Amazon shares are the way to go for 2025, according to TD Cowen. Analyst John Blackledge named the e-commerce giant a top large-cap pick for the new year. He also raised his price target on the stock by $25 to $265, which suggests upside of 15.1% over Wednesday's close. TD Cowen is in the majority on Wall Street, with the lion's share of analysts polled by LSEG holding a buy-equivalent rating on the stock. However, the megacap tech stock has surged more than 51% in 2024, meaning it has outperformed the broader market.

Between 2009 and 2018, the number of fast-casual restaurants in America doubled, while sales have nearly tripled. When the gravy train stops, fast-casual restaurants are going to be in trouble. To understand why private equity is pouring money into restaurants, we have to start with the appeal of the fast-casual model. The limited menu enables both fast-food and fast-casual restaurants to be efficient, keep costs down, and avoid losses from food waste and labor. Because a lot of the weaker players have been weeded out," Susskind says about fast-casual restaurants.

South Korean markets have had a dismal 2024, with the so-called "Korea discount" in its stock markets widening compared to other global peers. The "Korea discount" refers to South Korean securities trading at lower valuations relative to regional peers due to investors' concerns over issues such as corporate governance at large family-owned conglomerates that have an outsized influence over the country's economy. Both the metrics, which indicate how much the investors value the index, have declined from a year earlier. For comparison, Japan's Nikkei 225 stock benchmark has a price-to-book ratio of 1.44 while its price-to-earnings ratio stands at 15.90 as of Dec. 11. While Japan stocks surged as it implemented measures to lift its markets, South Korea has been struggling.

This is what 4 of Trump’s cabinet picks think of the agencies they would lead. If confirmed, Ms. Gabbard would oversee more than a dozen spy agencies and have access to highly sensitive intelligence. by firing its top officials, closing its headquarters in Washington and going after Mr. Trump’s rivals. Biden administration officials said Wednesday they have no current plans to authorize a stockpiled bird flu vaccine, despite an escalating outbreak among livestock in the U.S. and at least 58 human infections across seven states. Almost all bird flu cases in the U.S. have been in farmworkers who have had contact with infected animals — either dairy cows or poultry — aside from a patient in Missouri and a child in California. The federal government has two bird flu vaccine candidates available in limited quantities in the nation’s Strategic National Stockpile, though they need to be authorized by the Food and Drug Administration before they can be used. Still, some public health experts believe the time for vaccination is now, particularly for farmworkers. In 1976, at the first signs of an H1N1 swine flu outbreak in the U.S., public health officials quickly initiated a nationwide vaccine campaign.

North Carolina Republican lawmakers voted to override a gubernatorial veto of a bill that strips the state's incoming Democratic officials of key powers. The GOP-led state House of Representatives on Wednesday voted along party lines to override outgoing Democratic Gov. The Republican-controlled state Senate voted to override Cooper's veto last week, meaning the bill will now go into effect, though legal challenges are expected. Three state House Republicans from western North Carolina who voted against the bill originally supported the veto override on Wednesday, giving the party the three-fifths support in the chamber necessary to overrule Cooper. "The bill, to be clear, is a power grab, not disaster relief," Stein said at a Democratic Governors Association meeting last weekend in California.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday the league’s partnership with Roc Nation, the entertainment company founded by rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z, is “not changing” amid the civil lawsuit filed against Jay-Z accusing him of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. “We are aware of the civil allegations and Jay Z’s really strong response to that," Goodell said at a press conference following a league meeting in Irving, Texas. But from our standpoint our relationship is not changing with them, including our preparations for the next Super Bowl." The NFL and Roc Nation entered a partnership in 2019 for the company to serve as the league’s “live music entertainment strategist.” Roc Nation has since annually produced the halftime show at the Super Bowl, including Kendrick Lamar’s upcoming performance in New Orleans in February. “These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!!

