Millions of Australians were left without a phone or internet connection on Wednesday after the country’s second-largest telecommunications provider experienced an unexplained nationwide outage. “It is highly unlikely (that the problem started within software in Optus networks), our systems are actually very stable … This is a very, very rare occurrence,” she said. It has wide ramifications across mobile, fixed, and broadband services for Optus customers,” Rowland told reporters. Ramsay Health Care, which owns 70 hospitals and clinics in Australia, its phone services were impacted. “We encourage any customers who need to contact emergency services to use a mobile line to call 000,” Optus said in a statement.

On Wednesday, the company started selling the Microsoft 365 Copilot artificial intelligence add-on for its Office app subscriptions targeting businesses. Wong said Gartner encourages organizations to experiment with generative AI, which can create synthetic images and text with just a few words of human input. "I think getting to 20% will be reasonable within two to three years for technologies like Copilot, because there's going to be early adopters, and there's going to be fast followers," he said. Microsoft acknowledges on its website that "the responses that generative AI produces aren't guaranteed to be 100% factual." Microsoft says prompts and responses in Copilot aren't used to train language models and adhere to the company's privacy standards.

MUNICH, Germany, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich's German Cup second round game at third-tier Saarbruecken on Wednesday hangs in the balance due to the hosts' pitch conditions with a decision expected on matchday, Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said on Tuesday. Heavy rain in previous days has made the pitch almost unplayable with the German Football Association (DFB) set to inspect it two more times before a decision is taken. That was always the plan and has nothing to do with the pitch," Tuchel told a press conference. "If the DFB decides tomorrow that we will play I hope that it will be under normal conditions," Tuchel said. He knows how to play with an economy and he knows how to play a lot," Tuchel said of Kane, who scored a hat-trick in their 8-0 win over Darmstadt on Saturday.

A Brazilian carbon market would be an important addition to an expanding network of cap-and-trade systems around the world. Brazilian agricultural producers and miners hope the carbon market will help overcome headwinds in developed markets where consumers often associate them with deforestation. Exporters of manufactured goods using Brazilian grains, meat, iron-ore and other raw materials could also get a boost if carbon regulation improves the country’s environmental credentials, according to Brazilian business executives. Sen. Tereza Cristina —a former agriculture and livestock minister—defended the decision to exclude the sector from carbon regulation. “The farm sector isn’t ready for the regulated carbon market,” she said.

BERLIN, Oct 26 (Reuters) - There is more at stake for Bayern Munich keeper Manuel Neuer when he makes his possible return to action in the Bundesliga on Saturday against Darmstadt 98 almost a year after injury. He did not travel to Bayern's Champions League game against Galatasaray in Istanbul on Tuesday to continue training while a rumoured return in the league last week did not materialise. "We have to wait and see," Bayern's Tuchel said on Tuesday when asked whether Neuer will return this week. A Bayern comeback for Neuer would mean that veteran keeper Sven Ulreich, who has been outstanding in his absence, will quickly slip back into his usual reserve role. Victory over visiting Darmstadt, in 12th place, could move Bayern provisionally into top spot, with Leverkusen, also unbeaten, in action against Freiburg on Sunday.

Quarterly sales came in at 14.3 billion Swiss francs ($15.9 billion), the Swiss drugs and diagnostics maker said in a statement, broadly in line with analyst estimates. A high-dose version of Eylea for less frequent injections won U.S. approval in August, creating doubt among analysts that a string of forecast-beating Vabysmo sales can continue. CEO Thomas Schinecker - who is keen to restore Roche's drug development record - said he was looking to acquire drug assets in all stages of development but that there was no rush. He pointed to 10% sales growth during the quarter, excluding currency headwinds and the slump in COVID sales. However, it predicted a less pronounced decline in sales of COVID-19 products of about 4.5 billion Swiss francs, from a previous estimate of a drop of 5 billion francs.

CHICAGO, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Arkansas ordered Syngenta to sell 160 acres (65 hectares) of farmland in the U.S. state within two years on Tuesday because the company is Chinese-owned, drawing a sharp rebuke from the global seeds producer. U.S. farm groups and lawmakers are increasingly scrutinizing foreign land ownership due to concerns about national security. "Our people in Arkansas are Americans led by Americans who care deeply about serving Arkansas farmers," Das said. The state also fined Syngenta $280,000 for failure to report foreign ownership in a timely manner. "All Syngenta land holdings have been examined by the U.S. government, through two administrations, as Syngenta was transitioning to ChemChina ownership," Das said.

A few compounds picked by AI are now in development, but those bets will take years to play out. Reuters interviews with more than a dozen pharmaceutical company executives, drug regulators, public health experts and AI firms show, however, that the technology is playing a sizeable and growing role in human drug trials. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it had received about 300 applications that incorporate AI or machine learning in drug development from 2016 through 2022. Without AI, Bayer said it would have spent millions more, and taken up to nine months longer to recruit volunteers. Finding real-world patients by mining electronic patient data can be done manually, but using AI speeds up the process dramatically.

European value stocks are doing better than growth stocks right now, according to Citi analysts. Citi defined "quality" value stocks as those in the top fifth and fourth quintiles for three characteristics: value, low risk and quality. Citi said investors "have not been particularly risk-averse," as risky value stocks are up 8.6%, while quality value stocks are down 0.3% in the year to date. Nevertheless, the bank noted that investors appear to have been more cautious since the start of August, as quality value stocks are up 4.6%, while risky value stocks are down 0.6%. 'Risky value' stocks For this screen, Citi looked for stocks that scored in the seventh or above decile for value and those in the fifth or below decile for "value low risk" and quality.

MUNICH, Germany, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Bayer Leverkusen scored a stoppage time penalty through Exequiel Palacios to rescue a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich on Friday and snap their winning start. The match lived up to its billing and the result left Bayern and Leverkusen level on 10 points at the top of the standings. Palacios thundered in his spot kick after Alphonso Davies had brought down Jonas Hofmann. But it was Bayern who scored with Tel weaving past the Leverkusen defence to set up Goretzka. FRANKFURT, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Bayer's (BAYGn.DE) new CEO plans to cut management jobs to speed up decision-making as a first step to overhaul the embattled German industrial group, which is facing investor pressure to break up, three people familiar with the matter said. But the new CEO will likely have only a short respite period to come up with concrete strategic proposals. Anderson has been tasked with reviving Bayer's share price, which has underperformed rivals, weighed down by the lingering costs of U.S. weedkiller litigation. Anderson said last month he was not ruling out any options as part of his review of the company's strategy and structure, saying he was "leaving no stone unturned". He added he would provide an initial update in the coming months and detailed plans in early 2024.

Still, there are concerns about who owns the farm data and how it's being used. Chemeres said that he saw agriculture tech companies bombard farmers with innovations to mitigate this labor shortage. He believes the future of agriculture tech will be "almost surgical," he said, especially as AI comes into the field and becomes more sophisticated. The advisers also told the FDA that studying phenylephrine at higher doses was not an option because it can push blood pressure to dangerous levels. This time, the 16 members of the FDA panel unanimously agreed that current evidence doesn't show a benefit for the drug. Additionally, three larger, rigorously conducted studies published since 2016 showed no difference between phenylephrine medications and placebos for relieving congestion. Those studies were conducted by Merck and Johnson & Johnson and enrolled hundreds of patients. Like many other over-the-counter ingredients, phenylephrine was essentially grandfathered into use during a sweeping FDA review begun in the 1972.
