In a complaint Sept. 18, the U.S. claimed civil damages totaling $103,078,056 under the Rivers and Harbors Act, the Oil Pollution Act and general maritime law, according to the release. There are still dozens of outstanding civil claims, including one from the state of Maryland, seeking damages from the owners of the Dali. According to the Justice Department, Thursday's settlement does not include damages to rebuild the bridge because Maryland built, owned, maintained and operated it. The Dali smashed into the Key Bridge early March 26 after it left the Port of Baltimore en route to Sri Lanka. The ship lost power, regained power, then lost power again before it hit the bridge, causing it to collapse into the Fort McHenry Channel.

CEO Kelly Ortberg has vowed to turn around the company and laid out a four-point plan. CEO Kelly Ortberg vowed to "return Boeing to its former legacy" and said the company would focus on changing its culture. However, restoring the traditional defined-benefit pension plan — replaced with a 401(k) in 2014 negotiations — has been a key issue for many on the picket lines. Bank of America analysts estimated that restoring this pension plan would cost up to $400 million annually. Boeing's production has been limited as it faces supply-chain constraints and renewed scrutiny from regulators in the wake of January's Alaska Airlines blowout.

And now scientists have confirmed a new one: Diverse firefly species lit up the night during the late Mesozoic. The discovery comes from a fossil of an ancient firefly species that was initially discovered in 2016, trapped in 99 million-year-old Burmese amber from northern Myanmar. The beetle is only the second firefly species from the Mesozoic to be identified. Because only one other Cretaceous firefly species has been identified, “this new species can be used to revisit the (July 2022 study) to better date the evolution of fireflies given the new evidence,” he added. CNN —The Justice Department has reached a settlement for more than $100 million with the two corporations that owned and operated the container ship that destroyed Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March. The payment stemming from Thursday’s settlement will go to the US Treasury and to the budgets of several federal agencies directly affected by the crash or involved in the response, the Justice Department said Thursday. It will not cover any damages for the reconstruction of the bridge, the department said. In its filing last month, the Justice Department said that the “tragedy was entirely avoidable,” pointing to alleged failures in the ship’s infrastructure. Prosecutors wrote that, instead of fixing longstanding problems with their electrical transformer, the companies “jury-rigged their ship” with makeshift braces that repeatedly broke.

Meanwhile, companies like Harley-Davidson, Molson Coors, Lowe's, and John Deere have scaled back or dropped their DEI programs. But amid the backlash, some organizations are refining their DEI strategies, focusing on belonging, inclusion, and fair pay alongside other diversity metrics. Companies like Ancestry, Mitre, and HLW are using data to evaluate employee experiences while addressing equity through cultural programs, training, and compensation reviews. "We're seeing more reframing of DEI efforts and a stronger emphasis on systematically linking DEI to a business case." The stakes are high for psilocybin clinical trials — there’s a pressing need for a more effective medical solution in the fight against depression, especially treatment-resistant depression. “People begin to feel, understand and appreciate that their brain can change and they can escape from their depression,” Nutt said. “For that reason alone, this research matters.”At six weeks, the study found no significant difference in depression scores between the antidepressant and psilocybin groups. In fact, Madras said, adverse effects are such a concern that researchers in psychedelic clinical trials often actively recruit people who have successfully taken psychedelics in the past. In a study using psilocybin for alcohol substance abuse, for example, some 95% of those involved correctly guessed whether they were taking psilocybin or the placebo.

The prosecution also plans to call witnesses who said they saw Allen at the trail. Allen, 52, dressed in a long-sleeve button-down shirt and khakis, shook his head at times during McLeland's opening statement. One key piece of evidence — video retrieved from Libby's cellphone that was found underneath Abby's body — showed the apparent suspect. As the trial opened this week, the defense lawyers withdrew a request for jurors to be able to visit the crime scene, which prosecutors had opposed. Defense lawyers, however, may still get to argue during the trial why certain evidence is admissible.

Solid-state batteries have long been billed as the "holy grail" of sustainable driving. As the name suggests, solid-state batteries contain a solid electrolyte, made from materials such as ceramics. Yale’s gecko-inspired robot’s ability to reconfigure itself creates a soft robot that’s even more adaptable. Tan, who works on materials for soft electronics and soft robotics, says that Yale’s robot is the first self-amputating, self-reconfigurable soft robot she’s seen. “What if a soft robot is just minding its own business walking in the wild, but then some part of it is trapped under a rock?” he questioned. “How does the rest of the robot continue on to finish its mission?”Three soft robot modules join to cross a gap that’s too wide for one to bridge on its own. “We can now adapt soft robots … after the robot is underway for its tasks,” he said.