Plus, chief political analyst Chuck Todd breaks down the opportunities and challenges facing Mike Duggan's independent bid for Michigan governor. In the past month, he has done at least 20 interviews, which have all been reviewed by NBC News. Tasked with coordinating Trump’s core campaign promise of a mass deportation, Homan has used the appearances to begin detailing how the efforts might take shape and how the administration will move its plan forward. While they are far from painting a complete picture, the interviews have given more specifics than have been offered about the deportation policy in the past.

The New York Police Department is now looking into whether a denied insurance claim related to that injury played a role in the shooting, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told Fox News on Tuesday. Refusals to pay for care are more common for people with employer-based health insurance or private insurance compared to people with public insurance, such as Medicare and Medicaid. Another KFF report published last year found nearly 17% of in-network claims were denied in 2021 among people with Obamacare coverage. When patients get denied, Gaffney said, they may not think to appeal, leaving them with medical debt. “Our health care is not seen as a right.

The United Kingdom on Wednesday indefinitely banned new prescriptions of puberty blockers to treat minors for gender dysphoria. The announcement comes a week after the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case involving state bans on puberty-suppressing medication and other forms of transition-related care for minors. Puberty blockers are commonly prescribed to transgender children in countries throughout the Western world to delay the onset of puberty or pause it as it is transpiring. A temporary ban on new puberty-blocker prescriptions for British minors experiencing gender dysphoria was already put in place over the summer. The U.K. ban comes as the U.S. Supreme Court weighs the constitutionality of a Tennessee ban on gender-affirming care for minors.

The North Carolina state Board of Elections voted Wednesday to reject a Republican challenge to throw out 60,000 ballots in a state Supreme Court race that the Democratic incumbent leads by just over 700 votes. A second, partial hand recount of the race increased Riggs’ lead marginally, but that total is not considered official by North Carolina's elections board. Griffin or the North Carolina Republican Party could appeal the decision, which would insert the case into the state court system. Joining in the challenge to the North Carolina elections board board was the Republican candidate in a close state House race that will determine whether the GOP maintains its supermajority in the chamber. WASHINGTON — In legacy mode, outgoing President Joe Biden’s White House is warning the Republicans who are about to take power against repealing his biggest achievements. During his 2024 campaign, Trump said, “We will rescind all unspent funds under the misnamed Inflation Reduction Act.”Republicans won a 53-seat Senate majority and a slim House majority of 220-215 in the 2024 elections. Other Republicans say there are plenty of other places for the GOP to find cuts to finance their multi-trillion-dollar effort. Murphy said he also favors slashing Affordable Care Act subsidies under the Inflation Reduction Act, which the Biden administration has used to limit insurance premiums for many in the middle class. “I think a lot of it needs to go away.”Asked whether the slim margins could hinder House Republicans when it comes to passing the major party-line measures, Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., said it’s a familiar dynamic for them.

The 2034 World Cup was officially awarded to Saudi Arabia, FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced Wednesday following a virtual congress. The decision, however, comes with pushback from groups that criticize Saudi Arabia’s human rights record. A joint statement from 21 organizations — with signatories from international trade unions and global human rights organizations such as Amnesty International — called the move a “moment of great danger” for human rights. “FIFA’s reckless decision to award the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia without ensuring adequate human rights protections are in place will put many lives at risk,” the statement read. Hassan al-Thawadi, secretary general of Qatar’s World Cup organizing committee, told Piers Morgan in 2022 that “between 400 and 500” migrants died but he did not “have the exact number.”The United States, Mexico and Canada will host the upcoming World Cup in 2026.

WASHINGTON — A massive defense policy bill on track to clear the House on Wednesday includes a ban on gender-affirming care for children of servicemembers — a provision that sparked opposition from the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee. The sweeping must-pass bill — known as the National Defense Authorization Act or NDAA — was negotiated between senior House and Senate lawmakers. “[B]lanketly denying health care to people who need it — just because of a biased notion against transgender people — is wrong,” Smith said in a statement Tuesday. The NDAA, which authorizes appropriations for the Defense Department and sets defense policies, expires at the end of the year. However, House and Senate negotiators couldn't reach agreement on "sufficient pro-life protections," the speaker's office said.
