Nov 20 (Reuters) - Norway's Casper Ruud said he was not expecting to reach yet another final in 2022 after beating Andrey Rublev in straight sets to book his place in Sunday's showpiece at the ATP Finals in Turin. Ruud confidently swatted aside an error-prone Rublev 6-2 6-4 on Saturday to set up a clash against Novak Djokovic. "I think I surprised myself for sure," Ruud told reporters. "Novak, in a final on an indoor hard court here, is one of the toughest players you can play in the history of our sport," Ruud said. It's not going to be easy, obviously, but I will give it a shot, my best shot."
Nov 19 (Reuters) - Andrey Rublev said he disagrees with Stefanos Tsitsipas' assessment of him as a player with "few tools" following a come-from-behind victory over the Greek in the ATP Finals on Friday. "I just wanted to try something new, to see if it might work, throw him off a little bit," Tsitsipas told reporters. I feel like the better player. When asked about Tsitsipas' comments, Rublev told reporters, "I don't know if I have few tools or not." "Obviously he's a better player because he's higher ranked and he achieved better results.
Djokovic sets up meeting with Ruud in ATP final championship

"I had to fight to survive," the 35-year-old said in remarks provided by the ATP. If Djokovic wins the final, he will claim the biggest prize in tennis history, cashing in $4,740,300 for lifting the tournament trophy undefeated. But he will have to tame Ruud first, who confidently swatted aside an error-prone Andrey Rublev 6-2 6-4 in their semi-final affair. Ruud quickly extinguished that momentum, however, holding his arms out wide after clinching the match with a backhand winner down the line. TURIN, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic booked his place in the last four of the ATP Finals with a crushing 6-4 6-1 defeat of Russian Andrey Rublev at the Turin showpiece on Wednesday. After the first nine games went with serve, Djokovic switched on the afterburners to outclass Rublev. Rublev, who like Djokovic had won his opening match at the year-ender, capitulated when serving to stay in the opener, losing the set as Djokovic thumped a backhand return winner. The second set was a non-event as five-time champion Djokovic roared to victory in little more than an hour. "In the second set I just wanted to use that momentum and it was a flawless second set."
Rublev battles back to down Medvedev in ATP Finals opener

Nov 14 (Reuters) - Andrey Rublev squandered seven set points early in his meeting with fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev before roaring back to seal a 6-7(7) 6-3 7-6(7) opening victory at the ATP Finals in Turin on Monday. "I was thinking about the U.S. Open, because when we played in the quarter-finals in 2020, I think I was 5-1 in a tie-break, also something like 6-2, but I was leading something similar in a tie-break," Rublev said. "But when I lost that set, I couldn't play anymore, and I was thinking it can't happen (again) I have to change something. You have to keep playing'," Rublev, who also beat Medvedev in the Cincinnati semi-finals last year, said. "For sure, he felt the same, 'so just keep playing if you have the chance, go for it'.

"To beat Novak. To be able to beat him in such occasion ... in the final is probably the best feeling of this whole week," said Rune, who defeated Hubert Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev, Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime en route to the title clash. "It was also important for me to beat Felix and Alcaraz and these guys. But still, to be able to beat Novak ... he's probably one of the greatest we have ever had in this sport. I'm super happy how I officially ended my season, and if there possibly is more matches, I'm super excited for it."

PARIS, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Danish teenager Holger Rune fought back from a set down to beat hot favourite Novak Djokovic 3-6 6-3 7-5 and win his first Masters title in Paris on Sunday. "You've put in a lot of hours of hard work, it's paying off for you and your future is bright." Rune looked down and out when six-times Paris champion Djokovic produced a near-flawless opening set, with the Serbian virtually unstoppable on his first serve as the 19-year-old struggled with unforced errors. In the final set, Djokovic raced to a 3-1 lead but Rune quickly broke back, with the Serbian calling for a physio during a changeover to check on his thigh before the Dane levelled the set at 3-3. "I really enjoyed my time at the tournament here and I can't wait to be back here next year."

Nov 4 (Reuters) - World number one Carlos Alcaraz retired injured against Holger Rune at the Paris Masters on Friday, sending his fellow 19-year-old through to a semi-final clash against Felix Auger-Aliassime after the Canadian extended his winning run to 16 matches. Rune outclassed Alcaraz on serve to win the opening set 6-3 and held firm in the second when the Spaniard stepped up his level before retiring four points into the tiebreak, having received medical treatment for an abdominal strain at 6-5. Alcaraz will have nine days to recover for the Nov. 13-20 ATP Finals in Turin, where he is set to make his debut. I couldn't serve well, I couldn't hit the forehand well said Alcaraz, who withdrew with Rune leading 6-3 6-6 (3-1) in the quarter-final. "I feel better and better," Auger-Aliassime said.

Top seed Alcaraz dominated from the outset and dropped just two points on serve in the opening set before fending off a second-set fightback from Bulgarian Dimitrov to close out the match in one hour 12 minutes. "(Grigor's) level is very much not the level you saw today, but I played very well," said Spaniard Alcaraz, who is chasing a third ATP Masters 1000 title this season. Djokovic, a six-times winner at the ATP Masters 1000 event, delivered a commanding performance in his straight-sets victory over Russia's Khachanov, hitting 18 winners. Fritz, the highest-seeded American in the draw beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-5 6-2 on the back of a decent first serve despite trailing by a break in the opening set. He's got weapons on both sides, he's extremely quick as well, so there's nowhere you can really play with a lot of safety," Fritz said. "Felix has played really, really well, so he deserves it, but I am going to try to steal his spot this week for sure." Frances Tiafoe also moved into the second round without conceding a break point with a 6-4 6-4 win over Lorenzo Sonego while fellow American Maxime Cressy ousted Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-3 6-3. Defending champion Novak Djokovic, world number one Carlos Alcaraz, Rafa Nadal and Daniil Medvedev are among the main seeds who received a bye into the second round.
