China began holding military drills in areas surrounding Taiwan on Monday, days after Beijing accused the self-governing island’s president of promoting independence in a National Day address. China said its army, navy, air force, rocket force and other forces were taking part in the drills to test their ability to fight alongside each other, and to send a warning to Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory. Absurd and comical rescue images that appear to have been made with artificial intelligence have sprung up on social media this week as Hurricane Milton hit Florida, a reaction to the earlier proliferation of more realistic fake images related to Hurricane Helene. But as technology has advanced, fake images generated by AI have continued to proliferate on the internet, at times making it easier for false information to spread online. Public officials even cautioned Floridians this week to beware of AI-generated images that falsely depict conditions on the ground. The inspiration for the hurricane rescue images meme format apparently stems from a viral post from a public official on X, who shared a fake image of a child crying while holding a puppy with a flooded backdrop amid Hurricane Helene, which some recirculated as if it were real. In one meme image posted by an X user, former President Donald Trump appears to be dropping a basket of puppies over a body of water.

CNN —Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday night, making landfall as a powerful Category 3 storm. The intense hurricane spawned tornadoes, dumped rain across much of the state, left millions without power and claimed at least 12 lives, including five people in St. Lucie County. Milton is the third hurricane to hit Florida this year — which has only happened during five other hurricane seasons since 1871. Many areas in Florida are also recovering from the aftermath of a Milton-spurred torrent “supercharged” tornadoes, according to National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan. Milton was the fifth hurricane to make landfall in the United States this year, joining Category 1 Beryl, Category 1 Debby, Category 2 Francine and Category 4 Helene.

As much as consumers love shopping online, most hate to shell out for shipping charges. Paying for return shipping is even worse. These days, 77% of shoppers check the return policy before making a purchase, according to a September survey of 1,500 adults by GoDaddy. Nearly a third, 30%, of consumers said paying for return shipping was more annoying than jury duty and going to the Department of Motor Vehicles. When it comes to winning over customers, return fees matter, other reports also show.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday takes on another battle over restrictions on firearms as the justices consider the Biden administration's move to ban "ghost gun" kits that allow people to assemble deadly weapons at home while skirting existing regulations. The challengers focus on the text of the Gun Control Act, saying in their brief that the law simply doesn't apply to gun kits. The ATF does not have unilateral authority to ban ghost guns, with Congress required to act if it wants to do so, they argue. Those defending the availability of ghost gun kits say that they are mostly used by hobbyists, rejecting the government's argument that criminals favor them. Although it is a gun case, the legal question does not turn on the right to bear arms under the Constitution's 2nd Amendment.

CNN —The Supreme Court on Tuesday signaled a willingness to uphold a Biden administration regulation on “ghost guns,” mail-order kits that allow people to build untraceable weapons at home and that are turning up at crime scenes with greater frequency. The difference here, she said, is that the ghost guns are marketed to be built into guns and serve no other conceivable purpose. President Joe Biden’s administration told the court in briefing that police departments have faced an “explosion of crimes involving ghost guns” in recent years. In 2017, police submitted about 1,600 ghost guns recovered at crime scenes for tracing. After that decision, a lower court stepped in to block the regulations as applied to two manufacturers.

Hard Rock has the monopoly on sports betting in the state, winning the exclusive tribal gaming compact following a hard-fought battle against Flutter -owned FanDuel, DraftKings and Penn Entertainment. When asked about comments made by FanDuel CEO Amy Howe on trying again to get into the Florida market, Hard Rock International Chairman and Seminole Gaming CEO Jim Allen said he's open to it. FanDuel and DraftKings declined to comment on the possibility of entering into a deal with Hard Rock. Last December at Seminole Hard Rock, the company marked what it called "a new chapter in Florida gaming," when it launched sports betting and expanded the casino table games across six Seminole Casinos in Florida. Allen declined to give specifics on sports gaming revenue in Florida on the basis that the tribe is a sovereign nation.
