The dollar steadied on Wednesday as stronger-than-expected U.S. retail sales had traders slightly trimming bets that the U.S. easing cycle will begin with an outsized interest rate cut. The Federal Reserve is expected to make its first interest rate cut in more than four years at 1800 GMT, which will be followed by a news conference half an hour later. A rate cut is fully priced, with interest rate futures implying a 63% chance of a 50 basis point cut, after flirting with 70% a day earlier. Traders say the Fed's tone as well as the size of the rate cut will drive the next moves in the foreign exchange market. China's stock, bond and currency markets resume trade on Wednesday after the mid-autumn festival break, though it is a holiday on Wednesday in Hong Kong.

CNN —Former Italy and Juventus striker Salvatore “Totò” Schillaci, who was the top scorer at the 1990 World Cup on home soil, has died at the age of 59, his former club announced in a statement on Wednesday. “Salvatore Schillaci, known by everyone as Totò, the striker from the magic nights of Italia ’90 with our national team. Bon voyage, champion.”Schillaci played a starring role for Italy at the 1990 World Cup. In the aftermath of the World Cup, Schillaci would go on to score only once more for his country, a goal in a 2-1 defeat to Norway the following year in a qualifier for the 1992 UEFA European Championships. Reuters —A trial of eight health workers charged with “homicide by negligence” over the death of Diego Maradona has been postponed from October until March, Argentine media reported on Thursday. A court in San Isidro, a town on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, granted the request of three of the eight defendants to postpone for a second time the trial, originally scheduled for June 4 and due to start on October 1. The process will now begin on March 11, the Argentine newspaper La Nación reported. The footballing great, who led Argentina to a second World Cup title in 1986, died aged 60 in November 2020 from heart failure after undergoing brain surgery days earlier. Among those charged in the death of the former Boca Juniors and Napoli player are his neurosurgeon, psychologist, psychiatrist and nurses, who could face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years.

CNN —A drug currently used to treat HIV has also been found to dramatically reduce the risk of infection, significantly more than the primary option available for pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP. In a Phase 3 clinical trial, 99.9% of participants who took a twice-a-year injection of lenacapavir for HIV prevention did not acquire an infection, according to data from drugmaker Gilead Sciences. There were only two cases among 2,180 patients – effectively reducing the risk of HIV infection by 96% and proving 89% more effective than Truvada, a pill taken once a day. It’s a “significant breakthrough in HIV prevention,” according to a news release from the World Health Organization in July. Gilead said it will use these trial data to start the drug approval process in multiple countries by the end of the year.

The Olympics adopted the same name to honor its culture and history and preserve its authenticity, Nifontov said. As breaking makes its Olympics debut, Cooper said a part of him fears it will lose some of the cultural qualities that make it a unique artform. Thousands of Venezuelans marched across the South American country on Saturday over its contested election, as President Nicolas Maduro told supporters some 2,000 people had been arrested during protests against the results. The published election result sparked widespread allegations of fraud and protests. Subsequently security forces cracked down on protests which Maduro’s government labeled part of an attempted U.S.-backed coup. “This time there will be no forgiveness,” Maduro told supporters at a rally in Caracas, where he said some 2,000 people had been detained in connection to “crimes” during the protests. During the week, some Venezuelans have appeared outside police stations seeking news of their detained family members.

Darja Stefancic, a painter in Slovenia known for technicolor landscapes, thought it strange when an obscure online art gallery run by a woman from Argentina contacted her out of the blue and asked her to join its thin roster of artists. The painter suspected a scam, and she worried that the gallery, which virtually nobody in Slovenia’s tiny, tight-knit art scene had heard of, “just wanted to cheat people.”It did — but in ways that far surpassed even her darkest suspicions. The online gallery was a front for Russian intelligence, part of an elaborate network of deep-cover sleeper spies trained to impersonate Argentines, Brazilians and other foreign nationals by Russia’s foreign intelligence agency, the SVR, around Europe. They were real-life versions of the fictional stars of “The Americans,” a television series inspired by the 2010 arrest of a ring of actual Russian sleeper agents in the United States.
