CNN —When an overwhelmed man came to a New Hampshire animal shelter last week hoping to surrender 150 mice, shelter employees were ready to assist. But now, the shelter is facing an “enormous” breeding problem, the director said – because the man didn’t have just 150 mice. “When he first arrived, he said he had 150 mice,” said Lisa Dennison, executive director of the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “The breeding of the mice has just created this enormous problem for him,” Dennison told CNN on Sunday. “With a gestation period of just around 20 days, mice can reproduce at an alarming rate.”Staff and volunteers attend to surrendered pet mice at the New Hampshire SPCA.

CNN —A South African court ordered police to end a standoff with illegal miners and allow emergency workers to gain access to a shaft where hundreds are believed to be holed up. On Friday, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) said in a statement it was investigating the police for restricting the miners’ essential supplies. The South African Police Service welcomed the court order but said that the ruling does not prevent the detention of illegal miners who are in good health. Three illegal miners resurfaced by Saturday afternoon, according to the police. Also on Saturday, a South African national was arrested in Kanana at a house used as a smelter – a facility used to purify gold – they added.

Miami Beach, Florida AP —A bodyless head that washed ashore in South Florida has been identified as that of a 19-year-old swimmer who went missing in Miami Beach after he tried to rescue his younger sister from a rip current, authorities said. Meanwhile, a man’s head was found November 12 by a beach worker in Key Biscayne, the barrier island just off Miami. A bystander went into the water and rescued the girl, but when that person went back to help Castaneda, he was nowhere to be found, family members said. “He would have loved to see how many people have come and come together and love him wholeheartedly,” Castaneda’s sister, Chloe, told WBFS-TV.

Ukraine can defeat Russia if it and its Western backers learn from America's failure in the Vietnam War, a Ukrainian security expert argues. Danylyuk attributes America's failure in Vietnam to a "protracted multi-dimensional strategy by the Soviet Union, on whose help it was completely dependent." Crucial ways to defeat Russia's invasion can be found in the Soviet Union's multi-pronged strategy in Vietnam, analyst Oleksandr Danylyuk says. AP Photo/John T. WheelerThe first prong of this strategy would be to "stabilize the frontline and to render any successful offensive actions by Russian troops impossible." "The only explanation for the lack of a mass anti-war movement and large-scale protests is the absence of an organized and popular opposition in Russia," Danylyuk said.

The man accused of killing Laken Riley earlier this year "went out hunting for females" on the day the nursing student in Georgia was slain, prosecutors told a judge Friday on the first day of Jose Antonio Ibarra's trial. "When Laken Riley refused to be his rape victim, he bashed her skull in with a rock repeatedly," prosecutor Sheila Ross said in her opening statement. Laken Riley. “The evidence that Jose Ibarra killed anyone is circumstantial,” defense attorney Dustin Kirby said, adding the evidence “that links Mr. Ibarra to that event, is lacking” upon closer inspection. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un guided a test of suicide drones and ordered mass production of the aerial weapon, saying the introduction of such drones around the world requires an urgent update of military theory, state media said Friday. Kim “underscored the need to build a serial production system as early as possible and go into full-scale mass production,” state news agency KCNA said. Kim observed a test firing of what appear to be suicide drones alongside military officials at an undisclosed location. That has prompted South Korea to deploy weapons to shoot down North Korean drones. North Korea and Russia have recently ratified a comprehensive strategic partnership that their leaders signed in June, which includes a mutual defense pact.

New Delhi has a severe air quality level of 424, according to live rankings kept by Swiss group IQAir, the worst among global capitals. The city battles smog — a toxic mix of smoke and fog — every winter as cold air traps dust, emissions and smoke from illegal farm fires. Delhi flights faced delays, with tracking website Flightradar24 showing 88% of departures and 54% of arrivals were delayed as of Thursday afternoon due to smog. According to projections from The Associated Press, Republicans flipped control of the Michigan state House, padded their narrow majorities in the New Hampshire state House and Senate, and maintained their majority in the Pennsylvania state Senate. In Arizona, Republicans appeared poised to expand their narrow majorities in the state House and state Senate, though the AP hasn’t yet called enough races to make that determination. In many districts in both states, Democrats had centered their message on the accomplishments the party achieved with that power. Democrats, however, maintained their 102-101 majority in the Pennsylvania state House — the only bright spot for the party in state legislative chambers where partisan control had been at stake. In addition, Republicans’ victories in state legislative races came even as Democratic groups massively outspent them.
