Hong Kong CNN —For the first time ever, Tesla cars have been placed on a local Chinese government’s purchase list, according to state-owned media outlet Paper.cn. Tesla is the only foreign-owned EV car brand on the purchase catalog published by the government of Jiangsu province in eastern China. On the government’s purchase catalog, Tesla’s Shanghai-made Model Y was listed at 249,900 yuan ($34,377). Tesla cars had previously been barred from entering some government and military complexes in China due to spying and data security concerns. Those restrictions were lifted in April, when a top auto association announced that Tesla’s cars had passed China’s data security requirements.

China's BYD opens its first electric vehicle (EV) factory in Southeast Asia, a fast-growing regional EV market, in Rayong, Thailand, July 4, 2024. China's BYD opened an electric vehicle plant in Thailand on Thursday, the automaker's first factory in Southeast Asia, a fast-growing regional EV market where it has become the dominant player. "Thailand has a clear EV vision and is entering a new era of auto manufacturing," BYD CEO and President Wang Chuanfu said at the opening ceremony. The BYD plant is part of a wave of investment worth more than $1.44 billion from Chinese EV makers who are setting up factories in Thailand, helped by government subsidies and tax incentives. Other EV rivals in the local market include Great Wall Motor, which also has a production facility in Thailand, and U.S. automaker Tesla.

The EU's decision comes at a time when Chinese automakers have been aggressively expanding into Europe with competitively priced offerings, posing a threat to the region's top automakers, many of which have lagged behind in EVs. It did not comment on whether it would end up raising prices as a result of the levies. When the EU first announced the tariffs last month, Tesla said it will likely increase the Europe prices of its Model 3 vehicle. The EU has yet to say what specific level of tariffs Tesla will face, but noted last month that the U.S. automaker "may receive an individually calculated duty rate." watch nowChinese and EU officials have held several rounds of meetings to discuss the tariffs, with Beijing in June criticizing the EU's imposition of tariffs as a "protectionist act."

New York CNN —Tesla sales fell for the second straight quarter. In the fourth quarter BYD briefly passed Tesla in global EV sales. But the better-than-expected Tesla sales were enough to lift shares of Tesla (TSLA) by more than 9% in midday trading. The strong EV sales were balanced by a slight drop - about 0.3% - in sales of traditional gasoline powered cars. Toyota’s US EV sales soared even more, rising 301% to 11,600.

That's slightly more than Nio 's 87,426 deliveries for the first six months of 2024, although Nio continued to recover from sluggish performance earlier in the year with a record 21,209 deliveries in June. BEIJING — Chinese electric car company Zeekr said Monday it delivered a record number of vehicles in June, making its deliveries for the first half of the year the largest among U.S.-listed Chinese companies only selling pure electric cars. Plug-in hybrid cars accounted for a slightly greater share than battery electric vehicles, and saw faster growth at 39.5% versus 17.7% for battery-only cars. Car companies need to improve the battery charging process, Wan Gang, the man credited with spearheading China's electric car strategy, said at a conference last week. As part of efforts to boost consumption, China this year has launched a trade-in policy to incentivize new energy vehicle sales.

Tesla shares are likely to take a hit in the third quarter as the company's strategy of boosting sales by slashing prices loses steam, according to Wells Fargo. TSLA YTD line Tesla Wells Fargo has an underweight investment opinion on Tesla and a price target of $120 per share, implying nearly 40% downside from Friday's close of $197.88. has plateaued, and Tesla faces aggressive competition in China from companies such as BYD, leaving "little immediate levers to pull to increase volumes," the Wells Fargo analysts said. The research team is also worried about the demand and profit margins for Tesla's smaller, mass-market Model 2. "We are cautious on margins given likelihood of more price cuts & lower volumes," the Wells analysts said.

Sixteen years ago, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway unveiled a $230 million investment in Chinese electric vehicle startup BYD , sparking questions about the conglomerate's unusual foray into early-stage technology. Lately, Berkshire has been selling down the position, ringing the register after earning billions of dollars during its hyper-growth phase. Berkshire trimmed its BYD stake to 5.99% as of June 19 from 7% just a few days earlier , according to a Hong Kong Stock Exchange filing . It has since become the top car brand in China, as well as a major producer of EV batteries. "From a standing start at zero and with very little capital, he rapidly was able to create the best-selling single model in China," Munger said.

Morgan Stanley has resumed coverage of Hong Kong-listed Geely with an overweight rating on expectations the Chinese automaker can weather macro and industry uncertainties. "We see Geely as a beneficiary of market consolidation," Morgan Stanley Asia equity analyst Tim Hsiao and a team said in a June 25 report that resumed coverage of the stock. Hangzhou-based Geely entered China's auto industry in 1997 and is known for acquiring Volvo in 2010. But the company raised the share of its new energy vehicles to 32% so far this year, higher than peers such as Great Wall Motor, for which the share is 23%, the Morgan Stanley analysts pointed out on Tuesday. The Morgan Stanley analysts on Tuesday set a price target of HK$11.20 ($1.43), about 27% above where shares closed Friday.

