Diet, healthy relationships and a positive attitude are all factors that contribute to longevity, but the elixir for a long and happy life isn't complete without physical activity. It turns out that there is some value in learning more about how the longest-living people in the world move their bodies each day, which is exactly what Héctor García and Francesc Miralles did. García and Miralles got a sense of Okinawan centenarians' daily behaviors, including how they moved their bodies. "You don't need to go to the gym for an hour every day or run marathons," wrote García and Miralles. "As Japanese centenarians show us, all you need is to add movement to your day."

Living a longer life has been linked to many behaviors like healthy eating and regular exercise, but can a person's personality also play a role? "Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life," one of the most popular books about longevity, highlights the practices of "blue zones," areas with some of the longest-lived people in the world, including Japan. The book, written by Héctor García and Francesc Miralles, discusses how the things that factor into a long and healthy life aren't limited to what you do physically. Most centenarians, people at or near the age of 100, have similar personality traits that may have helped increase their lifespan, according to a 2012 study cited in the book. These are the two traits that people who live the longest seem to have in common:

Here's a list of fruits, vegetables, spices, and drinks that experts say can lead to a longer life. Others, like biotech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson, methodically prepare smoothies with compounds like creatine, spermidine, collagen peptides, and consume copious amounts of vegetables. Still, those like Johnson aren't abiding by fastidious nutrition plans simply to stay healthy — they're aiming to live longer. Breaking it down to the cellular levelVinjamoori said that it can also be helpful to think about eating for longevity from the cellular level. Insider set out to figure exactly which foods would optimize those processes, and ultimately, help you live longer.
Cities across the United States vary greatly in their environment, income, citizens' overall well-being and community. For 2023, California dominated the list of the happiest cities in America, while Fremont, California, topped the list for the second year in a row. That's according to a recent WalletHub study, which analyzed happiness-related data metrics to determine which American cities are home to the happiest residents. "The more equality there is among the residents, the happier the residents tend to be." Here are the 10 happiest cities in the U.S.:
Members of R360, a club with a $100 million net-worth minimum, are also exploring longevity. Tests revealed he had an arterial blockage and that his cardiac system was that of a 68-year-old, Fioretti told Insider. Fioretti co-chairs a group of 25 ultra-rich individuals who seek to push the limits of the human lifespan. Though the group's main focus is longevity, members have also learned more about psychedelic drugs as treatments for addiction and mental health. Some R360 members have independently invested in anti-aging endeavors, including Fioretti.
In his new book, "The Blue Zones American Kitchen: 100 Recipes to Live to 100," Dan Buettner "identified the world's longest-lived areas (blue zones) and studied the patterns and lifestyles that seem to explain their populations' longevity." Blue zones are defined by Buettner as populations with the highest rates of living to 100 – or becoming centenarians – and the highest middle-age life expectancies. "The people in the blue zones live up to a decade longer than average Americans and spend a fraction of what most [of] the rest of us do on health care," Buettner wrote. Many of these communities have more opportunities to walk from place to place and tend to stress much less than most Americans. But, after analyzing over 150 dietary surveys that capture "the daily eating habits of people in the blue zones over the past 80 years," these were the most common foods included in their diets.
[1/2] People walk outside of the Sharm El Sheikh International Convention Centre during the COP27 climate summit opening in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt November 6, 2022. Climate action "requires more people on the street, more voices, more independent research, more independent reporting, more accountability when climate obligations are not met," said Tirana Hassan, Human Rights Watch's acting Executive Director. "That's not going to happen under governments such as the Egyptian government which is excluding civil society, independent journalism and academia," she told a meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh this week. Despite those criticisms some delegates argued that there was a benefit to holding the summit in Sharm el-Sheikh to shine a light briefly on Egypt's record. "This is a huge opportunity," Egyptian journalist and human rights advocate Hossam Bahgat said.
Around 35,000 delegates from nearly 200 countries are expected to convene on the southern tip of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula to discuss collective action on how to tackle the climate emergency. It may, perhaps, also become known for the growing list of infrastructure woes at this year's flagship U.N. climate summit. A sewage pipe on Wednesday evening appeared to burst near the exit of the Blue Zone, a U.N.-managed space where negotiations are held. It's not for the faint-hearted," Lena Thiede, an environmental and climate policy expert at German investment firm Planet A Ventures, told CNBC from the Blue Zone on Thursday.
People residing in these Blue Zones are outliving us because they have figured out what others have not, according to Buettner. In 2009, he piloted his first "Blue Zones Project" in Albert Lea, Minnesota. The goal was to reverse-engineer it into a Midwestern Blue Zone. Playa Santa Teresa, on the Nicoya peninsula in Costa Rica, is in one of Buettner's Blue Zones.
