In the past year, clothing retailers have sought to clear excess stock that had piled up due to a shift in consumer demand to essentials from discretionary items like clothing. But with fourth-quarter temperatures expected to start off warm, according to weather tracking firm Weather Trends International, stores carrying winter styles and gear could find themselves loaded with inventory at the end of the season. European company Pepco Group (PCOP.WA) also noted that the landing of its autumn and winter clothing inventory had coincided with persistent record-warm weather in its core Central and Eastern European markets. In the United States, temperatures could rise by 2 to 12 degrees Fahrenheit on average in the October-December period compared with last year, according to Weather Trends International. Dr. Farah has theorized that Hemingway suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which in later years would be linked to the suicides of former N.F.L. players who suffered the brain disease because of repeated concussions and other injuries. In Philadelphia in February, a first edition of Hemingway’s “In Our Time” from 1924 was auctioned for $277,000. Another signed letter was auctioned off last month at Nate Sanders Auctions, but went for much less: $6,875 after only one bid. In the crash letter — which was written on April 17, 1954, but was misdated as 1953 — Hemingway recounted the crashes and their effect on him, and told his lawyer Alfred Rice that he needed money.

Back-to-school spending is expected to reach a record-high of $41.5 billion, according to the National Retail Federation's annual survey . The trends suggest certain retailers will fare better than others, with analysts favoring these stocks for back-to-school. According to a Stifel survey, retro basketball styles from Nike were the most popular choice for back-to-school this year. "These retailers have invested significantly in their private label assortments in recent years and continue to grow penetration," Jefferies analysts wrote in an Aug. 28 note. That could be a warning sign for the holidays as many investors look to back-to-school sales to set the tone for the winter season.
