Ivory Coast Seizes 100 Tons of Cocoa at the Border With Guinea

That compares with 1,000 CFA francs a kilogram in Ivory Coast, where the price is fixed and guaranteed throughout the year. Global cocoa prices have hit record highs in recent months amid worries about a bean deficit this season and with concerns growing for the next. Ivory Coast and neighbouring Ghana, the world's second biggest producer, have said smuggling hampers their effort to meet their yearly production target. "This year, despite the high price in both countries compared to Ivory Coast, there is less leakage... People are really finding it hard to get cocoa out of Ivory Coast," said Abel Gbale, a cocoa buyer in Danane, the country's last major town before the borders with Liberia and Guinea. Amadou Konate, a cocoa buyer based in Man, the main city in western Ivory Coast, said cocoa producers earn nothing from smuggling and the middlemen pocket all the money.

Suddenly, residents, including Camille and Diego, found themselves seeking a safe place for themselves and their loved ones. Ecuadorean Police/Handout via ReutersHours after terror broke out in Guayaquil, President Daniel Noboa took an unprecedented step. Noboa, who had only been inaugurated two months earlier, declared an “internal armed conflict” in the country and ordered Ecuador’s armed forces to “neutralize” the members of more than 20 gangs, which he labeled as terror groups. Since then, Ecuador’s national police and armed forces have been carrying out raids of homes of those with suspected ties to terror groups. Experts warn that Ecuador’s terror groups are aligned with a wider criminal network, including the notorious Sinaloa Cartel out of Mexico, complicating Noboa’s attempts to “neutralize” criminal groups operating within his borders.

NEW YORK (AP) — Christopher Nolan was still sleeping when his film, “Oppenheimer," landed a leading 13 Academy Awards nominations Tuesday. “Oppenheimer,” Nolan's sprawling American saga of J. Walter Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb, has more or less been the Oscar frontrunner since it made its acclaimed debut in late July. It came one nomination shy of tying the record for best Oscar nominations ever. “It's flabbergasting," said Thomas who spoke with her husband in an interview a few hours after nominations were announced. And so I think that’s something that really touched audiences.

The Justice Department is planning this week to release findings of an investigation into the 2022 school shooting in which 21 people were killed. Poor coordination, training and execution of active-shooter protocol contributed to a law enforcement response that can only be described as a "failure," the report said. The 600-page findings describe a chaotic scene that should have triggered a number of coordinated responses by law enforcement officers who first arrived at the school. Steven C. CNN —An Ecuadorean prosecutor, who was reportedly leading an investigation into an attack on a local TV network, was assassinated on Wednesday in Guayaquil, according to Ecuador’s Attorney General Diana Salazar. Cesar Suarez was killed in the northern part of the city, known for being one of the most violent cities in the country. The TV station attack led Noboa to declare an “internal armed conflict” in the country, ordering security forces to “neutralize” several criminal groups accused of spreading extreme violence in the Latin American nation. Since then, Ecuadorian military and police have spread throughout the city of Guayaquil, a CNN team on the ground witnessed. This comes as rival criminal organizations fuel Ecuador’s worsening security situation in their battle to control drug trafficking routes.

Jimmy Haslam, CEO of Pilot Flying J. and Warren Buffett, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. The Haslam family on Tuesday said its Pilot Corporation had closed the sale of its remaining 20% ownership interest in truck-stop giant Pilot Travel Centers to Berkshire Hathaway . That settlement avoided what was scheduled to be a two-day trial beginning Jan. 8, with testimony from Berkshire Hathaway executive Greg Abel, the designated successor to company CEO Warren Buffett. CNBC has requested comment from Berkshire Hathaway, which in a regulatory filing last year listed the Haslams' noncontrolling interest in Pilot Travel Centers at a value of around $3.2 billion. PTC is the largest operator of travel centers in North America, with more than 750 locations under the Pilot and Flying J brands.

Berkshire Hathaway settled a billion-dollar lawsuit with the Haslam family over how Berkshire accounted for the value of Pilot Travel Centers, which would affect the price paid in a forced buyout of the family's remaining stake in that truck-stop giant, both sides said Sunday night. The Haslam family and its Pilot Corp. in the suit filed this fall alleged that Berkshire Hathaway improperly adopted a form of accounting of the value of Pilot Travel Centers that would have led to a sharply lower price Berkshire would pay to acquire the family's remaining 20% stake in PTC. Berkshire in turn had accused Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam of offering payments to PTC executives to boost the value of the company so that his family would get a bigger buyout from Berkshire, which controls PTC. The Haslam family and Pilot Corp. strongly denied those claims. Berkshire and Pilot Corp. in similar press statements Sunday night said that they had reached an agreement to fully settle the Delaware Chancery case.

CNN —A 44-year-old American visiting the Bahamas from Boston was killed in a shark attack while paddleboarding near a beach resort Monday, according to local authorities. The incident comes days after a woman was killed in an apparent shark attack at a Mexican resort. Shark attacks, particularly fatal ones, are rare: On average, sharks kill five people per year in unprovoked attacks, CNN previously reported. The odds of getting fatally attacked by one of the carnivorous fish are less than 1 in 4 million, according to the International Shark Attack File. And in 2019, an American woman was also killed while snorkeling in the Bahamas after three different sharks attacked her.
