The rise of BYD and other Chinese automakers led Tesla CEO Elon Musk in January to warn that Chinese automakers will "demolish" global rivals without trade barriers. Caresoft, an engineering benchmarking and consulting firm, has already torn down one China-built BYD Seagull and is preparing to do another. Michael Wayland / CNBCThe consulting firm tore apart the BYD Seagull piece by piece to benchmark the small EV against vehicles from other startups and traditional automakers. Its initial study of the BYD Seagull found it to be efficiently and simplistically designed, engineered and executed, but with unexpected quality and anticipated reliability. Growing concernsBYD's rise comes at a precarious time for global auto industry dynamics.

Ten nonprofits serving young people in Detroit will get an unusual, lasting gift as part of a campaign started by Lisa Ford and her husband, Bill Ford, the executive chairman of Ford Motor Co. Endowments are funds a nonprofit can invest and the annual financial returns from those investments can go into the nonprofit’s budget. Detroit-area nonprofits may apply in June, when Michigan Central Station will reopen, and ten selected organizations will each receive $500,000 to launch an endowment. The Children's Foundation will manage the nonprofits’ endowments and offer them guidance and technical support over two years. Lisa Ford said the idea for creating endowments for youth nonprofits evolved out of their commitment to supporting a robust and vibrant future for the city and the automotive industry.

Andrew Merry | Moment | Getty ImagesDETROIT — The buzz around electric vehicles is wearing off. U.S. EV sales were a record 1.2 million units last year, representing 7.6% of the overall national market, Cox Automotive estimates. "Moving on to less tech-savvy buyers will slow the EV market share growth over the next few years." Automakers wanted to emulate Tesla's success, with some promising to exclusively offer EVs in the not-too-distant future. "Toyota is almost completely absent from the [battery electric vehicle] market yet will gain more U.S. market share than any other car company this year.

"Artificially low-priced Chinese EVs flooding the U.S. would cost thousands of American jobs and endanger the survival of the U.S. automotive industry as a whole." Auto industry officials told Reuters last month Biden is considering hiking tariffs on Chinese EVs and the letter is the latest in growing pressure on the White House to take further steps to prevent Chinese vehicle imports. The senators also asked Commerce to focus on the threat from potential imports of "highly connected Chinese vehicles and high-risk China-controlled connected and autonomous technologies."

Where Electric Vehicles Are (and Aren’t) Taking Off Across the U.S.Last year, Americans bought more than one million fully electric cars, trucks and SUVs, a record and a milestone for the country’s transition away from gas-powered vehicles. To fight climate change, the Biden administration and many state governments want to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. experience from pretty easy and kind of hard,” said Ken Kurani, a researcher focused on electric vehicles at the University of California, Davis. Only two electric vehicles in the analysis, both made by Tesla, cost the same or less than similar gas models. But for now, “there are some very real ways in which, in comparison to conventional vehicles, electric vehicles either really are still struggling to be as good or better, or are struggling against the imagination that they’re not as good or better,” he said.

Tesla still dominates the electric vehicle industry, but Hyundai Motor Group is the second best-selling EV manufacturer in the U.S."On the electrification side, Hyundai has done a really great job," said Sam Abuelsamid, principal research analyst at Guidehouse Insights. Forget Tesla , the real competition in electric vehicles is low-cost Chinese automakers. Farley wants to be prepared even if the U.S. government were to step in to curtail Chinese automakers' access. Outlook Ford investors shouldn't be concerned in the short term since Chinese EV competitors won't enter the market overnight. To that end, a group of lawmakers has urged the White House to boost tariffs on Chinese vehicles and figure out a way to be "prepared to address the coming wave" of Chinese vehicles by way of U.S. other trading partners. The cost of production will become more efficient, resulting in a more competitive and hopefully profitable Ford EV product.

London CNN —Germany is bracing for widespread disruption to rail services after train drivers embarked on a record six-day strike Wednesday, which will further strain crucial supply chains and deal a new blow to the sputtering economy. The state-owned rail operator said the action would cause “massive disruptions” to long-distance, regional and city commuter services until Monday. That was a major drag on the economy overall, with gross domestic product falling 0.3% in 2023, likely the weakest performance among Europe’s big countries. The strike represents “a major logistical challenge” for the chemical and pharmaceutical sector, the German Chemicals Industry Association told CNN.
