When Google released its first Android smartphone in 2008, the company’s founders slid onstage in roller skates. On Tuesday, executives left the skates behind but kept to the tone of that pitch: Google crammed all the cutting-edge technology it could into the latest Pixel phones. Google is hoping the features will help the four new phones — including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and the double-wide Pixel 9 Fold — finally overcome consumer apathy to its smartphone ambitions. It is Google’s latest attempt to make a splash in a smartphone market dominated by its partner Samsung, as well as by Apple, which has already detailed the A.I. It has about 5 percent of the smartphone market in the United States, and generally less than that in other major markets, like Britain, Germany and India, according to Statista, which compiles data.

While a dwindling attention span is not due to a personal failing (despite individual variability) a majority of the time, experts say there are changes you can make to regain control over your mind. “Tech companies and ad marketing companies use this information to construct profiles about us, and then they design algorithms that are targeted to capture our attention,” Mark said. “We have a tank of attentional resources (that) gets drained when we keep switching our attention,” Mark said. Additionally, he suggested using an app that places time limits on social media or websites you find yourself addicted to using. “The way I feel at the moment is like somebody is pouring itching powder over us all day,” Hari said.

I loved the phone, but using it for a week also made me realize how complicated excessive social media use is to solve. AdvertisementIt all reminded me of a conversation I had earlier this year with an ex-digital brand strategist about reducing social media use. I'd see memes from friends who forgot to text my Gabb phone and would get sucked right back into social media. Plus, the only reason I have social media boundaries at all is because I grew up being encouraged to have hobbies.

A federal U.S. judge ruled Monday that Google has illegally held a monopoly in two market areas: search and text advertising. The landmark case from the government, filed in 2020, alleged that Google has kept its share of the general search market by creating strong barriers to entry and a feedback loop that sustained its dominance. General search services, according to the court, applies to Google’s core search engine, where it traditionally competed with Yahoo. General search text advertising refers to the text ads that run alongside search results. However, the ruling found that general search advertising is not a market so there can be no monopoly control.

A new court filing accuses Skillz Inc. — a struggling mobile gaming company — of trying to sabotage its rivals by creating a fake consumer advocacy website. The allegations were made in a counterclaim filed to court Monday by one of those competitors, Papaya Games. A screenshot of the 4 Fair Play website, included in a Papaya Games court filing, shows that Skillz's competitors were identified as the worst offenders — not Skillz itself. A Skillz executive provided comments on the 4 Fair Play website design, according to screenshots of a website mockup included as a court exhibit. But it said in Monday's counterclaim that Skillz games, however, do use bots.

I think that's the right approach for Samsung, I don't think they have unrealistic expectations for volumes on this.
