And many were tied to the Farnborough Air Show in July, which is the site of many commercial jet sales. The July orders brought full-year gross orders to only 228 commercial jets. Subtracting canceled orders, Boeing had only 186 net orders in the first seven months of the year. Airbus has delivered 400 jets through the first seven months of this year.

SAO PAULO — Families of victims of an airliner crash in Brazil are gathering Sunday at a morgue and hotels in Sao Paulo as forensics experts work to identify the remains of the 62 people killed in the accident. Brazilian media said another four people were identified at the Sao Paulo morgue, which did not confirm the information. Metsul, one of Brazil’s most respected meteorological companies, said Friday there were reports of severe icing in Sao Paulo state around the time of the crash. Sao Paulo state government said 26 families have already attended the morgue for identification efforts, with more expected on Sunday. The ATR 72, which is built by a joint venture of Airbus in France and Italy’s Leonardo SpA.

JetBlue Airways shares jumped 20% on Tuesday after the airline posted a surprise profit and said it would defer another $3 billion in aircraft spending through 2029 to improve cash flow. The airline posted a $25 million profit for the second quarter, down nearly 82% from last year. JetBlue hasn't posted an annual profit since before the pandemic. It also is trying to better deploy its aircraft outfitted with premium seats like its Mint aircraft to maximize revenue. One standout was Air Korea's order for up to 50 Boeing wide-body planes, including the 777X, which Boeing is working toward getting certified by regulators. As both manufacturers grapple with production strains, Air Korea CEO Walter Cho quipped during the Boeing order signing: "Whichever comes first will become our flagship, whoever's on time." Boeing has an overall backlog of close to 5,500 planes, while Airbus has more than 8,000 on order. Many airlines from United Airlines to Air India have also stocked up on new jet orders as travel rebounded in the pandemic.

Air New Zealand is waiting for eight Boeing 787 Dreamliners and five Airbus A320neo and A3201neo planes, according to its website. SAF has a lower carbon footprint than traditional jet fuel because it’s made from waste products, where the carbon has already been emitted; or from plants that absorb CO2 as they grow. That was much higher than the 5% reduction target in international aviation emissions by 2030 agreed by 193 countries at a United Nations-backed conference last November. The aviation industry accounted for 2% of global energy-related carbon emissions in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). “Planned production capacity for sustainable aviation fuels will provide just a small fraction of jet fuel demand by 2027,” notes the IEA on its website.
