WASHINGTON — The Harris campaign has tapped Yohannes Abraham for a top role in the presidential transition team, according to a source familiar with the planning. Covington and Burling LLP, the law firm where former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder works, will help the transition team get set up. Abraham's appointment comes as the General Services Administration prepares to engage the Harris and Trump campaigns in the presidential transition process. Federal law related to presidential transitions stipulates Sept. 1 as the deadline for GSA to enter into formal agreements with presidential transition teams. Several former Trump administration staffers are part of the groups behind Project 2025, but McMahon and Lutnick haven’t been connected to the effort.

CNN —Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced at a news conference in Phoenix Friday that he is suspending his campaign and endorsing Trump. Kennedy insisted that he was not ending his campaign, but he noted that he will withdraw his name from appearing on ballots in swing states. If you live in a blue state, you can vote for me without harming — or helping — President Trump or Vice President Harris. Kennedy running mate Nicole Shanahan praised him following his announcement and urged him to “save our children” in a social media post. But Kennedy’s support for Trump was clear Friday afternoon.

Related storiesIn recent days, Kennedy's campaign has shown signs of strain. Kennedy seemed primed to be a factor in the 2024 election when it appeared that President Joe Biden and Trump were destined for a rematch. Early polls showed that Kennedy was nearing double-digit support when faced with a likely Trump-Biden rematch that Americans didn't want. But, like Trump, Kennedy has faltered over the summer.

The bodies returned for the final time to the villages that, in life, they had called home. Months of anguished waiting at an end, mourners embraced, wept, read tributes and lowered into the soil the remains of Israeli hostages recovered this week from the Gaza Strip. But grief had to share space with fury at Israel’s leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for not agreeing to a cease-fire with Hamas that might have saved the captives’ lives. “You were abandoned, again and again, by the prime minister and his ministers, to Hamas’s tunnels,” Keren Munder — herself a former hostage — said as she buried her father, Abraham Munder, on Wednesday in his hometown, Nir Oz. Distant explosions and crackles of gunfire occasionally interrupted her eulogy, reminders of the war between Israel and Hamas, now in its 11th month.

A ship in the Red Sea was targeted in a third attack suspected to have been carried out by Yemen’s Houthi rebels Tuesday in their campaign of assaults over the Israel-Hamas war, officials said. The Houthis have targeted more than 70 vessels with missiles and drones since the start of the war in Gaza in October. Other missiles and drones have been either intercepted by a U.S.-led coalition in the Red Sea or failed to reach their targets. After the strikes, the Houthis paused their attacks until Aug. 3, when they hit a Liberian-flagged container ship traveling through the Gulf of Aden. In just a few months, Trump may join the exclusive club of two-time presidential losers. Of course, it is still too early to make any real prediction about November. But the sharp reversal in Trump’s electoral fortunes raises an obvious question worth thinking about now: If Trump loses, and perhaps especially if he loses badly, what comes next for the Republican Party? One of the defining attributes of his leadership of the Republican Party is the extent to which he has so thoroughly reshaped Republican identity while leading Republican politicians to a string of national election defeats. Following Trump’s surprise win in 2016, Republicans either lost or underperformed in 2018, 2020 and 2022.

Mr. Austin has also directed the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, equipped with F-35 fighter jets, to speed to the region, joining the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and its accompanying warships already in the Gulf of Oman. A statement from the Israeli government said that Mr. Gallant had spoken to Mr. Austin about the Israeli military’s “readiness and capabilities in the face of threats posed by Iran and its regional proxies.”The Israeli defense minister also discussed “the urgency of achieving an agreement for the release of hostages and thanked the U.S. administration for its leadership and commitment to this issue,” the statement said. Hamas has not indicated whether its representatives will be at the meeting. The call between Mr. Austin and Mr. Gallant came a day after an Israeli airstrike hit a school compound in northern Gaza where displaced Palestinians were sheltering, an attack that Gazan authorities said killed dozens of people. Mr. Austin used the call to once again underscore the importance of “mitigating civilian harm” during Israeli operations in the enclave, General Ryder said.

The U.S. is sending more troops and military hardware to the Middle East as it seeks to increase the resources available to "defend Israel," the Pentagon said in a statement. It comes against the backdrop of Iran's leadership vowing retaliation against Israel after the killing of Hamas' former political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31.
