When the ladies weren’t playing in the water, they played a game of Barbie trivia. A server dressed as Ken, served pink cocktails like dragon fruit margaritas and huckleberry Malibu rum sparklers, she said. Strawberry hummus was served, along with a Barbie cake with a doll hidden inside. “I have my vintage black-and-white Barbie swimsuit, a neon spandex swimsuit and a pink patent skirt with pink cowboy boots and a pink cowboy hat,” Ms. Lester said. “I decided I needed to do a few outfit changes, just like Barbie does.”

The RBC-Ukraine news agency reported that explosions were heard on the bridge, with Russian military bloggers reporting two strikes. The bridge is a crucial supply route for Russian forces in Ukraine. In October, the bridge was damaged in a powerful blast, with Russian officials saying the explosion was caused by a truck that blew up while crossing the bridge, killing three people. CRIMEA AND RUSSIA LINKThe 19-km (12-mile) Crimea Bridge over the Kerch Strait is the only direct link between the transport network of Russia and the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in2014.

Like many other soldiers, Pavlo Vyshebaba, 37, a platoon commander with the 68th Brigade, had long been collecting donations to procure supplies for his unit, in his case using his poetry as an appeal. But donations, which once flooded in via the web, have been lagging lately as the war drags on. Mr. Vyshebaba recently took two weeks off from the war to give readings around the country in a push to ramp up contributions in person. “I saw that the fund-raising on the internet at the beginning of 2023 stopped being effective, that maybe my audience was exhausted and we didn’t have victories for a long time,” he said. “But we still needed all this stuff.”

Barbie likely wouldn't exist if Mattel's founder hadn't stumbled across Bild Lilli, a plastic doll based on a comic strip. The first Barbie doll, from 1959, had Lilli's red lips, high blonde ponytail, and winged eyeliner. But these dolls had flat chests, big bellies, and squatty legs – they were built like overweight six- or eight-year-olds," Handler wrote. The newspaper began making Lilli dolls in 1955 because of the comic's popularity and to market the newspaper. "Here were the breasts, the small waist, the long, tapered legs I had enthusiastically described for the designers all those years ago," Handler wrote.

Google's new AI-driven search will look and feel different from the familiar list of search results. Google's classic search engine is getting an AI makeover. For over two decades, the search site has been defined by a plain search bar and a list of results. At its 2023 Google I/O event on Wednesday, the tech giant unveiled an AI-driven search engine with the overall goal of making "search smarter and searching simpler." On top of the more familiar list of search results, there will be an AI-generated summary response answering users' questions.

MANY MEN—and perhaps you’re one—give summer socks a lot more thought than such tiny scraps of fabric might seem to deserve. The key question: Should you wear visible socks (hardly the breeziest or sexiest summer look), or choose “no-show” designs that hide inside your shoes, leaving ankles to lap up the sun’s rays? These invisible socks can be infuriating—constantly slipping underfoot, scrunching into a ball that wreaks havoc beneath your arches. What’s more, they have slipped out of fashion in recent years. This summer, you’ll likely spot more stylish guys wearing tall, ribbed tube socks than flashing their ankle bones.
More than 300 minors — including two 10-year-olds who were unpaid — were found to be working in violation of federal labor laws at McDonald's franchise restaurants across Kentucky and other states, the U.S. Labor Department said this week. The news comes as Republican lawmakers have targeted child labor laws nationwide. Labor Department investigators discovered two 10-year-olds working unpaid as late as 2 a.m. at a McDonald's location in Louisville, Kentucky, operated by Louisville-based Bauer Food LLC, according to a Tuesday release. Last year, the Labor Department division found that 688 minors were employed illegally in hazardous positions in fiscal year 2022, the highest annual count since fiscal year 2011. Child labor laws exist to ensure that when young people work, the job does not jeopardize their health, well-being or education," said Garnett-Civils.
Ending the retailers’ crisis has a high price tag

BARCELONA, May 2 (Reuters Breakingviews) - High-street retailers are facing a heavy bill to weather the cost-of-living crisis. The cost of heating stores and staff requests for pay rises are squeezing operating margins at top players like H&M (HMb.ST) and Next (NXT.L). Shrinking disposable income is making it hard for these retailers to boost sales to protect margins. Most bricks-and-mortar retailers trade on higher multiples than they did before the war in Ukraine sparked soaring inflation. But that leaves a squeezed middle of retailers like H&M exposed to the brunt of the retail crisis.

The Met Gala, which will be held next week, serves as the unofficial birthday party for Vogue magazine. The outfits at Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World gala, held last night at Jazz at Lincoln Center, generally don’t involve as much forethought, but it is nevertheless an opulent affair. Tiffany Haddish wore a red and black sequined gown and Natasha Lyonne was in a black Area dress with a bedazzled oyster bodice. The storied masquerade party and annual gala dinner raises money to preserve the artworks of the flood-threatened Italian city. The event raised $1.2 million and transformed the Plaza into an arms-in-the-air dance party with the D.J.
The McDonald’s app had 127 million downloads worldwide last year—almost four times as many as the next-closest industry competitor. There are some equally mind-boggling figures surrounding the chain today, and not just in its pleasing first-quarter earnings report released Tuesday morning. Its sheer heft as the world’s largest restaurant chain, along with a good dose of digital savvy, has helped expand its lead over fast-food rivals. Consider, for example, that there were 127 million downloads worldwide of the chain’s app last year, according to Apptopia. Even in the fast food-happy United States, downloads last year numbered as many as the second, third and fourth competing app combined.
To see a rainbow make a perfect, full circle, you'd need to see it from a plane in the air. This happens for very small droplets, such as a fine mist, or just after a rain shower when the air is just moist. You need very small water droplets in order for a rainbow to form. If you are flying a little above the cloud cover, keep a lookout for the small shadow of your plane on the clouds. The clouds are tiny water droplets, so chances are you may see a small circle of color around the shadow of the airplane.

NEW YORK, April 3 (Reuters) - The number of corporate employees McDonald's Corp(MCD.N) plans to lay off this week will tally in the "hundreds," a source familiar with the burger chain's thinking said on Monday, as the company moves forward with a previously announced restructuring. McDonald's will have more employees going into new roles this week or receiving promotions then being laid off, the source added. The chain known for its Golden Arches has more than 150,000 employees globally, with about 70% based outside of the United States, including in company-owned restaurants. The layoffs do not include the more than 2 million worker in franchised McDonald's restaurants around the world. As part of updating its strategy, McDonald's also plans to build new restaurants.

Generation Alpha is the most plugged-in generation of children yet, and they are developing strong brand awareness by age 9. 37% of Gen Alpha parents said their kids' favorite restaurant was McDonald's, handily besting second-place Chick-fil-A's 6%. Fifty-four percent of Gen Alpha kids own tablets – and they watch a lot of streaming video content, mostly on YouTube, Disney+, and Netflix, the survey found. Still, digital influence is a distant follower to the top driver of Gen Alpha brand and product selection: seeing stuff on store shelves. "When seeking to connect with Gen Alpha, brands can look to established leaders like McDonald's and Disney," the Morning Consult researchers conclude.
Hop on the tramTo get to Santa Teresa, a picturesque, bohemian neighborhood on a hill, catch one of the iconic yellow street trams that provide a terrific tour on the way up. The tram passes over the famed Arches of Lapa, an 18th-century aqueduct that is a symbol of Rio. The tram leaves every 30 minutes from the downtown station (tickets available there, 20 reis), with the final ride at 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The trams seat just 16 people and can sell out on the weekends, so the earlier you ride, the better. Before you hop on, duck into the Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio , which is next to the downtown station.
