifying TV personality. As host of “Iconic America: Our Symbols and Stories With David Rubenstein,” he might best be described as endearingly colorless. Iconic America: Our Symbols and Stories With David Rubenstein Wednesday, 10 p.m., PBSAs explored in the eight-episode series, the subjects are not the big-ticket, big-budget Ken Burns -style thematic launch points—jazz, or the Old West or the Civil War. But each chapter does represent something about America that is under-explored and worth exploring, if only because it is so sorely taken for granted. Or Fenway Park, the focus of episode 1.
Not since the Montreal Canadiens beat the Los Angeles Kings in 1993 has the Stanley Cup been paraded through a Canadian city, an ego-deflating run of failure that has scarred a generation of fans. After winning the Stanley Cup in 1967, Maple Leafs defenceman Larry Hillman allegedly jinxed the team, saying they would not win it again until the club settled a contract dispute and paid him the $2,400 plus interest he believed he was owed. The Maple Leafs' big misfortune is playing in the same division as the Boston Bruins, who this season set NHL records for wins (65) and points (135), and the Tampa Bay Lightning, Stanley Cup finalists for the last three years. These two teams are once again hurdles that must be cleared on the way to a Stanley Cup. When the playoffs open on Monday, the Oilers will be the first of the Canadian teams to hit the ice, hosting the Los Angeles Kings in Game One of their best-of-seven series.
Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz celebrates with Brandon Lowe after hitting a home run against the Boston Red Sox in the first inning on Thursday. The Tampa Bay Rays are putting on a powerful display of what happens when one of baseball’s most potent lineups begins its season against some of the game’s weakest opponents. The Rays won their 13th consecutive game Thursday with a 9-3 win over the Boston Red Sox, tying the post-1900 record for most consecutive wins to start a regular season. The feat has been accomplished only two other times, by the 1987 Milwaukee Brewers and 1982 Atlanta Braves.
The proud Irish-American, wrapping up a nostalgic three-day visit to Ireland with a rally in the County Mayo town that his great-great-great-grandfather left for the United States in 1851, got the biggest cheer of the night with three parting words: "Mayo for Sam." Ireland's hugely popular national sports of Gaelic football draws capacity crowds of up to 82,000 for the finals each year. Mayo for Sam! Mayo for Sam!" Biden told the Irish and American flag waving crowd, raising his fist in the air.

Home base planFor the baseball fan looking to watch as many games as possible, a traditional pay TV service is still the go-to place. Discovery' s TBS, as well as Fox Corp. 's broadcast and pay TV networks, take up a decent chunk of the schedule. However, as more options are introduced, regional sports networks are getting fewer games and fans have to pay more to watch all games. With a higher rate of consumers dropping pay TV bundles and opting for streaming services, many networks have created direct-to-consumer streaming app options. Few offset the pay TV losses, but at least provide an option for fans wanting to stream.

Mandatory Credit: Scott Taetsch-USA TODAY SportsNEW YORK, March 28 (Reuters) - The New York Yankees hope to harness Aaron Judge's cult of celebrity to their advantage as the new season kicks off on Thursday following a record-breaking performance last year from the American League MVP. Judge smashed his 62nd home run in October, vaulting himself into the pantheon of Yankees greats as he broke Roger Maris' American League single-season record that had remained untouched since 1961. Try to find a couple things throughout the season that I wanted to improve on," Judge told the YES network. The Yankees kick off their season at home against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
The new rule gives the pitcher 15 seconds in between pitches with the bases empty and 20 seconds with runners on base. Another major change - outlawing the shift - will allow for more hits, making games more exciting for fans. In 2003, the average time of a nine-inning game was two hours and 46 minutes, according to Elias Sports Bureau. An MLB memo obtained by Reuters last week showed the pitch clock was already having its intended effect. The average number of violations per game also dropped from 2.03 in the first week to 1.03 by mid-March.

  + stars: | 2023-02-26 | by ( Lindsey Adler | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The new era of baseball’s pitch clock is under way. MLB’s new pitch clock had its first signature moment in the ninth inning of a spring training exhibition game between the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves on Saturday. With two outs, the bases loaded, and a full count, Atlanta batter Cal Conley was called for a third strike after the umpire determined he had not been ready and in the batter’s box with enough time left on the pitch clock. Because it was an exhibition game—in which extra innings aren’t played—the automatic strike also ended the game.

Also complicating a potential Bezos bid are reports that Snyder is opposed to selling the team to the man who owns the Washington Post. People close to Bezos have denied New York Post reports claiming that he could potentially sell the Washington Post in order to buy the Commanders.
