Four months ago, China’s leaders announced what seemed like a straightforward and proven plan to recharge the economy: Subsidize consumers who want to replace old cars and household appliances. Only 113,000 cars qualified for trade-in subsidies through June 25 — a blip in a country where monthly sales exceed two million cars. In 2009, the United States, Germany, France, Spain and Austria offered so-called cash for clunkers programs to revive car sales. They paid households to scrap gas guzzlers and replace them with newer cars with better fuel economy. China itself gave extensive tax cuts and subsidies for consumers to buy new cars and household appliances.

This was, for the most part, a dismal England performance, regardless of the supernatural deliverance at the end. Everything that was bad about today in Gelsenkirchen had been signposted by England over the course of the last few weeks. The red flags had all been there since England opened their campaign in this same city two weeks ago. And yes, England are desperately flawed, still unbalanced, still uncertain on the ball, still struggling to create chances even when they dominate possession. None of the lingering questions over this England team have been solved.

CNN —It is not uncommon to see certain teams emerge as dark horses or surprise packages at international tournaments, but few could have predicted that Austria would be the story of Euro 2024. AdvertisementThis was Belgium at their finest, and Romania raised the level of their game in the second half to try to equalise. If Austria wanted to have any chance of qualifying to the round of 16 they had to beat Poland in their second group game. The wide areas were where Ukraine focused their attacks, and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s square pass to Mykola Shaparenko made it 1-1 in the second half. However, Samet Akaydin and Altay Bayindir’s mishap on the second goal decreased Turkey’s probability of a comeback. More off-ball runs in the second half led to the third, and by then the match was done and dusted.

Discounted Russian gas is hitting European markets, the Center for European Policy Analysis said. Although the Ukrainian route has continued supplying Western markets through the war, its January expiration would likely be enough to risk a Gazprom bankruptcy. Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria are among examples CEPA cited as customers for Russian gas. Turkey held their nerve in their final group game in Hamburg to beat the Czech Republic and reach the Euro 2024 knockout stages. A red card produced by Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs after 20 minutes — the quickest in Euros history — curtailed a promising start from the Czechs. The action started in the 11th minute when Antonin Barak was handed a yellow card for a pull on Ferdi Kadioglu. And he was awarded a second yellow, and his marching orders, under 10 minutes later. However, the task was made significantly harder after Antonin Barak was handed his marching orders for a second yellow card.

Tyrian purple was a highly prized pigment developed in the Bronze Age, and it retained its status into the late medieval period. Several pottery fragments had residue of Tyrian purple pigment, the research team revealed. The well-preserved pigment could be used to dye textiles today, lead study author Dr. Lydia Berger said. Once collected, the snails had to be kept alive until the purple dye makers were ready to crush them and extract the mollusk’s mucus glands. The process came with a fishy odor, one that the researchers recognized when they came across the purple pigment residue in the recent excavation at Kolonna, she added.

France could only come second in Group D at Euro 2024 after a 1-1 draw with Poland in Dortmund. AdvertisementThe second half started in a similar manner, before a penalty in the 56th minute — scored by Kylian Mbappe, in his mask — gave France the lead. The theme continued in the second half as Skorupski was initially a match for everything that France threw at him, making seven saves in total. It took a penalty to finally beat him — Jakub Kiwior brought down Dembele and Mbappe sent Skorupski the wrong way. The other half, which awaited the team who finished second in Group D, has some of Euro 2024’s form teams — Portugal, Spain and Germany.

Why Europe’s youth are flirting with the far-right
  + stars: | 2024-06-25 | by ( Christian Edwards | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
In this month’s European Parliament elections, far-right parties performed predictably well – but especially, and unexpectedly, among young people. Far-right parties enjoyed a similar uptick in support in the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Austria, and continued to do well in Italy. Gonzalo Fuentes/ReutersBut young voters appear less concerned by these roots, says Simon Schnetzer, author of a recent survey of Germany’s youth. But the burst in support for far-right parties could spell a darker trend. This success of far-right parties should be a warning to Europe’s mainstream.

Covestro opens books to ADNOC over $12.5 billion takeover offer

German chemicals firm Covestro is giving ADNOC access to its books and stepping up talks based on an improved 11.7 billion euro ($12.5 billion) takeover offer, after more than a year of courtship by the Emirati energy company. Covestro said talks would proceed "in a timely manner" and there was no certainty of an agreement. A spokesperson for ADNOC welcomed Covestro's decision: "We look forward to jointly working with Covestro to swiftly progress due diligence for this important transaction," adding that this was ADNOC's final offer. ADNOC's initial informal offer to Covestro was reported in June 2023, but it wasn't until September last year that the German company entered into open-ended formal discussions. In December, it agreed to buy European chemical producer OCI's stake in ammonia and urea producer Fertiglobe for $3.6 billion.

The birth of the American mall ushered in an era of “windowless” shopping that’s largely still here. But the sneakiest reason why malls limit windows could be to make shoppers lose track of time. Windowless shopping creates an environment of consumption without distractions,” Flickinger said. The Southdale mall was functional and drab to look at and that is the blueprint that all traditional enclosed malls have continued to follow. Some of these adaptive uses of traditional malls might be creating a practical need for windows after all, she said.

CNN —Soccer superstar Kylian Mbappé was pictured wearing a French-inspired tricolore mask during a training session on Thursday, after the France captain broke his nose during the team’s opening Euro 2024 win against Austria three days ago. There had been fears the injury might rule Mbappé out of his nation’s second Group D match of Euro 2024 against the Netherlands on Friday, but France manager Didier Deschamps told reporters Thursday that the star should be available. The French Football Federation (FFF) said Mbappé was then taken to a local hospital, where X-rays confirmed the break. Traffic deaths have spiked in certain places around the world in recent years. Austria is trying to do something about it, recently passing a law to deter 'super speeders.' European countries tend to have stricter traffic rules and, as a result, safer roads. Like the US, Austria has seen a recent uptick in road deaths. The US has seen road deaths spike recently — in 2021, traffic fatalities hit a 16-year high, and in 2023, deaths were 13.6% higher than in 2019.
