LVMH may have to settle for a more humdrum future

The disappointing results knocked 6% off LVMH stock on Wednesday and dragged down rivals Richemont (CFR.S) and Kering (PRTP.PA) which also fell about 3%. That may compound investor worries about an overall slowdown of the company that’s behind Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior (DIOR.PA). And China’s economic slowdown and a possible U.S. recession make their future even more uncertain. LVMH is trading at 20 times its expected 2023 earnings after Wednesday's fall. If the less exuberant times keep rolling, LVMH may find itself settling for an even less luxurious valuation.

REUTERS/Fabrizio Bensch/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Oct 10 (Reuters) - German premium footwear maker Birkenstock Holding (BIRK.N) priced its U.S. initial public offering (IPO) at the middle of its indicated price range at $46 per share, the company said on Tuesday. While shares of Arm and Klaviyo still trade above their IPO price, Instacart's stock is now worth less than its IPO value. Birkenstock was founded in 1774 in the German village of Langen-Bergheim by Johannes Birkenstock and his younger brother Johann Adam Birkenstock, who were both shoemakers. After the IPO, L Catterton will hold an 82.8% stake in Birkenstock and control a majority of the combined voting power of its outstanding shares. Birkenstock would end up raising $1.58 billion at the top of the range. While shares of Arm and Klaviyo still trade above their IPO price, Instacart's stock is now worth less than its IPO value. This helps explain why Birkenstock is not inclined to raise its IPO price range despite the strong initial investor demand. To leave less to chance, Birkenstock launched the roadshow for its IPO last week with some investors lined up. Billionaire LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault has hit back at allegations of money laundering, after the Paris prosecutor's office confirmed it is investigating financial transactions between Arnault and Russian oligarch Nikolai Sarkisov. In a statement, Arnault's attorney, Jacqueline Laffont, said the allegations were "absurd and unfounded." The investigation, seemingly under way, will demonstrate these facts," she said in an emailed statement over the weekend. "Furthermore, who could seriously imagine that Bernard Arnault, who has developed over the past 40 years the leading French and European company, would pursue money laundering to expand a hotel? I believe the senseless nature of these allegations will be recognized by all."

CNN has contacted Tracfin and Sarkisov for comment. PARIS, Sept 30 (Reuters) - A financial transaction under investigation in France involving LVMH owner Bernard Arnault was carried out in full respect of the law, his lawyer said on Saturday. The Paris public prosecutor's office confirmed on Friday that it is investigating financial transactions involving Arnault and Russian businessman Nikolai Sarkisov. In France, a prelimary investigation does not necessarily imply wrongdoing by those concerned, for whom the presumption of innocence applies. An unidentified Tracfin official told Le Monde the transactions involving Arnault and Sarkisov, who both acted through a complex web of legal entities, could have been aimed at concealing the origins of the funds used.
