Only a gold medal seemed worthy of her ability. Richardson’s time of 10.87 was good enough to win a silver, her first Olympic medal. Julien Alfred just won the FIRST Olympic medal EVER for Saint Lucia! Richardson missed out on delivering the United States’ first gold medal in the women’s 100 meters since Gail Devers in 1996. The announcements of track and field’s latest doping case or multiyear suspension arrived on an almost weekly basis this spring. The most immediate consequence, according to the official charged with pursuing doping violations in the sport, has been to create the impression that track has a serious doping problem, one perhaps much bigger than that of other sports in the Paris Olympics. The reality, he said, is that catching athletes who break the rules is the point. “I would be much more concerned to be a fan of other sports that don’t have any doping cases,” said Brett Clothier, the Australian lawyer who leads the Athletics Integrity Unit, the body charged with catching track’s doping cheats. “Having no cases doesn’t mean no doping.”

Aurélien Quinion, a French race-walker who competed on Thursday, had a dramatically different experience ahead of the 20km final. Quinion instead was at his wife’s bedside at 2 a.m. Paris time as she gave birth to their baby girl, Charlie. The French athlete eventually got about 30 minutes of something approaching sleep before getting in a taxi and heading to the race, less than six hours after Charlie entered the world. In a statement released by the French Athletics Federation, Quinion said mother and daughter were both doing well. Quinion finished ninth in the event, setting a personal best of 1:19:56.

Villepinte, France AP —Imane Khelif of Algeria won her opening Olympic boxing bout Thursday when opponent Angela Carini of Italy quit after just 46 seconds. Carini and Khelif exchanged only a few punches before Carini walked away and abandoned the bout — an extremely unusual occurrence in Olympic boxing. They were allowed to compete in Paris by the IOC task force, which has run the past two Olympic boxing tournaments. Olympic boxing reached gender parity for the first time this year, with 124 men and 124 women competing in Paris. Several sports have updated their gender rules over the past three years, including World Aquatics, World Athletics and the International Cycling Union.

My sons, Taylor and Tyler, started playing video games when they were 5 and 6. I had never heard of esports — or competitive video gaming — but at an open house, Taylor introduced me to the coach. Because of that, video gaming can now open up opportunities for students the same way traditional sports can, he said. Between the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, summer is always a busy season for those chasing an elusive Grand Slam title. and the richest college athletic conferences joined with plaintiffs’ lawyers on Friday to enter a $2.8 billion settlement agreement of their class-action antitrust lawsuit. The filing outlines in some detail how schools would be allowed for the first time to pay college athletes directly. N.C.A.A., and two companion lawsuits would open the door to a new model for college athletics. As soon as a year from now, schools could begin to spend up to slightly over $20 million a year to pay athletes, a ceiling that would rise along with college athletics revenues. The settlement agreement sidesteps addressing Title IX, which among other things bars colleges from treating men’s and women’s sports unequally.

Her multi-hour phone blitz to Democratic Party power players on Sunday hinted at an operation primed ahead of time but that was kept secret and didn’t leak. CNN —For many nations — not least the US — the upcoming Paris Olympics will take place against a background of deep political and social division. If you saw any of the European Athletics Championships events last month, you may well have been struck, as I was, by just how many Black athletes featured on podiums. At the Summer Olympics, the USA team will also feature numerous Black athletes, including gymnast Simone Biles, sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson and the (current) fastest man on earth, Noah Lyles. As you watch the Olympics this summer, take note of the sports in which Black people represent the USA and European countries. So no, Black athletes are not naturally better at some sports — they take the narrower opportunities open to them and work incredibly hard on their self-belief to make it to that podium.
