WASHINGTON — The last time Steve Bannon was a free man, Joe Biden was the presumptive Democratic nominee for president. Randilee Giamusso, a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson, confirmed that Bannon was released. CNN —The North Carolina Court of Appeals on Tuesday unanimously rejected a Republican bid to have election officials segregate overseas ballots cast by people who have never resided in the state for additional checks of the voters’ eligibility. The court’s decision is the latest blow to Republican efforts to attack overseas ballots in critical battleground states. Earlier Tuesday, a federal judge in Pennsylvania dismissed a challenge to the vetting procedures for overseas ballots in that state. And last week, a state judge in Michigan sided against the GOP in a case targeting ballots cast by people who had never lived there but were eligible to vote in the state because of familial ties to it. Though North Carolina’s policy of accepting ballots from overseas voters has been on the books for several years, starting in 2016, civilian voters abroad began outnumbering the military vote overseas – which itself is not as conservative as it once was.

Betting markets are booming ahead of the US Presidential election. Kalshi has attracted $100M in election bets this month and is the top free finance app in Apple's app store. Robinhood is getting in on the action, announcing its own election betting platform on Monday. Earlier this month, a US federal appeals court cleared Kalshi to open its election betting platform for US citizens. Interactive Brokers also launched a slew of election betting contracts earlier this month following the court decision to allow Kalshi to operate.

A federal appeals court ruled Friday that a Mississippi law allowing mail-in ballots to be counted if they are postmarked before Election Day — but received up to five days after Election Day — is pre-empted by federal law. It does, however, pave the way for a possible challenge that could go up to the U.S. Supreme Court, which could have ramifications for states that do allow ballots postmarked before Election Day to be counted. The appeals court ruling says that no such ballots should be counted. "Federal law requires voters to take timely steps to vote by Election Day. And federal law does not permit the State of Mississippi to extend the period for voting by one day, five days, or 100 days," the ruling said.

A federal judge on Friday granted a Department of Justice request to block Virginia from systematically removing alleged noncitizens from the voter rolls this close to an election. "All of the eligible voters who were wrongfully purged from the voter rolls will now be able to cast their ballots," Snow said. GUATEMALA CITY — A Guatemalan judge on Friday ruled that jailed journalist José Zamora can leave prison and be held in house arrest after over 800 days behind bars. Zamora, a well-known journalist who founded the now-defunct El Periódico newspaper and whose work has criticized successive governments, was arrested in July 2022 on money laundering charges. Zamora was in 2023 sentenced to six years in prison for money laundering. Judge Erick Garcia on Friday argued that Zamora’s time in preventative prison had reached its limit, in line with human rights standards. “We are imposing house arrest,” Garcia said in his ruling.

The 2020 campaign may have also suffered from a lack of imagination about how big the turnout would be and what Democrats were doing in the courts to expand the vote, a Trump campaign adviser said. CNN —A panel of three Donald Trump-appointed judges said Friday that Mississippi was violating federal law by counting mail ballots that arrive after Election Day, but stopped short of blocking the policy before the election, in a ruling that could nevertheless impact voting-related lawsuits this fall. The ruling from the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals is a victory for the Republican National Committee and others who brought the case in Mississippi, a non-battleground state with very little mail-in voting, seeking a ruling by a far-right circuit court friendly to their arguments. “Voters deserve nothing less than a fair and transparent election which ends on November 5th. “Congress statutorily designated a singular ‘day for the election’ of members of Congress and the appointment of presidential electors,” the 5th Circuit panel said. “That is not to say all the ballots must be counted on Election Day,” the opinion states.
