“One of the themes we’ve heard from Chief Justice Roberts and others is essentially this message of: Just trust us. In recent months, Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett have publicly supported the adoption of an ethics code. The most glaring defect of the new code is its complete lack of any enforcement power. And yet the absence of any discipline or enforcement was the central flaw that led to calls for an ethics code in the first place. “A justice should not allow family, social, political, financial or other relationships to influence official conduct or judgment.” Well, sure.

In preparing financial statements, also known as compilations, accountants need only documentation used to determine the value of assets, like Trump’s skyscrapers, golf courses and other properties. The firm cut ties with Trump last year and said his financial statements “should no longer be relied upon” after James raised concerns about their accuracy. James, a Democrat, alleges Trump, his company and top executives exaggerated his wealth by billions of dollars on the financial statements by inflating property values. On the stand Tuesday, Flemmons echoed Trump’s longstanding assertion that disclaimers on the financial statements insulated him from liability for discrepancies or misstatements. Trump has argued that, if anything, his financial statements undervalued how much his properties were worth.

Senator Joe Manchin III said he decided to forgo re-election because he’d accomplished all his goals. But for the Democrats he’s leaving behind in Washington, the work to hold the party’s already slim Senate majority is just beginning. The state has become so conservative that only Wyoming delivered a wider Republican margin in the 2020 presidential race. “This is a huge impact,” Ward Baker, a former executive director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the group that oversees Senate races. “Manchin not running will save Republicans a ton of money — and it takes a seat off the board early.”

For months, some of the Republican Party’s top donors have dreamed of a dramatic late entrance into the presidential race by Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia, envisioning an improbable scenario in which the fleece-vested former financier rips control of the party away from Donald J. Trump. Mr. Youngkin had been viewed by some Republicans as the key to unlocking their political problems in the suburbs. Mr. Youngkin’s blueprint, the thinking went, could help the Republican Party halt a series of stinging defeats since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Mr. Youngkin encouraged his party to lean into the fight, spending heavily on a television ad that explained the Republican plan to ban abortion in Virginia after 15 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the woman.

MY NAME IS BARBRA, by Barbra StreisandHello, enormous. Of course Barbra Streisand’s memoir, 10 years in the making if you don’t count the chapter she scribbled in longhand in the 1990s and then lost, was going to approach “Power Broker” proportions. For one thing, she is — fits of insecurity notwithstanding — a bona fide power broker: tearing down barriers to and between Broadway, Hollywood, the recording industry and Washington, D.C., like Robert Moses on a demolition bender. For another, as Streisand writes in “My Name Is Barbra,” a 970-page victory lap past all who ever doubted, diminished or dissed her, with lingering high fives for the many supporters, she does tend to agonize over the editing process. Since the trial began in late September, Trump has been fined twice by Judge Arthur Engoron for breaking a gag order that bars him from making public comments about the judge’s staff, stormed out of the courtroom and been made to watch as two of his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, testified this week. His daughter Ivanka Trump is slated to testify on Tuesday. Both sons held the title of executive vice president after their father was elected president. Eric Trump, who maintained more direct involvement in the company, provided more detailed testimony and was at times chippy in his responses to prosecutors who sought to tease out his specific role. During testimony on Friday, he acknowledged he was aware of the Trump Organization's statements of financial condition as far back as 2013 after repeatedly denying knowledge of them.

But in recent quarters, we have witnessed a dramatic shift higher in interest rates, a move that investors should not fear but embrace. In addition to the rise in nominal interest rates, we have also experienced a similar increase in real interest rates (rates adjusted for inflation). Granted, the journey to higher yields has been painful to bond investors. When calculating fixed-income returns for most bonds, there are two components: price return and income return. As an example, the Bloomberg Aggregate Bond Index posted a price return of -15.3% and an income return of +2.3%.

A man accused of beating a 66-year-old Sikh man to death after a minor car crash this month was motivated by “rage inflamed by hate,” the Queens district attorney said on Tuesday while announcing that the killing was now being prosecuted as a hate crime. The man charged in the killing, Gilbert Augustin, repeatedly called the victim, Jasmer Singh, who was wearing a turban as part of his faith, “turban man” before attacking him brutally, the district attorney, Melinda Katz, said in a statement. The killing of Mr. Singh occurred amid what New York police officials have described as a wave of reported hate crimes in the city since the war between Israel and Hamas began. How to calculate I bond ratesThe Treasury adjusts I bond rates every May and November, and there are two parts to I bond yields: a variable and fixed portion. The variable rate moves every six months based on inflation, and the Treasury can change the fixed rate every six months, but that doesn't always happen. The variable rate resets every six months starting on the investor's I bond purchase date, not when the Treasury announces new rates. Currently, the variable rate is 3.94% and the fixed rate is 1.30%, for a rounded combined yield of 5.27% on I bonds purchased between Nov. 1 and April 30. However, the headline rate may be different than what you receive because the fixed rate stays the same for the life of your bond.

One of Donald J. Trump’s new comedic bits at his rallies features him impersonating the current commander in chief with an over-the-top caricature mocking President Biden’s age. With droopy eyelids and mouth agape, Mr. Trump stammers and mumbles. A burst of laughter and applause erupts from the crowd as he feigns confusion by turning and pointing to invisible supporters, as if he does not realize his back is to them. Mr. Trump has had a string of unforced gaffes, garble and general disjointedness that go beyond his usual discursive nature, and that his Republican rivals are pointing to as signs of his declining performance. In a pretrial court filing, James’ office estimated that Trump exaggerated his wealth by as much as $3.6 billion. They've also called accountants Donald Bender and Camron Harris, whose firms Trump hired to prepare his financial statements. A retired Deutsche Bank official testified the financial statements were key to Trump securing hundreds of millions of dollars in loans. Weisselberg acknowledged that information in Trump’s financial statements wasn’t always accurate, such as valuing his penthouse based on the wrong size. In a decision last month, Engoron resolved the lawsuit's top claim, ruling that Trump committed years of fraud by inflating the value of assets in his financial statements.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump will back in court next week for his New York civil fraud trial, a person familiar with the former president’s plans told The Associated Press on Thursday, setting up a potential face-to-face showdown with fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen, who is expected to testify. Trump is expected to attend the non-jury trial Tuesday through Thursday next week, according to the person who confirmed the plans, which were first reported by news website The Messenger. Outside, Trump decried the civil trial a “sham,” a “scam,” and “a continuation of the single greatest witch hunt of all time.” His campaign, meanwhile, attempted to capitalize with fundraising appeals tied to the proceedings. Trump isn’t required to be in court for the civil trial until he is called to testify in the few weeks. The civil trial, which doesn't have a jury because one is not required under the law, concerns allegations of conspiracy, insurance fraud and falsifying business records.

NEW YORK (AP) — An accountant who prepared Donald Trump's financial statements was back on the witness stand for a fourth day Thursday in the New York civil fraud trial examining whether the former president exaggerated his wealth. The business fraud trial stems from New York Attorney General Letitia James' lawsuit alleging that Trump and his business ginned up financial statements that vastly overvalued Trump Tower, Mar-a-Lago and other assets. James is seeking $250 million in penalties and a ban on Trump doing business in New York. The witnesses so far have been two accountants who worked on the financial statements, which went to banks, insurers and others. The defense has been trying to show that if there were problems with the financial statements, the flubs were accountant Donald Bender's fault.