Ford Motor expects to introduce a $30,000 all-electric vehicle that will be profitable in roughly two and a half years, CEO Jim Farley said Friday during the Aspen Ideas Festival. "You have to make a radical change as an [automaker] to get to a profitable EV. Ford's EV unit lost $1.32 billion during the first quarter of this year on 10,000 vehicles wholesaled. Farley said it's crucial for Ford to make profitable EVs in the next five years, as Chinese automakers continue to expand globally. Much of the growth, from a forecast 21% market share this year, is expected to come outside of China. The rapid expansion of Chinese automakers is a growing concern for legacy automakers and politicians globally. In North America, Chinese automakers are forecast to only achieve a 3% market share, largely in Mexico, where one in five vehicles are expected to be Chinese brands by 2030. In most other major regions of the world, AlixPartners reports that the share of Chinese automakers is expected to exponentially grow. Chinese brands in China also are expected to grow from 59% to 72% in market share, according to AlixPartners.

DALIAN, China — Cisco is "very optimistic" about its growing business with Chinese electric car companies as they expand overseas, the company's Greater China head told CNBC on Tuesday. The EV segment is the U.S. tech giant's second-largest for the region — Cisco generates most of its revenue in Greater China from manufacturing companies, and within that, electric cars form the largest category, said Ming Wong, vice president and CEO of Cisco Greater China. Chinese EV-makers have ramped up their global expansion in the last year as domestic competition intensified. However, trade tensions have escalated, with the U.S. and likely the European Union, increasing tariffs on imports of Chinese electric cars. "At least as of now, we don't hear anything from the [EV] customers saying that, 'Oh, because of this, we need to stop investing, or we need to slow down,'" he added.

Chinese carmakers accounted for 88% of the EV market in Brazil and 70% in Thailand in Q1, according to ABI Research figures. The EV markets in many of these countries are small now, but they're growing rapidly. This is because Chinese automakers are known for their ability to build electric cars for less than their foreign competitors. Australian Senator and shadow cyber-security minister James Paterson said earlier this year that Chinese EVs pose a growing cybersecurity risk. "India is still a little wary of the Chinese market," said Dylan Khoo, an analyst at ABI Research.

Future Publishing | Future Publishing | Getty ImagesBEIJING — China spent $230.8 billion over more than a decade to develop its electric car industry, according to analysis published Thursday by the U.S.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. Last month, the U.S. announced it was raising duties on imports of Chinese electric vehicles to 100%. There are some exceptions, but in general Western automakers and governments have dilly dallied and not been aggressive enough. But he also noted that the U.S. has not created conditions that are as attractive as China's for developing its own electric car industry. Read previewChina has spent at least $230 billion on government support to electric vehicle makers such as BYD since 2009, according to a new study from the Centre for Strategic & International Studies think tank. Government subsidies have been a central pillar of China's quest to become an EV powerhouse over the past decade. AdvertisementChina is now the world's largest electric vehicle market, accounting for 60% of global EV sales in 2023, per the IEA — well above rivals like the US and Japan. EV makers in China can get government support through several routes, including infrastructure subsidies, tax exemptions, and buyer rebates. Massive government support has cultivated intense competition among China's legion of EV companies, which in turn has led to low prices.

DETROIT – The traditional Detroit automakers – General Motors , Ford Motor and Stellantis – should exit the Chinese market "as soon as they possibly can," Bank of America's top automotive analyst said Tuesday. Murphy, who has previously asked General Motors about exiting the market, said the "D3" automakers need to focus on their core products and more profitable regions. It's a prospect that would have been unthinkable for the automakers, specifically GM, just a few years ago, but the rise of local Chinese automakers such as BYD and Geely has put growing pressure on the companies. While the Detroit automakers need to rethink the way their doing business in China, Murphy said it's slightly different for U.S. electric vehicle leader Tesla . Murphy said Tesla, like Chinese companies, has a roughly $17,000 cost advantage in EV components compared to the traditional Detroit automakers to assist it in the Chinese market, allowing it to have "more room to run."

Hong Kong CNN —Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway has further cut its large stake in BYD, which vies with Tesla as the world’s largest electric car (EV) maker, as global trade tensions escalate over Chinese EVs. The sale was valued at 310.5 million Hong Kong dollars ($40 million). BYD shares had closed at a record high in June of that year. In 2008, Berkshire spent $230 million in buying BYD shares at an average of HK$8 ($1.02) apiece. Warren Buffett speaks during the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders Meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 4, 2024. Berkshire Hathaway, an early investor in BYD thanks to the late Charlie Munger, continued to trim its massive stake in China's biggest electric vehicle maker. Warren Buffett's conglomerate has sold an additional 1.3 million Hong Kong-listed shares of BYD for $39.8 million, according to a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The conglomerate first bought about 225 million shares of Shenzhen-based BYD in 2008 for about $230 million. The bet turned out to be extremely lucrative as the EV market saw explosive growth in China and elsewhere.
