Last month, India surprised buyers by imposing a ban on exports of widely consumed non-basmati white rice, following a ban on broken rice exports last year. "With this duty, Indian parboiled rice would become as expensive as supplies from Thailand and Pakistan. India exported 7.4 million tons of parboiled rice in 2022. "Global rice prices had begun to moderate in the last few days after rallying more than 25% due to India's restrictions last month. His administration has extended a ban on wheat exports after curbing rice shipments in September 2022.

Microsoft took down a string of embarrassing and offensive travel articles last week. The company said the articles were not published by "unsupervised AI" and blamed "human error." Last week, Microsoft took down a string of articles published by "Microsoft Travel" that included a bizarre recommendation for visitors to Ottawa to visit the Ottawa Food Bank and to "consider going into it on an empty stomach." "This article has been removed and we have identified that the issue was due to human error," a Microsoft spokesperson said. Based on the examples I found, whatever human controls Microsoft had in place were so minimal as to be functionally useless.

An FBI veteran said his superiors suppressed investigations of Trump, Insider can exclusively reveal. Those figures, the statement claims, explicitly included "anyone in the [Trump] White House and any former or current associates of President Trump." The directions he received included a strict prohibition on filing intelligence reports relating to Giuliani or any other Trump associate. Even before the emergence of this new whistleblower, there has been ample evidence of individual FBI agents with pro-Trump partisan sympathies. Some FBI agents were reportedly satisfied by an assertion made by Trump's legal team that he'd turned over all his classified documents, and wanted to close the Mar-a-Lago government records investigation down.

A home security camera video showing a father trying to rush out of the house with his children during an earthquake in Alaska in November 2018 has been miscaptioned online as a scene from a July 2023 earthquake centered in southeastern Alaska. Jesse Elmore of Anchorage, Alaska, the father seen in the video, confirmed to Reuters that the clip from his in-home security camera shows him responding during an earthquake centered in Anchorage on Nov. 30, 2018. Posts sharing the video as more recent make reference to a July 16, 2023 earthquake focused on the Alaska Peninsula, an area that separates the Gulf of Alaska from the Bering Sea (here). The caption states that the video shows a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that occurred on Nov. 30, 2018, and was filmed in Anchorage, Alaska (here), archived (here). Home security camera video dating to November 2018 does not show a scene during a 2023 Alaska earthquake.

Northern Pacific Airways launched its first revenue flight between California and Las Vegas on Friday. Startup airline Northern Pacific Airways is struggling to take off — both figuratively and literally. However, regulators required Northern Pacific to start flying before it could apply for ETOPS — igniting a mad dash for its operating certificate and a new first route. On July 9, Northern Pacific got the official green light to launch flights, with CEO Rob McKinney sharing the news on Twitter. Despite the turbulent first two years of business and a shaky inaugural, Northern Pacific is still planning to eventually fly to Asia.

CNN —A crucial deal allowing the export of grain from Ukraine is set to expire Monday unless Russia agrees to an extension. Saint-Kitts-and-Nevis-flagged bulker TK Majestic, carrying grain under the UN's Black Sea Grain Initiative, waits in the southern anchorage of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Turkey. Darryl Dyck | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe strike at the Canada's West Coast ports is over, after both the labor union and port ownership accepted a deal presented by federal mediators. ILWU Canada union workers were expected to be back on the job for the 4:30 p.m. Pacific time shift on Thursday, but undoing the damage to the supply chain from close to two weeks of strike will take weeks. While the production ramp down at the ports was seen immediately, the congestion as a result of the 13-day strike will have a lasting effect on ports. The International Longshoremen and Warehouse Union of Canada begin its strike on July 1. The ports strike has already damaged the U.S. supply chain.

"The accomplishment of the meeting was the meeting itself, not specific issues," said Scott Kennedy, a China economics expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. A senior U.S. Treasury official accompanying Yellen on her first trip to China as secretary described it as "respectful, frank and constructive," adding: "She was warmly received." Her meeting on Saturday with He, China's new economic czar, was scheduled for two hours but lasted five, followed by a "cordial" dinner, the official said. In the meantime, Yellen said the talks set the stage for more frequent U.S.-China communications at the staff level about economic issues, including areas of disagreement. A possible venue for this would be the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco in November.

CNN —In the classic 1999 film, “Election,” the high school student government vote has everything: naked ambition, campaign poster shredding, ballot manipulation, infidelity and more. But what the gifted writer Tom Perotta likely couldn’t imagine was an election in which two unpopular candidates square off for president. That doesn’t happen in high school, even in a satirical movie. The president supports stripping that state of its first-in-the-nation primary status in favor of South Carolina, the state that energized Biden’s 2020 campaign. “In the runup to the 2024 elections, Democrats plan to put the Supreme Court on trial,” wrote David Mark.

Orpea creditors Kyma Capital and LMR Partners lodged on Tuesday an application against Anchorage and PJT Partners in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, the source said. Anchorage is a member of Orpea's steering committee, a group of unsecured creditors that is supporting a proposal to restructure the French group's debt. PJT Partners are advisors to the steering committee. Kyma Capital and LMR Partners argue that the restructuring deal benefits the steering committee at the expense of other creditors, and that the documents would back up their view. In a landslide vote, over 99% of ILWU Canada union workers critical for West Coast port operations, including in Vancouver and Prince Rupert, voted in favor of supporting a strike. The biggest port to be affected is the Port of Vancouver, the largest port in Canada. It is estimated that Canadian West Coast ports handle almost $225 billion worth of cargo a year, with items transported by rail including many consumer products, from apparel to electronics and home goods. The threat of a strike is occurring as labor tensions have escalated at U.S. West Coast ports. "This is a significant blow to operations on the West Coast," said Paul Brashier, vice president of drayage and intermodal at ITS Logistics.

Cities have built so much parking through a policy few people know: minimum parking requirements. Mandatory parking minimums helped shape the modern makeup of America cities. More parking spaces mean bigger parking lots. There are an estimated three to eight parking spots for every car in America.
