Here are some charts illustrating what has changed, and what has not, in meme stocks. Data from JPMorgan illustrate how quickly sentiment can turn among individual investors, who have been among the key drivers of moves in meme stocks. Retail investors sold a net $852 million in single stocks in the past week. The Roundhill MEME ETF (MEME.P), which tracks the performance of a basket of meme stocks, is down about 55% from where it started trading in December 2021, though up about 38% for the year. A quick rise, often followed by a rapid descent, is a fate common to meme stocks of both the past and present.

AMC Entertainment to effect 10:1 reverse split on Aug. 24

REUTERS/Mario AnzuoniAug 14 (Reuters) - AMC Entertainment Holdings (AMC.N) said on Monday its 10-to-1 reverse stock split will take place on Aug. 24 and its preferred shares "APE" will be converted to common stock on Aug. 25. The common shares of the theatre chain operator fell 38% to $3.25 in premarket trading, while its preferred shares rose 18% to $2.09. AMC aims to increase its Class A common stock to 550 million from about 524 million, it said in a regulatory filing. The company would make a settlement payment of one Class A common stock for every 7.5 Class A shares to the entitled shareholders after the reverse stock split. AMC was sued in February for allegedly rigging a shareholder vote that would allow it to convert preferred stock to common stock and issue hundreds of millions of new shares.

The common shares dropped to $3.45, levels just before the meme stock mania of January 2021 when retail traders hyped up the stock on online forums like Reddit. The preferred stock units called "APE" , which trade at a significant discount to common shares, jumped 15% to $2.05. Under the settlement, AMC will provide stock worth an estimated $129 million to common shareholders to settle potential legal claims related to a stock conversion plan. Aron said the company has raised $418 million in cash through the sale of "APE" units over the past 12 months.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File PhotoAug 10 (Reuters) - Robinhood Markets (HOOD.O) on Thursday defeated an appeal by investors over the stock trading platform's decision to restrict purchases of 13 "meme stocks" during a January 2021 frenzy that squeezed hedge funds. "When Robinhood restricted its customers' ability to buy meme stocks, it took a sizable - and perhaps justifiable - hit in the court of public opinion," Circuit Judge Britt Grant wrote. "But in this court, Robinhood is only accountable for specific legal duties." The meme stock frenzy has been fueled in part by investors using online forums such as Twitter and the subreddit WallStreet Bets. Robinhood is also being sued by investors who sold nine meme stocks at a loss in late January and early February 2021.

Lately, it seems that retail traders have been focused on Tupperware. The share price of the iconic food container brand has seen a meteoric rise over the past two weeks. That's up nearly 480% from when its stock price hit a 52-week low of $0.61 per share on July 20. Tupperware's rapid rise is being fueled by retail traders who are buying up the stock and driving the price higher, according to Barron's. Other well-known companies have experienced similar boosts in the past, thanks to retail traders too.

Cineworld emerges from Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Aug 1 (Reuters) - Cineworld Group (CINE.L) said it has emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy after nearly 11 months, coming out with lower debt and a new slate of management and board. The world's second largest cinema chain operator behind AMC Entertainment (AMC.N) said it has appointed former Chair and CEO of Warner Bros Ann Sarnoff to its board, along with four other members to join new Chairman Eric Foss and CEO Eduardo Acuna. The movie chain operator and owner of brands such as Regal, Cinema City, Picturehouse and Planet had filed for U.S. bankruptcy in early September to restructure its massive debt. The "New Cineworld" has fixed its balance sheet after cutting debt by $4.53 billion, raising about $800 million in new equity capital and securing new debt financing of about $1.71 billion, the company said. NEW YORK, July 28 (Reuters) - Shares of AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (AMC.N) have been hit by a wave of bearish options bets amid uncertainty over the company's stock conversion plan. While the common shares finished Thursday at $4.52, the APE preferred shares ended the session at $1.86. The move sent AMC’s shares higher, disappointing bearish traders who expected news of a conversion to tank the price. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File PhotoJuly 24 (Reuters) - Meme stocks have surged in the last few weeks as retail investors shun pricier stocks for cheaper speculative names, but some experts worry that this could choke the current rally in broader markets. At a time when the wider rally has made some stocks, especially in the tech space, too expensive, the return of meme stocks is offering retail investors a more affordable option to participate in 2023's market rebound and pocket big returns. Roundhill's Meme index (.MEME) hit a one-year high last week and was last up 60% for 2023 so far, dwarfing gains of more than 18% recorded by the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX). Retail investors poured in $1.27 billion per day on average into U.S. equities in July, closing in on the all-time record of $1.5 billion a day in March, Vanda Research said. The meme index consists of 25 equal-weighted U.S.-listed stocks with a combination of elevated social media activity and high short interest.

July 24 (Reuters) - Shares of retail traders' favorite AMC Entertainment Holdings (AMC.N) soared on Monday after a U.S. court blocked the theater chain's stock conversion plan that risked diluting investors' holdings. AMC had told investors it was burning cash at an unsustainable rate and warned that an inability to raise capital could force it into bankruptcy. The company has filed a revised petition for the stock conversion plan addressing the Delaware court's concerns, CEO Adam Aron said on Sunday. The highly shorted AMC common shares were the most traded U.S. stocks at 9:41 a.m. "Trying to short AMC during a short squeeze is about as smart as burning money," said Matthew Tuttle, chief executive offier at Tuttle Capital Management, adding that there is "not much juice left in the squeeze."

AMC can build Dreamhouse on Barbenheimer buzz

AMC Entertainment (AMC.N), the struggling movie theater chain wrestling with a meme-stock hangover, saw its busiest day since 2019 this past Saturday. The company needs cash to survive, and this weekend might add enough fantasy to help it. AMC has refiled to try again, and in some ways, Barbenheimer helps. The biggest risk to the movie theater business was that it would never return to pre-pandemic levels. AMC Entertainment, one of the U.S.’s largest theater chains, recorded over 7 million moviegoers in attendance over that weekend.
